  • The purpose of this study is to investigate domestic and foreign fashion sock design trends and suggest a proposal for competitive fashion sock design developments. The methods of this study are undertaken by literature review and design trend analysis. For the design trend analysis, in the case of domestic cases, 209 pictures from 7 brands, and in the case of foreign cases, 870 pictures from 10 brands are being chosen. In terms of analysis criteria, the colors, patterns, lengths and images of both the domestic and foreign socks are being compared. As a result, among the fashion foreign socks, more than 4 colors are the most common, and dark & dark grayish, strong & deep color tones are the most popular. Also, the stylized, geometrical patterns, and casual, cute and unique images are generally used. In the case of domestic fashion socks, 2 colors are the most common with vivid, strong & deep color tones as the most popular. Furthermore the patterns are limited to geometric patterns, and the images of socks are inclined to be too casual. To enhance the competitiveness of Korean sock designs, the variety of patterns and images are essential.

  • Recently there has been a trend of hiring more foreign labors in the Korean construction sites after the introduction of the government policy for foreign workers since 2007, called Employment Permit System(EPS). With the trend in the sites, the skilled and unskilled foreign workers would have become a main resource in the construction site workforce. This study aims to analyzing the effectiveness and the reality of working status for the foreign workforce. In doing so, both mail questionnaire survey and face to face interview with site managers and foreign labors in 38 apartment construction sites around Seoul region have been performed. The results of survey has been compared to the former research, which has been done for foreign labors hired under the old government policy, called Industrial Trainee System. This study found that there still exist many problems in reality of utilizing foreign workers in the sites, and proposed various recommendations for the effective use of foreign labors in the Korean construction industry.

  • With the globalization trend in S&T activities, Korean research organizations have begun to utilize foreign researchers. The performance of foreign researchers is generally regarded satisfactory, but there are many problems too. Moreover, there has not been any research carried out even though there is a growing need for the management of foreign researchers. This paper identified the performance / motivation factors of foreign researchers in Korean research organizations. The statistical results show that the efforts and research capabilities are the most important variables for performance of foreign researchers in Korean research organization. In addition, it is found out that university shows higher performance than government research institute and corporate research organization while it pays the least to the foreign researchers. It is interesting to see that the level of monetary payment is not strongly related with the performance of foreign researchers. In order to utilize the full potential of foreign researchers, it is necessary to enhance the living infrastructure. In addition, due attention should be given to the managerial capabilities of R&D administrators and evaluation/incentive systems of foreign researchers in Korean research organizations.

  • This study introduced the inclusion of Global Value Chain (GVC) as a strategy for the globalization of domestic industries. In addition, this study intended to highlight direct foreign investment as an important opportunity for enhancing the competitiveness of the domestic small and medium firms. That is, globalization could be realized not only through simple capital inflow, but also through domestic industry's participation in the overseas production network. The analysis of the trend and pattern of direct foreign investment revealed that the FDI inflows heavily dependent on the USA and Japan have been diversified steadily over time. In spite of recent decline trend of overall FDI amount, inflows from European countries in machinery and chemical industries have been rising. These rising and diversifying trends in these industries are promising since FDI inflows have the potential of playing an important role in achieving productivity growth of domestic industries, particularly in the area of comparatively fragile industries such as machinery and chemicals. In the same logic, it is crucial for future growth of Korea that the small and medium firms find their competitive edges through strengthening production networks with foreign multi-national companies. Thus, it is suggested that the policy of globalization of small and medium firms should be based on the firm understanding of GVC and FDI pattern of industries.

  • The primary goal of this paper is to explore the microeconomic foundation of Korean firms' adoption of foreign technologies. The paper also reviews the overall trend of international technology transfers to Korea. The period covered in this paper is Korea's high growth era, from the 1960s to the 1990s. The works of this paper center on the two questions of what characterizes foreign technologies which had been imported through licensing contracts, and which driving forces expedite technology adoption by firms. The Korean experience provides the context of success in the catch-up growth. The co-movement of technology imports with capital goods imports manifests Korea's effort to improve the technical efficiency toward the world frontier. Underlying this trend are firms' decisions to adopt new technologies. The paper shows that firms respond proactively to wage increases by adopting newer technologies and thus, in turn, increasing employment, which implies the existence of a virtuous interactive mechanism among these factors.

  • Background: Carcinoma of the esophagus is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The most common subtype is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In the past three decades, the incidence of SCC has been reported to be decreasing whereas esophageal adenocarcinoma (AC) is increasing. This study assessed the trend of esophageal cancer in Brunei Darussalam over a three decades period. Materials and Methods: The National Cancer registry was searched for esophageal cancers from 1986 to 2012. Data on age, gender, racial groups (Malays, Chinese, Indigenous and foreign nationals) and histology type were collected. The rate (ASR) and Age Specific Incidence rate (ASIR) were calculated. Results: The predominant tumor type was SCC which accounted for 89% of all esophageal cancer. The gender ratio was 2.25: 1 (male: female) and the mean age at diagnosis was $66.9{\pm}12.9$ years, significantly younger for esophageal AC ($57.2{\pm}16.0$) compared to SCC ($68.1{\pm}12.0$, p<0.05), and among the foreign nationals (p<0.05 for trend). The proportions of SCC among all esophageal cancers in the various racial groups were: Malays (87.8%), Chinese (100%), Indigenous (100%) and foreign nationals (20%). None of the Chinese and Indigenous groups were diagnosed with esophageal AC. The overall ASR for esophageal cancer was 2.1/100,000; 2.0/100,000 for SCC with a declining trend and 0.17/100,000 for esophageal AC, without any trend observed. Among the two major racial groups; the Chinese has higher ASR (3.42/100,000) compared to the Malays (ASR 0.95/100,000). Conclusions: SCC is the predominant tumor type of esophageal cancer in Brunei Darussalam and more common among the Chinese. There was a declining trend in the incidence of SCC but not for esophageal AC.
