This study searched fundamental basis of four-constitution medicine from the principle of "Yeokgyeong(易經)" that is scientific foundations of Dongmu(東武) Ijema(李濟馬)'s four-constitution medicine based on system of "Yeokgyeong(易經)" and looked into the principle of our-constitution medicine ontologically. That is to say, the translation of five phase(五行) that represented in "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)" regulated that substance of five phase is spleen-earth(脾土). But four-constitution medicine mentions the substance as heart-earth(心土) in place of spleen-earth. Because of it's standpoint, the differences on meanings between spleen-earth and heart-earth on the substance of five-phase becomes motive to interpret scientific system of four-constitution medicine fundamental wrongly. For that reason, the research of this title is needed. The results was summarized as follows. First, in ontological view point of structure of four-constitution, five phase is substance and phenomenon, in other words it includes earth of unrevealed substance and wood, fire, metal and water of self-manifestation of existence. Second, in axiological view point, the four-constitution represent principles and contents of four virtues of human nature. And so the innate four virtues ontologically based on four-constitution of heaven. Therefore a human being is endowed innately benevolence, courtesy, justice, intelligence of four virtues. Third, the concept of greater and lesser of Eum(陰, yin) and Yang(陽, yang) in Dongmu(東武)'s four-constitution medicine is four-constitution in "Yeokgyeong(易經)". Greater principle(太極) and four-constitution is a relation of substance and phenomenon. Fourth, the origin and structure of four-constitution medicine includes the structure and principle of natural philosophical Eumyang and four-constitution, the human-centric theory and sciences of human nature and natural laws and medical experience of traditional oriental medicine and medical principle.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of human constitution adapting to environment. Human constitution adapting to climate zone is basically classified into four types: The $Af^{\ominus}$ constitution adapting to warm-humid climate, the $Aw^{\ominus}$ constitution adapting to warm-arid climate, the $Dw^{\oplus}$ constitution adapting to cold-arid climate and the $Df^{\oplus}$ constitution adapting to cold-humid climate. The ${\ominus}constitution$ can be changed into a ${\oplus}constitution$ by adapting to cold climate or by heredity combination with the ${\oplus}constitution$. The ${\oplus}constitution$ can be changed into a ${\ominus}constitution$ by adapting to warm climate or by heredity combination with the ${\ominus}constitution$. The four constitution types consequently can be classified into eight types: The $Af^{\ominus}$ constitution, the $Af^{\oplus}$ constitution, the $Aw^{\ominus}$ constitution, the $Aw^{\oplus}$ constitution, the $Dw^{\oplus}$ constitution, the $Dw^{\ominus}$ constitution, the $Df^{\oplus}$ constitution and the $Df^{\ominus}$ constitution. This study investigated the characteristics of fingers of people with these constitutions and confirmed that the fingers of the ${\ominus}constitution$ man are longer, slender and cooler than the fingers of the ${\oplus}constitution$ man.
This study attempts to illuminate Ijema's philosophy of Four-Constitution as a new political theory of human beings as it has been regarded as the philosophy of Body-Politics and Life World[Body-Community], the notion of which was formulated quite uniquely according to the doctrine of Post-Juhi(朱子) in Joseon(朝鮮) dynasty. The philosophy of Four-Constitution was the result of succession of and reflection upon a long tradition; since the crisis aroused of Confucianism as a pragmatic science and a pure theory of science, after having collided with the science of the west, Ijema as a Confucian scholar and a oriental medicine struck upon and opened a new way to a discursive solution, the philosophy of Four-Constitution as Body Politics and Life World of New Paradigm by reconsidering the fundamental spirit and ideology of the doctrine of confucian tradition.
Objectives : The aim of the study is to investigate the correlation of Ryodoraku score and four constitution in the patients with chronic low back pain. Methods : Using Pearson's correlation test, we divided 79 patients into two groups(normal and chronic low back pain group) and analyzed the correlation between Ryodoraku score and major constitution rate of four constitution. Results : 1. Ryodoraku score in the chronic low back pain group was mostly found to be below 40 ${\mu}A$, regardless of constitution. 2. There was negative correlation on F2 in lesser Yin person of chronic low back pain group, and there was positive correlation on H4 H5 F2 F4 and F5 in greater Yin person of chronic low back pain group. 3. There was negative correlation on H1 and H6 in lesser Yang person of normal group. 4. There was negative correlation on H6 in lesser Yang person of total group including normal and chronic low back pain group. Conclusion : These results suggest that roydoraku should be correlated to four constitutional diagnosis in part and available to increase accuracy of four constitutional or Ryodoraku diagnosis.
Objective : This study aims to search Four-constitution Medicine based acupuncture by investigators and its effect on constitution-specific symptoms. Method : Among 463 oriental medical doctors who are the members of society of Four-constitution Medicine, 191 results are collected. The items of the questionnaire are sex, age, work experiences, working type, constitution diagnosis & prescription, the use of constitution acupuncture and so on. Result : The proportion of acupuncture treatment applied constitution-based acupuncture to patients are "Must Use" 12.6%, "Almost Use" 14.1%, "Sometimes Use" 42.9% and "Never Use" is 1.0%. The average ratio of patients treated by constitution-based acupuncture to all patients is 47%. 1. Digestive tract disease is found to be the most effective disease with constitution based acupuncture. Musculoskelectal problems, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, neuropsychiatric disease and urogenital disease are followed. On the oriental medicine, spleen system disease is the most frequently applied and heart system disease, neuropsychiatric disease, liver system disease, locomotorium disease and pulmonary system disease are followed. 2. Acupuncture therapeutic measures are different according to disease. For example, Sa-am acupuncture is the most widely used for spleen system disease, locomotorium disease, heart system disease, neuropsychiatric disease, pulmonary system disease. Eight constitution medicine acupuncture is effective for ophthalmic & otolaryngologic disease. Conclusion : This study is to investigate constitution-based acupuncture technique. In conclusion, the most widely used technique is Sa-am acupuncture and it is the most successful in treating digestive tract disease.
1. Objectives Theoretically Healthy Condition of four constitution is based on intact state of four fundamental factors - digestion, urination, perspiration, defecation. Each one of these four factors is specifically related to its respective constitution. We made SHI(Sasangin Health Index) 10 items from four factors, and examined clinical efficacy of the four factors as index of health status in four constitution. 2. Methods and Procedures We offered QSCCII, SHI and SF-36 questionnaires to adults who had a periodic medical examination. 233 adults were classified to one of four constitution. We compared means of 8 scale scores of SF-36, and computed the correlation coefficient between 8 scale scores of SF-36 and 10 item scores of SHI in four constitution. 3. Results In Soyangin, stool volume and frequency are weakly correlated with health status(P<0.05). In Soeumin, appetite is weakly correlated with health status(P<0.05). In Taeumin, there is no correlation between perspiration and health status. 4. Conclusions 2 factors - digestion, defecation - had clinical efficacy as index of health status.

In this paper, we performed a quantitative analysis of face color according to the health status of four constitution types. 205 Korean male in age from 65 to 80 were participated in this study and 85 subjects were finally selected for the analysis. Imaging process techniques were employed to extract feature variables associated with face color from a frontal facial image. Using the extracted feature variables, the correlations between face color and health status, face color and health status in each constitution type, and face color and four constitution types in heath status group were investigated. As the result, it was observed that the face color of healthy group contained more red component and less blue component than unhealthy group. For each constitution type, the face parts showing a significant difference according to health status were different. This is the first work which reports the correlation between the face color and health status of four constitution types with a objective method, and the numerical data for the face color according to the health status of four constitution types will be an objective standard to diagnose a patient's health status.
Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) doesn't have pretty large quantity of contents, so indications of Four-Constitution Medicine formulas on that medical book are small. Therefore, indications of Four-Constitution Medicine formula need to be extended for broader clinical use of Four-Constitution Medicine. There would be some methods to do that, and we could review the literatures that Four-Constitution Medicine formulas are based on. We reviewed Bojungyikgi-tang on "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)", and we found that if the Four-Constitution Medicine formula is based on Sanghan formula(傷寒方) or non-classical formula(後世方), it is worth adding more indications of base formulas to those of Four-Constitution Medicine formula. For exmaple, Indications of Bojungyikgi-tang for So-Eum type could be extended by indications of non-classical formula(後世方) Bojungyikgi-tang and modified formula(加減方) Bojungyikgi-tang on Dongeuibogam, We supposed 23 indications of non-classical formula(後世方) Bojungyikgi-tang, and 20 indications of modified formula(加減方) Bojungyikgi-tang as possible indications of Bojungyikgi-tang for So-Eum type.
In classfying human being into four types: Soeum-in(少陰人), Taeeum-in(太陰人), Soyang-in(少陽人), Taeyang-in(太陽人), let, s try to match four season's image to the four type constitution. 1. spring's image(春) soeum-in(少陰人) summer's image(夏) taeeum-in(太陰人) autumn's image(秋) soyang-in(少陽人) winter's image(冬) taeyang-in(太陽人). 2. Treating disease, we should also consider essence chi(精氣) state.
The investigation were carried out the 37 patient with cerebrovascular accidents who had been treated in Oriental Medical Hospital in Kyung Hee University and in KangNam Uy Lim, and the 10 examinees who had been worked in Medical Hospital in Kyung Hee University. The consitution which had discriminated by survey, which had discriminated by study on the morphological diagrammings, which had discriminated by the result of the impatient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription. The Prostaglandin E2 in blood for 47 persons (37 patients & 10 examinees) was measured. The following results were obtained. 1.In the constitution which had discriminated by survey, in the value of Prostaglandin E2 in bood of ammong four constitutiens didn,t showed significant differance. 2.In the constitution which had discriminated by study on the morphological diagrammings, in the value of Prostaglandin E2 in bood of ammong four constitutiens didn,t showed significant differance. 3.In the constitution which had discriminated by the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription, the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of among four constitutions didn,nt showed signicant differance. 4.In the constitution which had discriminated by colligated three methods(survey, morphological diagrammings, the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription), the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of ammong four constituion didn,t showed significant differnce. 5.In the constitution which had discriminated by survey, a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others was conducted. Only the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood between in the TAE-EUM-IN(太陰人) and the others of female showed significant differance. 6.In the constitution which had discriminated by study on the morphological diagrammings,a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others was conducted. Only the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood between in the SO-EUM-IN(少陰人) and the others of male showed significant differance. 7.In the constitution whichhad discriminated by the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription,a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others was conducted. Only the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood between in the TAE-EUM-IN(太陰人) and the others of male showed significant differance. 8.In the constitution which had discriminated was the colligated three methods(survey, morphological diagrammings, the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription),a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others didn,t showed significant differnce. In this connected study is inadequete at present. But if the study is done persistently, the analysis of various ingredient in the body enables objectification in differentiation of four types of physical constitution as the supplemental method.
