Aging is the progressive accumulation of changes with time associated with responsible for the ever-increasing susceptibility to disease and death which accompanies advancing age. Lipid peroxides easily produced in the membrane system by the chain reaction of free radicals which occurred from various environmental factors. The amount of lipid peroxides produced in biological system increased with aging process, and lipid peroxidation damages involved in aging process and pathological disorders. Although lipid peroxides have such deleterious effects on the organisms, there are numerous substances and mechanisms which prevent the reaction of peroxide formation and protect the subject from its toxicity. This review provides an overview of how does lipid peroxidation of unsaturated lipids take place by free radical, and what is the intervention of lipid peroxides in pathogenesis of some human diseases, and also how does food restriction influences the aging process and various pathological disorders. The major focus of this paper is to review the evidence indicating that food restriction retards the aging process, and possible mechanisms of its actions. Therefore, it discussed the effects of age and food restriction on life-span, membrane yield, lipid peroxidation, fatty acid composition and peroxidizability, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, prostaglasndin and thromboxane synthesis, which may be concerned with blood flow, membrane fluidity, homeostasis and glomerular filtration rate in living body.
The effects of diet composition, reproductive condition and ketonuria and ketosis on the composition of rumen volatil fatty acids(VFA) and the blood lipid concentration were investigated in Holstein dairy cows. Six healthy cows(Group I), 9 ketonuric cows (Group II) and 8 ketotic cows(Group III) were examined at days 13-15 pre-partum(PRP) and at day 15 post-partum(POP). The ratios of concentrated feed supplied at PRP and POP were 0% and 15%, respectively, in Group I, 25% and 67% in Group II, and were 30% and 46% in Group III. The fulfillment rates of total digestive nutrient(TDN) and digestive coarse protein(DCP) increased at POP in each group. Although total VFA concentrations were lower at POP than at PRP in each group, the concentrations at PRP and POP were higher in Group I than in Groups II and III. The molar ratio of acetic acid decreased at POP in Group I, while the ratio increased at POP in Groups II and III. The molar ratio of propionic acid increased at POP in Group I, while it decreased in Groups II and III. Blood total cholesterol, free cholesterol, cholesterol esters, HDL-cholesterol, phospholipid and free fatty acid concentrations decreased at POP in all three groups, but these levels were low in Group I, high in Group III and intermediate in Group II at PRP and POP. Triglyceride concentration decreased after parturition in these three groups, but the decrease was most striking conspicuous in Group III.
This experiment was conducted to determine the Effect of soybean oil, dried palm oil powder and monoglyceride supplementation on growth performance and serum lipid changes in weaned pigs. One hundred twenty five cross-bred pigs((Y×L)×D, 6.00±0.79kg average initial BW) were used in a 21 d growth trial. Dietary treatments included SOY(containing 5% soybean oil), PALM(containing 5.5% dried palm oil powder) and SOPM0, 12.5 and 25(containing 2.5% soybean oil and 2.7% dried palm oil powder containing 0%, 12.5% and 25.0% monoglyceride, respectively). For the whole period, ADFI was increased in dried palm oil powder containing monoglyceride and PALM treatments compared with SOY and SOPM0 treatment(P<0.05). ADG and G/F were not affected by treatments. Digestibility of fat was higher(P<0.05) for pigs fed SOY diet than fed other diets. SOPM diets containing monoglyceride showed increased fat digestibility compared with PALM diet(P<0.05). SOPM12.5 and SOPM25 treatments were no difference with SOY treatment. However, there were no significant differences in digestibilities of DM, N and DE(P>0.05). Backfat thicknesses were not significantly different among treatments. Pigs fed SOY diet was decreased in serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, total lipid and was increased in free fatty acid than those fed other diet. Also, triglyceride concentration in serum was increased in PALM treatment compared with SOPM treatment(P=0.06). In conclusion, feeding soybean oil in weaned pigs showed higher fat digestibility and lower cholesterol and triglyceride concentration in serum than feeding only dried palm oil powder. Also, pigs fed monoglyceride were improved fat digestibility compared with those fed dried palm oil powder only.
Plasma cholesterol is increased in normal aging in both rodents and humans. This is associated with reduced elimination of cholesterol and decreased receptor-mediated clearance of plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The aims of this study were: (1) to determine age-related changes in plasma lipid profiles, and (2) to determine the effect of fenofibrate, an activator of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha (PPAR $\alpha$), on plasma lipid profiles in normal rats on a standard diet. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (n=15) were fed standard chow and water from 10 to 25 weeks of age. During that period, we measured daily food intake, body weight, fasting and random blood glucose levels, plasma total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and free fatty acid (FFA) levels. At 20 weeks of age, all rats were randomly divided into two groups: a fenofibrate group (in which rats were gavaged with 300 mg/kg/day of fenofibrate) and a control group (gavaged with water). Fenofibrate treatment lasted 5 weeks. There were no significant changes in daily food intake, blood glucose, and plasma TG level with age. Body weight, plasma TC, and FFA levels were significantly increased with age. Fenofibrate significantly decreased plasma concentrations of TC and FFA, which had been increased with age. However, fenofibrate did not influence the plasma concentration of TG, which had not increased with age. These results suggest that fenofibrate might have a novel role in preventing age-related hypercholesterolemia in SD rats on a normal diet.
Objectives : This study was carried out to identified the effects of distilled cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture to the obesity. Methods : Cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture was administered on the points of chung-wan(CV12), $Ch'{\breve{o}}nch'u$(ST25), and Chok-samni(ST36) on lowering lipid and oxidative capacity in biochemical and molecular biological aspects were investigated in obese rats fed with high fat diet. Results : 1. The contents of plasma ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ showed a tendency to decrease in the pharmacopuncture groups compared to the control group. In the pharmacopuncture groups, the values of ST25 and ST36 pharmacopuncture groups showed lower value. 2. The contents of plasma free fatty acids showed a tendency to decrease in pharmacopuncture groups compared to the control group. However, in the pharmacopuncture groups, the values were not significantly different. 3. Plasma triglyceride and glucose showed lower value in the ST25 pharmacopuncture groups compared with the other groups. 4. The activity of AST showed a tendency to decrease in the pharmacopuncture groups. However, the activity of ALT was not significantly different in all the treatment groups. 5. Plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol showed lower value in the ST25 and ST36 pharmacopuncture groups and HDL-cholesterol showed higher value in the CV12 pharmacopuncture groups than that of the other treatment groups. 6. Liver total cholesterol values didn't show significant difference in all the treatment groups, and triglyceride showed lower value in the pharmacopuncture groups. 7. The contents of plasma TEARS showed lower value in the ST25 pharmacopuncture group and contents of liver TBARS showed a tendency to decrease in the pharmacopuncture groups. However these values didn't show significant difference in the pharmaco puncture groups. 8. Liver super oxide dismutase activity showed higher value in the ST25 and ST36 pharmacopuncture groups, and the value of liver glutathione peroxidase and catalase activity showed a tendency to increase in the pharmacopuncture groups. However, these values showed no significant difference in the pharmacopuncture groups. 9. Expression of apo-B and E mRNA in liver cells was lower in the ST25 pharmacopuncture group than that of the other treatment groups. However, expression of $TNF-{\alpha}$ and leptin mRNA in adipose cell showed no difference among all the treatment groups. 10. ST25 pharmacopuncture group showed a good histological character of liver. It showed similar to that of normal group. However other treatment groups and control group showed slight vasodilation and slight fat accumulation. Conclusion : These results indicate that distilled cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture suppressed adipose tissue mass and lipid peroxidation, and increased antioxidant capacity.
The lipid lowering and antioxidant effects of Gansoo(BL18), Pungji(GB20) and Eumnungcheun(SP9) acupuncture in rats fed high fat diet were analyzed in biochemical and molecular biological aspects. The results obtained from this study are as follows : 1. In the body weight reduction, all acupuncture groups showed a high reduction compared to those of control group and in acupuncture groups, Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) acupuncture groups showed a high reduction. 2. The concentration of plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol with acupuncture groups showed a little decrease and in acupuncture groups, Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) groups showed a low values compared to those of other acupuncture groups. However, the tendency of HDL-cholesterol concentration showed no significant different. 3. The concentration of plasma ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ and free fatty acids showed a lowest values in the Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) acupuncture groups and the glucose concentration showed to decrease in all treated acupuncture groups. 4. The concentration of liver total cholesterol and triglyceride in Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) acupuncture groups showed a lower values than those of control group. 5. In all the acupuncture groups, the plasma glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT) activity showed a little decrease. In the glutamic pyruvate activity(GPT), Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) acupuncture groups showed a lower values than those of control groups. However the values of eumneungcheun acupuncture only group showed no significant difference to those of control group. 6. The plasma and liver Thiobabituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) concentration in Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) acupuncture groups were a lower than those of control group. However the values of eumneungcheun acupuncture group showed no significant difference to control group. 7. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in Gansoo(BL18) acupuncture group and Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) acupuncture groups showed a high values. The catalase (CAT) activity in all the acupuncture groups showed a higher values than those of control group. 8. In acupuncture groups, DNA expression of Apo-B and Apo-E showed a tendency to decrease, however DNA expression of leptin showed no significant difference in all treatment groups. DNA expression of $TNF-{\alpha}$ showed a increase in acupuncture groups. These results indicate that Gansoo(BL18) and Pungji(GB20) (especially Gansoo(BL18)) acupuncture affect the lipid metabolism and showed possibility of lowering adipose tissue mass and lipid peroxidation.
A cell-free enzyme solution prepared from suspension cultured cells of Phaseolus vulgaris successfully mediated conversions of cholesterol $\to$ cholestanol and 6-deoxo-28-norteasterone $\leftrightarrow$ 6-deoxo-28-nor-3-dehydroteasterone $\leftrightarrow$ 6-deoxo-28-nortyphasterol $\to$ 6-deoxo-28-norcastasterone $\to$ 28-norcastasterone. Al-though conversion of cholestanol to 6-deoxo-28-norteasterone intermediated by 6-deoxo-28-norcathasterone was not demonstrated, this strongly suggests that a complete set of biosynthetic enzymes catalyzing reactions from cholesterol to 28-norcastasterone via 6-deoxo-28-nor type brassinosteroids is endogenously present in the cells, which demonstrates that a $C_{27}$ brassinosteroids biosynthetic pathway, namely the late C-6 oxidation for $C_{27}$ brassinosteroids, is operative in the cells. Additionally, the enzyme solution mediated conversion of 28-norcastasterone to castasterone in the presence of S-adenosyl-methionine and NADPH, providing that the $C_{27}$ brassinosteroids biosynthesis is an important route to generate castasterone in the cells. Together with our previous finding that castasterone can be biosynthesized by the same biosynthetic pathway in tomato, this study demonstrates that the $C_{27}$ brassinosteroids biosynthesis is a common alternative process to maintain endo-genous level of castasterone, an active $C_{28}$ brassinosteroid, in plants.

The aim of the study was to investigate the influences of sodium fluoride on the body weight, lipid metabolism functional improvement, blood glucose level, protein component in the sera of rats which fed experimental diets for 5 weeks. Body weight gain of rats was higher in the NF25 group, NF30 group and NF50 group showed a significant difference from the basal diet group (BD group). The changes of the liver and the heart of each argan weights were observed compared to the BD group tends to appear lower in the oral NaF groups (p<0.05). Organ weight of each group of the others showed no significant difference (p<0.05). Serum concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, free cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), phospholipid (PL) and blood glucose were lower in BD group than basal diet plus sodium fluoride groups. Conversely depending on the concentration of sodium fluoride for the high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol level, it showed lower results. Serum total protein was observed low showed a significant difference in the NF50 group, there was no significant difference in the other groups (p<0.05). globulin and albumin concentration levels also showed the lowest results in the NF50 group.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of sources and levels of dietary fiber on lipid metabolism in rats. Male weanling rats of Sprague-Dawley were fed ad libitum a diet containing perctin or cellulose at 5%, 10% and 20% for 4 weeks. Rats fed pectin gained significantly less weight than rats fed cellulose. Feed efficiency ratio was decreased at 10% and 20% group rats of pectin compared to control rats. Pectin was effective in lowering liver cholesterol, total lipid and triglyceride content at all levels. Whereas the cellulose supplementation had no effect to reduce serum and liver lipids. Cellulose led to an accumulation of serum and liver cholesterol. The least accumulation of lipid was in fed a cholesterol free diet. It is likely that lipid metabolism is quite different between pectin and cellulose feeding.

This study was designed to establish the effects of Zingiber mioga, Zingiber mioga root and Zingiber ofiicinale on the lipid concentrations in hyperlipidemic rats. A total of 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 60$\pm$5g were fed one of four experimental diets for 4 weeks: a control diet (hyperlipidemic diet), diets supplemented with 3% of Z. mioga, 3% Z. mioga roots or 3% Z. officinale. The concentration of total cholesterol in serum was significantly decreased by 31% in Z. mioga group compared to the control group. The HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly higher in Z. mioga and Z. mioga root supplemented groups than in control group. Triglyceride concentration in serum and liver significantly decreased with 3% Zingiber supplemented groups compared with control group, but had no significant differences among three Zingiber supplemented groups. The contents of total cholesterol triglyceride free cholesterol and cholesteryl ester in liver were remarkably lower in Zingiber supplemented groups than in control group. However, hepatic phospholipid level was not showed significant effect.
