  • In this paper, a study on the frictional losses and dynamic behaviors of a reciprocating compression mechanism used in small refrigeration compressor is performed. In the problem formulation of the compressor dynamics, the viscous frictional force between piston and cylinder wall is considered in order to determine the coupled dynamic behaviors of piston and crankshaft supported on a thrust ball bearing. The solutions of the equations of motion of the reciprocating mechanism along with the time dependent Reynolds equations for the lubricating film between piston and cylinder wall and lubricant films of the journal bearings are obtained simultaneously. The hydrodynamic forces of journal bearings are calculated using finite bearing model and G$\hat{u}$m-bel boundary condition. And, a Newton-Raphson procedure was employed in solving the nonlinear equations of piston and crankshaft with a thrust ball bearing. The results explored the effects of design parameters on the frictional losses and dynamic stability of the compression mechanism.

  • The robust generalized H2 filtering problem for a class of discrete time uncertain linear systems satisfying the sum quadratic constraints(SQCs) is considered. The objective of this paper is to develop robust stability condition using SQCs and design a robust generalized Ha filter to take place of the existing robust Kalman filter. The robust generalized H2 filter is designed based on newly derived robust stability condition. The robust generalized Ha filter bounds the energy to peak gain from the energy bounded exogenous disturbances to the estimation errors under the given positive scalar ${\gamma}$. Unlike the robust Lalman filter, it does not require any spectral assumptions about the exogenous disturbances . Therefore the robust generalized H2 filter can be considered as a deterministic formulation of the robust Kalman filter. Moreover, the variance of the estimation error obtained by the proposed filter is lower than that by the existing robust Kalman filter. The robustness of the robust generalized H2 filter against the uncertainty and the exogenous signal is illustrated by a simple numerical example.

  • Based on the orthotropic hypoelasticity formulation, a triaxial constitutive model of concrete is proposed. To account for increasing ductility in high confinement of concrete, the ductility enhancement is considered using so called the strain enhancement factor. It is also developed a three-dimensional finite element model for reinforced concrete structural members based on the proposed constitutive law of concrete with the smeared crack approach. The concrete confinement effects due to the beam-column joint are investigated through numerical examples for simple beam and structural beam member. Concrete at compression fibers in the vicinity of beam-column joint behaves dominant not only by the uniaxial compressive state but also by the biaxial and triaxial compressive states. For the reason of the severe confinement of concrete in the beam-column joint, the flexural critical cross-section is observed at a small distance away from the beam-column joint. These observations should be utilized for the economic design when the concrete structural members are subjected to high confinement due to the influence of beam-column joint.

  • We have investigated the effectiveness of a gravure printing method for the fabrication of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and Organic Thin Film Transistor (OTFT). Printing of the organic layers was performed with a small-scale gravure coating machine, while the metallic layers were vacuum-evaporated. Devices with gravure-printed layers are at least comparable with the spin-coated devices. Effects of the solvent formulation and surface energy mismatch between the organic layer materials on the printed patterns and device performance were discussed. We will present the initial design and experimental data of OTFT fabricated by roll-type soft contact transfer process.

  • In the ground-structure-based topology optimization, beam elements are regarded to be rigidly connected to each other, and joints are assumed to have infinite stiffness. Thus the optimized topology of a structure is obtained according to the assumption of no joint effect, and the resulting structure should be manufactured in one piece if the joint effect is to be excluded as much as possible. The underlying problems are that 1) the performance of the structure might be seriously decreased if the members of the structure are connected through welding or bolting, not manufactured in one piece, and 2) the topology of the structure will be changed if the joint effect is taken into account. In the paper, the assemblage issue is considered on topology optimization, and a new formulation based on the joint stiffness-varied ground beam structure is developed. Joints of a beam structure are modeled by elastic spring elements whose stiffnesses are controlled by design variables during the optimization.

  • To optimize the mixing ratio of ingredients to obtain the best sensory qualities, a response surface methodology with a central composite design was performed on hot water extracts using crucian carp Carassius carassius treated with diluted vinegar (pH 5.24-5.30). The optimal solutions for four parameters (overall acceptability, odor, flavor, and taste) were obtained using the second-order response surface regression models. The optimal formulation appeared to be 124.15 g of ginger and 96.09 g of garlic with 1 kg of ground crucian carp meat based on the desirability function technique.

  • Accurate load-carrying capacities and moment distributions of thin circular plates are obtained for clamped or simply-supported boundary condition under various concentrated circular loadings. The material is regarded as perfectly-plastic based on an arbitrary yield function such as the Tresca yield function, the Johansen yield function, and the farmily of .betha.-norms which possesses the von Mises yield function and the Frobenius norm. To obtain the lower bound solutions, a maximization formulation is derived and implemented for efficient numerical calculation with a finite difference method and the modified Newton's method. The numerical results demonstrate plastic collapse behavior of circular plates and provide their design criteria.

  • This paper presents dynamic modeling and controller design of a tracked vehicle installed with the double rod type ERSU(electro-rheological suspension unit). A 16 degree-of-freedom model for the tracked vehicle is established by Lagrangian method followed by the formulation of a new sky-ground hook controller. This controller takes account for both the ride quality and the steering stability. The weighting parameter between the two performance requirements is adopted to adjust required performance characteristics with respect to the operation conditions such as road excitation. The parameter is appropriately determined by employing a fuzzy algorithm associated with the vehicle motion. Computer simulations are undertaken in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system. Acceleration values at the driver's seat are analyzed under bump road profile, while frequency responses of vertical acceleration are investigated under random road excitation.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal mixing ratio of Alaska Pollack (Theragra chalcogramma) and olive oil in the preparation of sausage. The experiment was designed according to the central composite design for estimating the response surface, which demonstrated 10 experimental points including 2 replicates for Alaska Pollack and olive oil. The physical, mechanical and sensory properties of test materials were measured. A canonical form and perturbation plot showed the influence of each ingredient on the final product mixture. Measurement results of the physical and mechanical properties showed a significant increase or decrease in the following properties: dough sweetness (p<0.05); sausage L (p<0.05), a (p<0.001), and b (p<0.01); hardness (p<0.01), chewiness (p<0.05), and gumminess (p<0.01). Also, the sensory measurements showed a significant improvement in color (p<0.05), flavor (p<0.01), taste (p<0.001), tenderness (p<0.05), chewiness (p<0.01), mositness (p<0.05), and overall quality (p<0.01). As a result, the optimum formulation by numerical and graphical methods was calculated as Alaska Pollack 35.74 g and olive oil 7 g.
