  • This study was to investigate the effect of adding additive as tannin, rice husk and charcoal, for reducing the formaldehyde emission level, on the adhesion properties of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin for particleboard. We controlled the hot-pressing time, temperature and pressure to determine the bonding strength and formaldehyde emission. Blends of various UF resin/additives (tannin, rice husk and charcoal) compositions were prepared. To determine and compare the effect of additives (tannin, rice husk and charcoal) content, 0, 5, 10 and 15%, by weight of UF resin, were used. $NH_4Cl$ as hardener added. To determine the level of formaldehyde emission, we used the desiccator, perforator and 20 L-small chamber method. The formaldehyde emission level decreased with increased additions of additive (except rice husk). Also, increased hot-pressing time decreased formaldehyde emission level. At a charcoal replacement ratio of only 15%, the formaldehyde emission level is under F ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ grade (emit < $0.3mg/{\ell}$). Curing of the high tannin additive content in this adhesive system indicated that the bonding strength increased. But, in the case of rice husk and charcoal, the bonding strength was much lower due to the inorganic substance. Furthermore, rice husk was poor in bonding strength as well as formaldehyde emission than tannin and charcoal.

  • This study was designed to measure the amount of formaldehyde in the disposable diapers of seven different products. It was aimed to investigate the actual situation of the diaper consumption and to relate it to the amount of formaldehyde measured. The degree of recognizability on the harmfulness of formaldehyde was also studied. The amount of formaldehyde was measured by means of the Acetyl Acetone method. The a ual situation of consumption and the recognizability of the formaldehyde were investigated by questionnaire. In the survey, the subjects had their babies aged from 0$\~$3 years and lived in Seoul. The statistical methods used were simple frequency and chi-square. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1) Among seven (7) different disposable diapers, two were found to have less amount of formaldehyde than the Japanese regulation. 2) From the survey on the actual situation of consumption most respondents ($53.7\%$) experienced the dermatological problem after using the disposable diapers. Actually for the diapers which had a lot of formaldehyde, the respondents experienced the problems more severely. 3) The recognizability of formaldehyde was very low. The recognizability on the harnfulness of formaldehyde was lower, which represented the consumers had least or no knowledge about the formaldehyde release problem.

  • In order to control free formaldehyde release from fabric finished with urea-formaldehyde precondensate, the resin finished fabric was padded in urea or acylamide solution, dried and cured at $140^{\circ}C$. The effect of aftertreatment with urea or acrylamide on free formaldehyde release and on characteristics of resin finished fabric were examined. It was shown that aftertreatment with urea was effective to control free formaldehyde release, the free formaldelyde content in aftertreated fabric could be reduced from 900 ppm to 200 ppm and formaldehyde release under accelerated storage condition was also reduced from 8000 ppm to 1000 ppm. Polyacrylamide formed in the fiber during aftertreatment appeared to be a formaldehyde capture. Especially by washing the aftertreated fabric, the ability to control formaldehyde release under accelerated condition was not dimimished in contrast with aftertreated with unea. It suggests that polyacrylamide can be used as a formaldehyde capture which withstand diminution from washing.

  • Formaldehyde (FA) is an economically important chemical, and has been found to cause various types of toxic damage to the body. Formaldehyde-induced toxic damage involves reactive oxygen species (ROS) that trigger subsequent toxic effects and inflammatory responses, which may increase risk of cancer. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to investigate the possible toxic mechanism in bone marrow caused by formaldehyde. In accordance with the principle of randomization, the mice were divided into four groups of 6 mice per group. One group was exposed to ambient air and the other three groups were exposed to different concentrations of formaldehyde (20, 40, $80mg/m^3$) for 15 days in the respective inhalation chambers, 2h a day. At the end of the 15-day experimental period, all mice were killed. Bone marrow cells were obtained. Some of those were used for the determination of blood cell numbers, bone marrow karyote numbers, CFU-F, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content; others were used for the determination of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), cell cycle and Bcl-2, Bax, CytC protein expression. WBC and PLT numbers in median and high dose groups were obvious reduced, but there was no change on RBC numbers. There was also reduced numbers of bone marrow karyotes and CFU-F in the high dose group. SOD activity was decreased, but MDA content was increased. MMP and Bcl-2 expression were decreased with increasing formaldehyde concentration, while expression of Bax and Cyt C was increased. We also observed change in cell cycling, and found that there was S phase arrest in the high dose group. Our study suggested that a certain concentration of formaldehyde could have toxic effects on the hematopoietic system, with oxidative stress as a critical effect.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the physico-mechanical properties and characteristics on reduction of formaldehyde and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) emission from particleboard (PB) with added volcanic pozzolan. Pozzolan was added as a scavenger at the level of 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.% of urea formaldehyde (UF) resin for PB manufacture. The moisture content, density, thickness swelling, water absorption and physical properties of PBs were examined. Three-point bending strength and internal bond strength were determined using a universal testing machine. Formaldehyde and TVOC were determined by desiccator and 20L small chamber methods. With increasing pozzolan content the physical and mechanical properties of the PBs were not significantly changed, but formaldehyde and TVOC emissions were decreased. Because pozzolan has a rough and irregular surface with porous form, it can be used as a scavenger for PBs at a content up to 10 wt.% without any detrimental effect on the physical and mechanical properties.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the synthesis method, melamine content, and GPC parameters (such as flow rate, column-detector temperature, and sample injection temperature) on the molecular weight of melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins. Two different synthesis methods were employed. In the first method, MUF-A resins were synthesized by simultaneously reacting urea, formaldehyde, and melamine (5%, 10%, and 20%) using the reaction of alkaline-acid-alkaline steps under controlled temperature and viscosity. In the second method, MUF-B resins were synthesized by first reacting melamine at the same levels with formaldehyde and then by adding urea. The highest weight average molecular weight (Mw) of MUF-A resins was found at 10% melamine content when the flow rate was 0.3 and 0.8 ml/min; Mw decreased slightly at 20% melamine content. The results showed that Mw increased with an increase in the melamine content when the flow rate was 0.5 and 1.0 ml/min. In addition, Mw was the highest when the flow rate, column-detector temperature, and injection temperature were 0.3 ml/min, 50℃, and 25℃, respectively. On the contrary, MUF-B resins had greater Mw and number average molecular weight (Mn) than MUF-A resins. Overall, Mw and Mn increased as the melamine content increased. The optimal GPC parameter for MUF resins was determined as follows: a flow rate of 0.5 ml/min, a column-detector temperature of 50℃, and a sample injection temperature of 50℃.

  • As the properties of the melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins were changing during their storage time, this study investigated the impacts of the synthesis method and melamine content of the MUF resins on the pH, apparent viscosity, molecular weights, and crystallinity to estimate these properties over storage times of up to 30 days. Melaminesat three addition levels (5, 10, and 20 wt% based on the resin solids) were simultaneously reacted with urea and formaldehyde (MUF-A resins), while those at the same addition levels were first reacted with formaldehyde and then with urea(MUF-B resins). The pH values of the MUF-A and MUF-B resins decreased linearly as the storage time increased; the apparent viscosity increased linearly for the low melamine contents (5% and 10%) but increased exponentially for 20%. As anticipated, the molecular weights (Mw and Mn) increased linearly with the storage time, with a steeper increase in the Mw of the MUF-B resins compared with that of the MUF-A resins. The crystallinity of the two resin types decreased with storage time at higher melamine content. The relationships between these properties and the storage time made it possible to estimate the property changes in these resins synthesized by the different synthesis methods and melamine contents; this could help predict the properties of such resins in the industry during their storage.

  • This work attempted to manufacture glued-laminated timber (Glulam) bonded with melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin adhesives at various melamine contents from 20% to 50% under high frequency (HF) heating for a very short time. Two preparation methods were employed to prepare MUF resin adhesives with different melamine contents: one-batch method of synthesizing MUF resins in a single batch, and two-batch method of mixing urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin with melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin that had been synthesized separately. As the melamine content increased, the gelation time and peak temperature of MUF resins decreased. The adhesion performance of plywood showed that the one-batch MUF resin adhesive with 50% melamine content only satisfied the standard requirement of water resistance. Thus, the one-batch MUF resin adhesive with 50% melamine content was applied for bonding wood lamina from four softwood species such as Japanese larch, Korean red pine, Korean pine and Japanese cedar to manufacture Glulam under HF heating. All Glulam samples bonded with the one-batch MUF resin adhesives with 50% melamine content except those from Korean Red Pine satisfied the requirement in water soaking or boiling water delamination test as an exterior grade Glulam. The presence of rosin in Korean Red Pine was believed to be responsible for its poor adhesion. These results showed that the one-batch MUF resin adhesives with 50% melamine content provided acceptable water resistance with exterior grade Glulam manufactured under HF heating.

  • This paper is concerned with formaldehyde release from durable press finished rayon fabrics. $100\%$ rayon fabrics were treated with 3 kinds of commercial N-methylol crosslinking agents using a pad-dry cure technique. Aqueous extractions of fabric samples were carried out at $40^{\circ}C$ under pH's of 4, 7, 10. Formaldehyde release was evaluated for the types of resins, catalyst concentrations and extraction conditions. Results indicated that the higher concentration of catalyst leads to the more fixation of resin on the fabric. Total formaldehyde released to the extract was decreased as the catalyst concentration increased. For the resin types, the amount of formaldehyde released was in the order of DMU>MDMDHEU>DMDHEU. Free formaldehyde content in the extract was in the order of pH10>pH4>pH7. This result proved that resins are least resistant to alkaline hydrolysis and the N-C bond cleavage under alkaline condition. Under acidic condition, however, N-methylol formaldehyde was accumulated before the release of free formaldehyde. This suggested the C·0 bond cleavalge to form carbonium - immonim intermediate.
