  • Effects of rapid thermal annealing of bismuth telluride thin films on their thermoelectric properties were investigated. Films with four different compositions were elaborated by co-sputtering of Bi and Te targets. Rapid thermal treatments in range of $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ were carried out during 10 minutes under the reducing atmosphere (Ar with 10% $H_2$). As the temperature of thermal treatment increased, carrier concentrations of films decreased while their mobilities increased. These changes were clearly observed for the films close to the stoichiometric composition. Rapid thermal treatment was found to be effective in improving the thermoelectric properties of $Bi_2Te_3$ films. Recrystallization of $Bi_2Te_3$ phase has caused the enhancement of thermoelectric properties, along with the decrease of the carrier concentration. Maximum values of Seebeck coefficient and power factor were obtained for the films treated at $400^{\circ}C$ (about $-128{\mu}V/K$ and $9{\times}10^{-4}\;W/K^2m$, respectively). With further higher temperature ($500^{\circ}C$), thermoelectric properties deteriorated due to the evaporation of Te element and subsequent disruption of film's structure.

  • This study was carried out in order to elucidate effects of types of binder used in pre-coated layer on optical properties and printability of top-coated layer. Coated papers with four different types of SB latex were prepared. Tg, particle size and gel contents of latices were of different. Optical properties and printability of coated paper including print mottle were evaluated. It was confirmed that properties of pre-coated layer distinctively affected final properties of top-coated layer. Tg was found to be the most influencing factor on the print mottle of coated paper: the SB latex with lower Tg and higher particle size resulted in a superior print mottle. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top-coated layer can be controlled by adjusting pre-coated layer.

  • This research was accomplished to evaluate possibility of using paper sludge for the raw materials of wood based panel products. The experimental panels were manufactured by four mixed ratios, the proportion of paper sludge to wood particle: 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, 50:50% (oven dry weight basis) and by three composition types, sludge-particle mixed board, three layered sludge-particle board and three layered particle board. They were tested mechanical (bending strength and internal bond) and physical properties (water absorption, thickness swelling and linear expansion). From the results they were shown that bending strength of mixed and three layered sludge-particle board were decreased with increasing of composition ratios of sludge. And the mechanical and physical properties of the boards of three layered composition types have superior to those of mixed composition type. Although composition ratios of sludge increased, the internal bond strength and dimensional stability of sludge-particle board not decreased quantitatively. We concluded that the mechanical and physical properties of three layered sludge-particle board were similar w those of three layered particle-board (control) made by our laboratory design. Therefore, it was recognized that paper sludge can be used as potential raw material in particle-board manufacturing industry.

  • This study was conducted in order to predict the chemical and physical properties by climatic factors during the growing season of flue-cured tobacco as soon as possible. The data of eight chemical and five physical properties were collected from "Analysis of physical and chemical properties on farm leaf tobacco" conducted at KT&G Central Research Institute from 1987 through 2006. Data of climatic factors from April to July in 10 districts were collected from Korea Meteorological Adminstration. Except for yellowness(b), all probabilities of linear regression equations between the climatic factors(X) and the average contents of twelve grades(whole plant) for chemical and physical properties(Y) were significant($P{\leq}0.05$). The predicable probabilities within ${\pm}20%$ range of difference were 100% in ether extract content, in nicotine content, and in filling value, 90% in total nitrogen content, and 70% in total sugar content. These results suggest that the regression equations may be useful to predict the average content of twelve grades for eight chemical and four physical properties by climatic factors during the growing season of flue-cured tobacco at the beginning of August.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze whether seawater has positive effects on appearance characteristics, such as CIE a*, and to determine the gas composition concentration that is suitable for maintaining it. Pork hind meat was cured with four types of curing agent for 5 d at 4℃. The different curing agents comprised the control salt, control nitrite pickling salt (CN), treatment brine, and treatment bittern (BT). The cured hams were cooked at 65℃ for 4 h and packaged at O2:N2 gas ratios of 7:3, 8:2, and 9:1 for 3 wk. The physicochemical properties were assessed immediately after heating the sample, and the color properties were measured after a 3 wk storage period. Based on the correlation results of the physicochemical properties, BT had a higher curing and cooking yield than the other treatments, owing to its high salinity. Results of color properties for BT (7:3) and CN (8:2) showed similar color CIE L*, CIE a* chroma, and hue angle values. Therefore, BT can be said to be a sous-vide curing agent suitable for preserving the color of ham, and a high nitrogen concentration of 30% helps to maintain the appearance of seawater sous-vide ham.

  • This study was conducted to determine the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of four commercially available low gold-based crown and bridge alloy produced in Korea. Four dental casting gold-silver-palladium alloys, i.e., A, B, C and D (code of alloys) were selected for the evaluation of chemical composition, ultimate tensile strength, elongation. values and Vickers hardness. The chemical composition of test specimens was analyzed by both emission spectrography and wet gravitation method with a 1.5gm of low gold ingot. The tensile properties and Vickers hardness was determined with cast specimens treated in following three conditions; as-cast, softening heat treatment and hardening heat treatment. The tensile testing bars were cast in accordance with the model designed by Gettleman and Harrison (1969) which was modified from the A. D. A. Specification No. 14 for dental chromium-cobalt casting alloy. Nine tensile test specimens were made from a split silicone mold for each of the test alloys to the size of 2.5mm in diameter and a gauge length of 10mm. All four alloys were handled in accordance with conventional methods used in Type III gold alloys. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation were measured on an Instron Universal Tensile Testing Machine (Model 1125, Japan) operated at a crosshead rate of 0.1cm/min. Elongation values were measured using Digital Measuring Microscope (MS-152, FUSOH, Japan). Vickers hardness was determined with a Vickers Hardness Tester (Model VKH-l, Japan) at a 1.0kg load on a mounted tensile test specimen. The following results were obtained from this study; 1. All tested alloys were composed of Au, Ag, Pd, Cu, Zn and Fe in common. The composition rate of gold for all four alloys was found in the range of $42{\sim}47$ weight % as shown below. Alloy A; Au 45%, Ag 40.2%, Pd 5.76%, others 9.04%. Alloy B; Au 47.1%, Ag 29.03%, Pd 6.98%, others 16.92%. Alloy C; Au 45%, .Ag 26.9%, Pd 6.83%, others 21.07%. Alloy D; Au 41.8%, Ag 34.4%, Pd 6.95%, others 16.85%. 3. The ultimate tensile strength of the four alloys was in the range of $31{\sim}82kg/mm^2$. The test results were shown in the below order from the highest value; As-cast condition; D, B, C, A. Softening heat treament; B, C, D, A. Hardening heat treatment; D, B, C, A. 4. The test :results of the elongation rate for each alloy were in the range of $0.5{\sim}18%$. The test results were shown in the below order from the highest value; As-cast condition; A, D, B, C. Softening heat treatment; A, C, D, B. Hardening heat treatment; C, D, B, A. 5. Vickers hardness for each of the four alloys was in the range of $120{\sim}230$. The test results were shown in the below order from the highest value; As-cast condition; C, B, D, A Softening heat treatment; D, B, C, A. Hardening heat treatment; D, A, C, B. 6. There were no differences in the physical properties between as-cast condition and softening heat treatment.

  • The present work is aimed to analyze the creep characteristics of a turbojet engine turbine blade using the theta projection method. The theta projection method has been widely used due to its advantages and flexibility. For the creep characteristic analysis of the turbine blade, tests are performed considering the operating conditions and the non-linear material properties. Results from the creep test are fitted using the four theta model. The predicted proprieties using the four theta model are compared with the prediction model and creep test results. To obtain an optimum value of the four theta parameters in non-linear square method, a number of computing processes in the non-linear least square method were carried out to obtain full creep curves. Results using the theta model has more than 0.95 value of $R^2$. The results between the experimental values and predicted four theta model has about 90.0% accuracy. The theta projection method can be utilized for a design purpose to predict the creep behavior.
