On the basis of the Computational Fluid Dynamics technique (CFD) combined with the overlap grid method, this paper establishes a numerical simulation method to study the problem of ice-propeller interaction in viscous flow and carries out a simulation forecast of the hydrodynamic performance of an ice-class propeller and flow characteristics when in the proximity of milling-shape ice (i.e., an ice block with a groove cut by a high-speed revolving propeller). We use a trimmed mesh in the entire calculation domain and use the overlap grid method to transfer information between the domains of propeller rotation calculation and ice-surface computing. The grid is refined in the narrow gap between the ice and propeller to ensure the accuracy of the flow field. Comparison with the results of the experiment reveals that the error of the hydrodynamic performance is within 5%. This confirms the feasibility of the calculation method. In this paper, we calculate the exciting force of the propeller, analyze the time domain of the exciting force, and obtain the curve of the frequency domain using a Fourier transform of the time-domain curve of the exciting force. The existence of milling-shape ice before the propeller can greatly disturb the wake flow field. Unlike in open water, the propeller bearing capacity shows a downward trend in three stages, and fluctuating pressure is more disordered near the ice.

Non-synoptic winds generated by tornadoes, downbursts or gust fronts exhibit significant non-stationarity and can cause significant wind load effect on flexible structures such as long-span bridges. However, conventional assumptions on stationarity used to evaluate the structural wind-induced vibration are inadequate. In this paper, an efficient frequency domain scheme based on fast CQC method, which can predict non-stationary buffeting random responses of long-span bridges, is presented, and then this approach is applied to evaluate the buffeting response of a long-span suspension bridge located in a complex mountainous wind environment as an example. In this study, the data-driven method based on one available measured wind speed sample is firstly presented to establish non-stationary wind models, including time-varying mean wind speed, time-varying intensity envelope function and uniformly modulated fluctuating spectrum. Then, a linear time-variant (LTV) system based on the proposed scheme can be generally applied to calculate the non-stationary buffeting responses. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed scheme are verified through Monte Carlo time domain simulation implemented in ANSYS platform. Also, the transient effect nature of the bridge responses is further illustrated by comparison of the non-stationary, quasistationary and steady-state cases. Finally, buffeting response analysis with traditional stationary treatment (10 min constant mean plus stationary wind fluctuation) is performed to illustrate the importance of the non-stationary characteristics embedded in original wind speed samples.
Double-Skin Facades (DSF) on tall buildings are becoming increasingly common in urban environments due to their ability to provide architectural merit, passive design, acoustic control and even improved structural efficiency. This study aims to understand the effects of porous DSF on the aerodynamic characteristics of tall buildings using wind tunnel tests. High Frequency Force Balance and pressure tests were performed on the CAARC standard tall building model with a variable porous DSF on the windward face. The introduction of a porous DSF did not adversely affect the overall mean forces and moments experienced by the building, with few differences compared to the standard tall building model. There was also minimal variation between the results for the three porosities tested: 50%, 65% and 80%. The presence of a full-height porous DSF was shown to effectively reduce the mean and fluctuating wind pressure on the side face of the building by about 10%, and a porous DSF over the lower half height of the building was almost as effective. This indicates that the porous DSF could be used to reduce the design load on cladding and fixtures on the side faces of tall buildings, where most damage to facades typically occurs.
In order to effectively simulate nonstationary stochastic turbulent wind fields, four separation hybrid (SEP-H) models are proposed in the present study. Based on the assumption that the lateral turbulence component at one single-point is uncorrelated with the longitudinal and vertical turbulence components, the fluctuating wind is separated into 2nV-1D and nV1D nonstationary stochastic vector processes. The first process can be expressed as double proper orthogonal decomposition (DPOD) or proper orthogonal decomposition and spectral representation method (POD-SRM), and the second process can be expressed as POD or SRM. On this basis, four SEP-H models of nonstationary stochastic turbulent wind fields are developed. In addition, the orthogonal random variables in the SEP-H models are presented as random orthogonal functions of elementary random variables. Meanwhile, the number theoretical method (NTM) is conveniently adopted to select representative points set of the elementary random variables. The POD-FFT (Fast Fourier transform) technique is introduced in frequency to give full play to the computational efficiency of the SEP-H models. Finally, taking a long-span bridge as the engineering background, the SEP-H models are compared with the dimension-reduction DPOD (DR-DPOD) model to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed models.

The aerodynamic characteristics of a circular cylinder with a wavy splitter plate were experimentally studied, specifically the potential reduction of drag and fluctuations in drag. To study the individual effects of amplitude and wavelength, the experiments were conducted by varying one parameter at a time while holding the other one constant. To study the effect of amplitude (A), the wavelength to diameter ratio (λ/D) was fixed at 0.115 and the amplitude to diameter ratio (A/D) was varied as 0.005, 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020. Similarly, to study the effect of wavelength, A/D was fixed as 0.020 and λ/D was varied as 0.46, 0.23, 0.15 and 0.12. Analysis of the data indicated that the wavy splitter plate caused a significant reduction in both the magnitude and the fluctuation of drag. The variation of aerodynamic forces and the fluctuations with them corresponding to different Reynolds numbers were computed and the spectral aspects of fluctuating forces due to vortex shedding is analysed and effective reduction in both shedding frequency and magnitude was observed.
Background: The perceptual assessment is generally performed by the voice specialist. The objective evaluation is performed in a voice laboratory. Research in voice laboratories has generated a variety of different objective tests and parameters. The perceptual evaluation is one of the most controversial topics in voice research. Review of literature reveals a wide variety of rating scales and reliability data fluctuating from study to study. Unfortunately, there is no widely accepted valid method for classifying voice disorders and assessing outcome after voice treatment. Objectives: The goals of this research were to identify important objective acoustic parameters of vocal quality, and to establish an objective and quantitative correlate of the perceived vocal quality. Materials and Methods : We evaluated the voice analyzed data from 122 dysphonic patients and 20 normal volunteers. A computerized speech lab. 4300B(CSL) was used to carry out the analysis of each voice sample. Results: Three dysphonia severity indices(DSI) were created using discriminant analysis. DSI is based on the weighted combination of the following selected set of acoustic parameters: absolute jitter(Jita in us), smoothed pitch period perturbation (sPPQ in %), amplitude perturbation quotient(APQ in %), soft phonation index(SPI), average fundamental frequency(Fo in Hz), lowest fundamental frequency(Flo in Hz), and smoothed amplitude perturbation quotient(sAPQ in %). The DSI, being the discriminating rule calculated by the logistic regression, consists of three equation based on statistically significant acoustic parameters. Three DSI were created to reflects best the degree of hoarseness as expressed by G from the GRBAS scale. The more positive this DSI is for a patient, the worse the vocal quality. The more it is negative, the better it is. The effect of sex is included implicitly in the DSI-1 and DSI-2, so that a separate DSI-1 and DSI-2 for males and females need not be used. The DSI is objective because no perceptual input is required for its calculation. Conculsion : This research demonstrates that the voice function values calculated from three different multivariate objective dysphonia severity indices are significantly associated with subjective voice assessments. These multivariate objective dysphonia severity indices may be appropriate for use in clinical trials and outcomes research on treatment effectiveness for voice disorders.

A pressure relief valve is generally used to prevent piping systems from being broken due to high pressure gas flows. However, the sudden pressure drop caused by the pressure relief valve produces high acoustic energy which propagates in the form of compressible acoustic waves in the pipe and sometimes causes severe vibration of the pipe structure, thereby resulting in its failure. In this study, internal aerodynamic noise due to valve flow is estimated for a simple contraction-expansion pipe by combining the LES (Large-Eddy Simulation) technique with the wavenumber-frequency analysis, which allows the decomposition of fluctuating pressure into incompressible hydrodynamic pressure and compressible acoustic pressure. In order to increase the convergence, the steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved. And then, for the unsteady flow analysis with high accuracy, the unsteady LES is performed with the steady result as the initial value. The wavenumber-frequency analysis is finally performed using the unsteady flow simulation results. The wavenumber-frequency analysis is shown to separate the compressible pressure fluctuation in the flow field from the incompressible one. This result can provide the accurate information for the source causing so-called acoustic-induced-vibration of a piping system.

The flow-induced vibration in a heat exchanger may cause the damage to piping. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the flow induced vibration characteristics for the structural stability of a heat exchanger. The purpose of this study was to compare the generation, development, and separation characteristics of a vortex around a circular tube with respect to time when the flow velocity of the inlet was fluctuating constantly and periodically. The time characteristics of lift and drag and the PSD characteristics were also investigated. In the case of a constant inlet flow velocity, the well-known Kalman vorticity distribution was shown. The vortex generation, growth, and separation were also observed alternately at the upper and lower sides of the tube. In the case of periodic inlet flow velocity, the vortex occurred simultaneously in the upper and lower sides of the tube. In the case of constant inlet flow velocity, the magnitude of the lift PSD was 500 times larger than that of drag. The frequency was 31.15 Hz and that of drag was doubled at 62.3 Hz. In case of a periodic inlet flow velocity, the PSD of the drag was approximately 500 times larger than that of lift. The frequency was 15.57 Hz, which was the same as the inlet-flow velocity frequency. In addition, the frequency of lift was 31.15 Hz, which was the same Karman vortex frequency.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of most developing countries. In these countries, agriculture or farming is mostly done manually with little integration of machinery, intelligent systems and data monitoring. Irrigation is an essential process that directly influences crop production. The fluctuating amount of rainfall per year has led to the adoption of irrigation systems in most farms. The absence of smart sensors, monitoring methods and control, has led to low harvests and draining water sources. In this research paper, we introduce a 433 MHz Radio Frequency and 2G based Smart Irrigation Meter System and a water prepayment system for rural areas of Tanzania with no reliable internet coverage. Specifically, Ngurudoto area in Arusha region where it will be used as a case study for data collection. The proposed system is hybrid, comprising of both weather data (evapotranspiration) and soil moisture data. The architecture of the system has on-site weather measurement controllers, soil moisture sensors buried on the ground, water flow sensors, a solenoid valve, and a prepayment system. To achieve high precision in linear and nonlinear regression and to improve classification and prediction, this work cascades a Dynamic Regression Algorithm and Naïve Bayes algorithm.
A method is presented which enables the computation of the bed-load transport rate as the product of particle velocity and bed-load Concentration. In this study, it is assumed that particle velocity is proportinal to the flow velocity near the particle and the apperance frequency of the component of the fluctuating velocity of turbulent flow close to bed is normally distributed, and the particle velocity is expressed by mean flow velocity near the particle and the function of bed shear stress. Engelund formula, which is checked indirectly to be proper to use in this study, is employed to estimate the effective shear velocity. And the dffective bed shear stress acting on particle is obtained by that shear velocity. Ashida-Michiue's formula is used to get the concentration of bed-load. Experimental data for bed-load is compared with the results of other studies and the transport fornula suggested in this paper gives results which are in good accordance with other's experimental data excepting the results obtained the case of comparatively small bed shear stress.
