  • To recommend adequate covering materials and shapes of rice nursery bed for mechanical transplanting rice seedling, measuring of microclimate inside the rice nursery protected by polyethylene tunnel type, polyester tunnel type, and polyester flat type was compared to that outside the nursery. The vapor pressure deficit inside the polyester tunnel and polyethylene tunnel was higher than that outside the tunnel during daytime on a sunny day. During daytime on cloudy with rain day, the vapor pressure deficit inside polyester tunnel was higher than that in polyethylene tunnel or outside the nursery tunnel. The heat fluxes in the rice nursery tunnel during daytime flowed more to the soil than to the outside tunnel. Amounts of soil heat fluxes in polyethylene tunnel were higher than in polyester flat and polyester tunnel. The vertical profile of air temperature inside the nursery tunnel came to inversion during daytime and was lapse during nighttime regardless weather condition. The maximum temperature inside the nursery tunnel were 47.2$^{\circ}C$ in polyethylene tunnel and 37.$0^{\circ}C$ in polyester tunnel which was 21.1$^{\circ}C$ and 10.9$^{\circ}C$ higher than outside the tunnels respectively on sunny day. On cloudy with rain day, the temperature inside nursery tunnel was higher 8.4$^{\circ}C$ and 4.$0^{\circ}C$ polyethylene and polyester tunnel respectively then outside. Daily temperature changes became larger in the polyethylene tunnel, polyester tunnel, and outside the nursery tunnel in order. The rice seedling growth in polyester tunnel was better than the other nursery beds.

  • This study was carried out to investigated the relation between air depositions and soil properties in Gyeongsanman province. Soil pH was average 4.40 in regions, and was the highest soil pH value in Miryang-sanne(pH 5.02), the lowest pH value in Namhae-seomyeon(pH4.08). Soil pH, soil organic matter content, avail phosphorus, K, Ca and cation exchange capacity(CEC) were significantly different among regions(p<0.05). Pb in Heavy metal content was 3.86mg/kg average value, and was the highest in Keo-je region(9.87mg/kg), the lowest in Mryang-sanne (0.86mg/kg). Zn, Cd, Cr and Ni were significantly different among regions(p<0.05). Correlation between rainfall pH and soil properties were positive in soil $pH(r=0.7826^{**})$, Ca$(r=0.6278^*)$, Mg$(r=0.5841^*)$, CEC$(r=0.6341^{**})$ and Cd$(r=0.5995^*)$, and were negative in Pb$(r=-0.5283^*)$. Correlation between $SO_2$ concentration and soil properties was negative in soil pH$(r=-0.6796^{**})$, Ca$(r=-0.5810^*)$, Mg$(r=-0.5522^*)$) and CEC$(r=-0.5905^*)$. Correlation between $NO_2$ concentration and soil properties were positive in organic matter $(r=0.6208^*)$, K$(r=0.5380^*)$. It was predicted that rainfall and $SO_2$ concentration would affect soil acidification, and soil heavy metal content related Cd and Pb. Others soil heavy metal were not related.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of warming and precipitation manipulation on seasonal changes in fine root production (FRP) and fine root mortality (FRM) of 33-month-old Pinus densiflora seedlings for two years. The seedlings in warmed plots were warmed with $3.0^{\circ}C$ higher using infrared heaters. The air temperature of warmed (TW) plots was set to increase by $3^{\circ}C$ compared to temperature control (TC) plots, and the three precipitation manipulation consisted of precipitation decrease (-30%; PD), precipitation increase (+30%; PI) and precipitation control (0%; PC). FRP ($mm\;mm^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) was significantly altered by only precipitation manipulation (PC: 3.57, PD: 4.59, PI: 3.02), while warming had no significant effect on the FRP and FRM. Meanwhile, interactions between warming and precipitation manipulation and seasonal changes had no significant effects on FRP and FRM. However, the influences of seasonal changes in soil temperature and soil moisture on FRP and FRM were different according to warming. In TW plots, FRP showed a positive relationship with soil temperature, and FRM showed a negative relationship with soil moisture. On the other hand, in the TC plots, FRP showed a positive relationship with soil moisture, and there were no relationships between FRM and soil temperature and moisture. These results indicate that the climate factors that affect FRP and FRM might vary as the warming progresses.

  • This study was conducted to investigate sensitivity of tree seedlings to $SO_2$. Visible injury symptoms and changes of ethylene production were investigated in tree seedlings with the fumigation of $SO_2$ in gas chamber 4 hours a day for six days. The symptoms of visible injury did not appear below 0.5ppm level of $SO_2$ exposure but a change of visible injury with the passage of time appeared at 1.5 and 2.5ppm in all seedlings. With the higher the concentration and/or the longer exposure of $SO_2$ the visible injury symptoms on leaves increased in all seedlings. The sensitivity of seedlings to $SO_2$ was the highest in Liriodendron tulipifera followed by Pinus strobus, Ginkgo biloba, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis. The amount of ethylene production was more at 1.5 and 2.5ppm of $SO_2$ exposure than at 0.5ppm and the peak time of it came faster at higher levels. The amount of ethylene production was significantly different among tree seedlings. It showed a higher at production of ethylene in Liriodendron tulipifera compared to Ginkgo biloba and the ethylene production of Pinus trees to $SO_2$ were the highest in Pinus strobus followed by Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis. In needle of Pinus strobus the ethylene production increased with the increasing rate of visible injury until the injury rate of 40-50% and than decreased with the increasing rate of visible injury since the rate of 50%.

  • This study was conducted to investigate nutrient dynamics and water quantity of throughfall and stemflow in natural oak stands in Korea. The ratio of the total throughfnll and stemflow to the amount of precipitation varied with locations. It was considered that the ratio was affected not only by the characteristics of tree species but also by regional, weather and other environmental conditions. It was, therefore, necessary to set up a water control system to launch a tending project for natural oak stands. Comparisons of nutrient amount in throughfall among regions reflected regional characteristics. $Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}$ and $K^+$ ions were leached from the canopy and yellow sand accumulation. $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ were marine-borne. $NO_3^-$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ resulted from dry deposition of air pollutants. Nutrient amount in the stemflow was as low as about 10% of that in the total throughfall and stemflow. The pH of stemflow in natural oak stands in urban areas ranged from 3 to 5. Influx of the acidic stemflow to soil could, in the long term, affect pH in soil solution and nutrient dynamics around root zones.

  • This study was carried out to estimate monthly mean of daily maximum and minimum temperature across North Korea at a 30 m grid spacing for a climatological normal year (1971-2000) and the 4 decadal averages (1971-1980, 1981-1990, 1991-2000, and 2001-2010). A geospatial climate interpolation method, which has been successfully used to produce the so-called 'High-Definition Digital Climate Maps' (HD-DCM), was used in conjunction with the 27 North Korean and 17 South Korean synoptic data. Correction modules including local effects of cold air drainage, thermal belt, ocean, solar irradiance and urban heat island were applied to adjust the synoptic temperature data in addition to the lapse rate correction. According to the final temperature estimates for a normal year, North Korean winter is expected colder than South Korean winter by $7^{\circ}C$ in average, while the spatial mean summer temperature is lower by $3^{\circ}C$ than that for South Korea. Warming trend in North Korea for the recent 40 years (1971-2010) was most remarkable in spring and fall, showing a 7.4% increase in the land area with 15 or higher daily maximum temperature for April.

  • In this study, the installation effects of a windbreak net on reducing wind speed were examined using meteorological observation data. Three automatic weather systems (AWS) were installed at the inside of the windbreak net of an apple orchard along the distance, and one AWS was located at the outside. They were set up on Oct. $25^{th}$, 2012 at the apple orchard of Geochang County, and meteorological data, which were observed at four stations for about 1 year from October 26, 2012 through October 21, 2013, were used for this study. Meteorological variables include air temperature & relative humidity at a height of 1.5 meter, and wind speed & wind direction at a height of 2 meter and 4 meter. These variables were measured and recorded every 60 seconds. The preliminary results of this study was as follows: (1) Daily mean temperature at the inside of the windbreak net was lower than that of the outside by 0.1 through $0.2^{\circ}C$. (2) Daily mean relative humidity at the inside of the windbreak net was higher than that of the outside by 0.7 through 1.7%. (3) As compared to the outside, northerly daily maximum wind speed of the inside of the windbreak net at a height of 2 and 4 meter was reduced by 0.7~1.5 $ms^{-1}$ (30.4~65.2%) and 0.3~0.7 $ms^{-1}$ (10.3~24.1%), respectively.

  • Playground is frequently used for physical and sports activity by students as well as by common people, which is constructed with various cover materials on the ground. This research surveyed the surface temperature in Kyungpook National University Sangju campus playground which is covered with various cover materials [bare field, zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica) turf field, urethane track, concrete field, epoxy field and artificial turf field] in Sangju, Gyeongsangbukdo, Korea. Temperature was measured 4 times per day at 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00 from May to October 2014 in surface and 1 m height above the ground. Surface temperature was different, depending on cover materials and survey time. Bare field and zoysiagrass turf field was lower surface temperature than other sites. Higher surface temperature site was different depending on survey time. Urethane track and artificial turf field was hotter than other sites at 12 and 15 hours, however concrete and epoxy field was hot at 18 hours. One meter above ground temperature was the highest in artificial turf field except at 18 hours. So natural turf, zoysiagrass playground will increase the athletic performance by reduce the surface and above ground temperature.
