Recent Advances in Cold-Start and Drive Capability of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

  • The sub-zero cold is a major environmental consideration for the operational readiness of FCEVs because fuel cells produce water and utilize wet air with varying water content to generate electricity. Typical fuel cells thus have a fatal flaw in freezing conditions at startup. This drawback becomes more serious with the outsourced fuel cell that is entirely water-based for its internal humidification. In this background, the HMC's self-designed fuel cell was developed as an alternative and was employed in the Tucson-based FCEV in 2006 demonstrating its good cold-startup characteristics. The cold-startup capacity of the vehicle was validated through tests in the cold chamber and on the road, resulting in 50% stack power achieved in 250 seconds at $-15^{\circ}C$.

Experimental Study on the Freezing Conditions in a Ice-making Tube Using Flowing Subcooled Water (유동과 냉각수 이용 제빙관의 동결조건에 5관한 실험적 연구)

  • 본 연구에서는 유동과 냉각수를 이용하는 아이슬러리 제조관정을 관찰하고, 이 시스템의 가장 큰 문제점인 관내동결 특성을 파악하였다. 시험수로는 수도수(city water)를 이용하였다. 시스템을 순환하는 시험수가 제빙관내에서 $0^{\circ}C$ 이하의 과냉각 조건이 형성되어 제빙관을 빠져 나오면서 축냉조에 설치된 충격판상에서 과냉각 해소가 일어났다. 이때 유동과냉각수는 내부에너지를 방출하면서 그 일부가 얼음 입자로 상변화되었고, 나머지는 실험장치를 계속순환하였다. 제빙관에서 시험수와 브라인의 열교환 방식을 대향류와 평행류 두 조건에서 시험수의 과냉각도는 Reynolds 수가 증가함에 따라 감소하는 경향을 보였고, 이들 결과 값으로부터 각각의 관계식을 유도하였다. 또한 브라인의 냉각속도가 0.29~0.53[$^{\circ}C$/min] 범위에서 시험수의 과냉각도는 브라인 냉각속도에 종속되지 않았다.

  • As recent buildings often use low-quality concrete materials, are constructed defectively, and are put in extreme environmental conditions, many of them show the shortening of life resulting from the corrosion of reinforcing rods by salt damage, carbonization, freezing and thawing, cracking. This in turn raises the cost of repair and maintenance, so it is required to extend the life of structures through enhancing the durability of concrete. In response to the demand, researches on high-durability concrete are being made actively focused on the maximum water-cement ratio, the maximum unit quantity, the minimum cover thickness, the addition of mineral admixtures, etc. With this background, the present study examined the basic physical properties of concrete containing admixtures for enhancing the durability of concrete.

  • The lack of persistent excitation (PE) can be the reason of freezing in the recursive least square estimators and the covariance windup in the exponential weighted least square estimators. We present a theoretical analysis of these phenomena and a simple method to check the exciting condition in real time. Using these results and under some conditions such as slowly time varying Plant and a tracking problem for set point, a robust self-tuning regulators without PE is proposed. In this algorithm, when PE is not satisfied, only plant gain is estimated, and then the system parameters are corrected by it. It is shown that the gain adaptive scheme makes the robustness to be improved against modeling error, off-set, and correlated noise etc, by the results of analysis and simulations.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve heat transfer by attaching rectangular fins to tube. Experiments were carried out under the following conditions - Aspect ratio$(W_f/R_f)$ is 0.7, 1.2 and 1.8. Temperature conversion between high and low positions of water in the thermal storage appeared because maximum density point of water is about $4^{\circ}C$ and inlet direction of working fluid influenced conductive heat transfer Compared with the unfinned tube(bare tube), the rectangular tube increased the ice thermal storage energy and the ice thermal storage energy was increased as aspect ratio was increased.

  • Dehumidification systems have been developed for the various applications, especially for the production of dry compressed air. Compressed air producing system attach $\varepsilon$ d with dehumidification unit have advantages such as high reliability, low error ratio, comfortable working conditions, etc. Conventional dehumidification systems have several economical drawbacks like high electric cost, high cost of adsorbent and it is not environmentally friendly system because freezing agent like a Freon has been used. Membrane dryer is emerging system which have economical advantages and environmental merits.

  • This paper deals with the design, construction and operation of a direct solar hot water heating system developed to harness the solar energy more effectively. The system introduced here uses a unique network of riser tubes and header pipes apart from the existing concept to exploit the physical properties of water which expands when it freezes. It also employs a special pressure relief mechanism for the header to prevent its breakage due to freezing. A number of tests are made to assure its functional reliability during frigid weather conditions and its superior performance over indirect systems.

  • This paper reports the experimental results concerning the thermal performance of a freeze-protected direct solar water heating system. The direct system tested has been manufactured to prevent any breakage during harsh wintry conditions by specially designed riser and downcomer headers capable of relieving extra pressure due to freezing of water. The direct system tested has shown 10% improvement in its efficiency over that of a indirect type system using antifreeze as the heat transfer medium. It is felt that any direct system of its kind could galvanize the whole solar industry if further improvements are made to ensure its durability.

  • Pulsatile swelling behaviors and their application to drug delivery system were studied by using interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) hydrogels constructed with poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid). The PVA/PAAc IPNs hydrogels were symthesized by UV irradiation tallowed by repetitive freezing and thawing method. These hydrogels showed pH and temperature sensitive swelling behaviors. From the release experiment, the release amount of model drug incorporated into these hydrogels showed pulsatile patterns. Permeability coefficients obtained by various solutes differed in response to changes of permeation conditions.

An experimental study on occurrence of intermediate peaks in ice load signals

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the occurrence of intermediate peak and time duration, and to conduct a review for the causes of the intermediate peak. In this test, ice impact tests were conducted using a bow side shell frame and ice specimen. A total of 70 samples were manufactured. Two types of ice specimen with relatively different surface conditions were used. The criterion for dividing the two types of ice specimen was the different exposure times to room temperature after freezing. This experiment was conducted for each parameter in order to reproduce the actual icebreaking situation. As a result of the analysis, the intermediate peak in the ice load signal have been found to be caused by mechanisms by which the inner surface of broken ice contact with hull immediately after the initial hitting point of ice has been broken.
