For most full-scale tall buildings the Reynolds number of a flow field around a circular cylinder under strong wind is usually greater than $2{\times}10^7$, which is difficult to achieve in most wind tunnel tests. To explore the wind characteristics of tall cylindrical buildings with equidirectional grooves from subcritical to transcritical flow ($6.6{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}3.3{\times}10^5$ and $9.9{\times}10^6{\leq}Re{\leq}7.2{\times}10^7$), wind tunnel tests and full-scale large eddy simulations were carried out. The results showed that the rectangular-grooves narrow the wake width due to the downstream movement of the separation point and the deeper grooves cause smaller mean and fluctuating pressure while the peak pressure is little affected. Furthermore, the grooves lead to lower frequency of vortex shedding but the Strouhal number remains at the range from 0.15 to 0.35. The drag coefficient of the cylinders with grooves was found to be 2~3 times as large as that of smooth cylinders.

The structural vibrations of a flat plate induced by fluctuating wall pressures within wall-bounded transonic jet flow downstream of a high-aspect ratio rectangular nozzle are simulated. The wall pressures are calculated using Hybrid RANS/LES CFD, where LES models the large-scale turbulence in the shear layers downstream of the nozzle. The structural vibrations are computed using modes from a finite element model and a time-domain forced response calculation methodology. At low flow speeds, the convecting turbulence in the shear layers loads the plate in a manner similar to that of turbulent boundary layer flow. However, at high nozzle pressure ratio discharge conditions the flow over the panel becomes transonic, and the shear layer turbulence scatters from shock cells just downstream of the nozzle, generating backward traveling low frequency surface pressure loads that also drive the plate. The structural mode shapes and subsonic and transonic surface pressure fields are transformed to wavenumber space to better understand the nature of the loading distributions and individual modal responses. Modes with wavenumber distributions which align well with those of the pressure field respond strongly. Negative wavenumber loading components are clearly visible in the transforms of the supersonic flow wall pressures near the nozzle, indicating backward propagating pressure fields. In those cases the modal joint acceptances include significant contributions from negative wavenumber terms.
Compared to metal-to-metal tribology, polymer tribology presents further complexity as it is more prone to be influenced by operating conditions. Over the past two decades, progress in the field of wear of polymers has led to the establishment of more refined wear mechanisms. The current paper establishes the link between different load parameters and the wear rate of polymers, based on experimental investigations. A pin-on-plate reciprocating tribometer was used to examine the wear behaviour of polyamide sliding against a steel counterface, under constant and fluctuating loads, in dry conditions. In addition, the influence of controlled imperfections in the polymer surface upon its wear rate were examined, under cyclic and steady loading, in order to better understand surface fatigue wear of polymers. The imposed imperfections consisted of vertical artificial deep crack (slit) perpendicular or parallel to the direction of sliding. The study concludes with the followings findings; in general, wear of polymers shows a significant tendency to the type of applied load. Under cyclic loads, polymers show an increase in wear rate compared to those tested under static loads. Such increase was found to increase with the increase in cyclic load frequency. It is also demonstrated that surface cracks results in higher wear rates, particularly under cyclic loads.
A 12-year-old, female Maltese was referred with uncontrolled hyperadrenocorticism (HAC). Despite well management of HAC through treatment with trilostane and serial monitoring with ACTH stimulation tests for over three years, stiffness of the neck and limbs progressively worsened over time. Neurological test was performed, which showed no abnormalities of cranial nerves. Proprioception was delayed but the cause appeared to be due to stiffness of limb muscles. Muscle tone had increased over time and stiffness had worsened to the extent where it made walking difficult. MRI scans showed no orthopedic or spinal diseases, and pituitary microadenoma was confirmed with pituitary gland measurement of 6 × 6.4 × 4.5 mm (H × W × L). Electromyography presented random discharges with fluctuating amplitude and frequency, which were consistent with myotonic discharges. There were no improvements of myotonic signs despite treatment for HAC with trilostane. Supplementation of L-carnitine and coenzyme Q-10 to mitigate muscle stiffness, following diazepam and methocarbamol to help with muscle rigidity, failed to show any positive effect and the dog died a sudden death, 1,182 days after the initial visit.

This paper presents a systematic procedure for three-dimensional noise analysis of an axial-flow fan by using computational aero-acoustics based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. Flow-fields of a basic fan model are simulated by solving three-dimensional, unsteady, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the commercial code ANSYS CFX 11.0. Starting with steady flow results, unsteady flow analysis is performed to extract the fluctuating pressures in the time domain at specified local points on the blade surface of the axial flow fan. The perturbed density wave by rotating blades reaches at the observer position, which is simulated by an in-house noise prediction software based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. The detailed far-field noise signatures from the axial-flow fan are analyzed in terms of source types, field characteristics, and interpolation schemes.
This study proposes a new control approach for efficient vibration suppression of two identical adjacent structures. The conventional control approach of two adjacent structures is to interconnect the two structures with passive, semi-active or active control devices. However, when the two adjacent structures are identical to each other, their dynamical behaviors such as frequency and damping properties are also the same. In this case, the interconnected control devices cannot exhibit the dissipative control forces on the both structures as expected since the relative displacements and velocities of the devices become close to zero. In other words, the interconnection method does not work for the twin structures as enough as expected. In order to solve this problem, we propose several new control approaches to effectively and efficiently reduce the identically-fluctuating responses of the adjacent structures with minimum control efforts. In order to demonstrate the proposed control systems, the proposed several control systems are optimally designed and their control performances are compared with that of the conventional optimal control system where each TMD(tuned mass damper) is installed in each structure for independent control purpose. The simulated results show that one of the proposed control systems(System 04) is able to guarantee enhanced control performance compared with the conventional system.

Vortex-induced vibration and instability vibration of tall buildings are very important fluid-structure interaction phenomenon, and many fundamental questions concerning the influence of body movement on the unsteady aerodynamic force remain unanswered. For tall buildings, there are two experimental methods to investigate the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces, one is forced vibration method and the other is free vibration method. In the present paper, a free vibration method was used to investigate the unsteady aerodynamic force on tall building whose aspect ratio is 9 under boundary layer simulating city area. Wind pressures on surfaces and tip displacements were measured simultaneously, and the characteristics of tip displacements and generalized forces were discussed. It was found that variation of across-wind displacements showed different trend between the case when wind speed increases and wind speed decreases, and the fluctuating generalize forces in across-wind direction of vibrating model are larger than that of static model near the resonant wind speed and approach to the static value. And for higher wind speed range, there were two peaks in across-wind power spectra of generalize forces of vibrating model, which means that two frequency components are predominant in unsteady aerodynamic forces.
The anisotropic nature of the magnetic turbulence associated with magnetic dipolarizations in the Earth's plasma sheet is examined. Specifically we determine the power spectral indices for the perpendicular and parallel components of the fluctuating magnetic field with respect to the background magnetic field and compare them to determine possible anisotropic features. For this study, we identify a total of 47 dipolarization events from February 2008 using the magnetic field observations by the THEMIS A, D and E satellites when they are situated closely near the neutral sheet in the near-Earth tail. For the identified events, we estimate the spectral indices for the frequency range from 1.3 mHz to 42 mHz. The results show that for many events the spectral indices are larger for fluctuations in the ${\Psi}$ direction than for those in the other two directions, where the ${\Psi}$ direction is perpendicular to the background magnetic field line and to the azimuthal direction. This implies that the dipolarization-associated turbulence of the magnetic field is often anisotropic. We discuss how this result differs from what is expected from the theory of homogeneous, anisotropic, MHD turbulence.
Using the concept of quasi-static decomposition and using three-noded isoparametric locking-free element, this article presents a formulation of the finite element method for Timoshenko beam subjected to spatially different time-dependent motions at supports. To verify the validity of the formulation, three fixed-hinged beams excited by the real seismic motions are examined; one is a slender beam, another is a stocky one, and the other is an intermediate one. The numerical results of time histories of motions of the three beams are compared with corresponding analytical solutions. The internal loads such as bending moment and shearing force at a specific time are also compared with analytic solutions. These comparisons show good agreements. The comparisons between static components of the internal loads and the corresponding total internal loads show that the static components predominate in the stocky beam, whereas the dynamic components predominate in the slender one. Thus, the total internal loads of the stocky beam, which is governed by static components, can be predicted simply by static analysis. Careful numerical experiments indicate that the fundamental frequency of a beam can be used as a parameter identifying such a stocky beam.
For the study of relaxation processes in complex spin system, a general master equation, which can be used to simulate a vast range of pulse experiments, has been formulated using the Liouville representation of quantum mechanics. The state of a nonequilibrium spin system in magnetic field is described by a density vector in Liouville space and the time evolution of the system is followed by the application of a linear master operator to the density vector in this Liouville space. In this master equation the nuclear spin relaxation due to intramolecular dipolar interaction or randomly fluctuating field interaction is explicitly implemented as a relaxation supermatrix for a strong coupled two-spin (1/2) system. The whole dynamic information inherent in the spin system is thus contained in the density vector and the master operator. The radiofrequency pulses are applied in the same space by corresponding unitary rotational supertransformations of the density vector. If the resulting FID is analytically Fourier transformed, it is possible to represent the final nonstationary spectrum using a frequency dependent spectral vector and intensity determining shape vector. The overall algorithm including relaxation interactions is then translated into an ANSIFORTRAN computer program, which can simulate a variety of two dimensional spectra. Furthermore a new strategy is tested by simulation of multiple quantum signals to differentiate the two relaxation interaction types.
