A capillary action-induced tension develops in the tear layer between the contact lens and cornea, which leads to the restoring force due to difference in the layer thickness between either upper and lower or left and right side of the lens when it is displaced off the equilibrium position as a result of blinking. Suppose the lens was displaced a certain distance from the equilibrium position, lens starts to oscillate toward the equilibrium position with the decreasing amplitude due to the restoring force as well as the velocity dependent viscous damping force in the tear layer. A mathematical model which consists of the differential equations and their numerical solution was proposed to analyze the damped oscillations of lenses. The model predicts the time dependence of lenses after the blink varying the various parameters such as Be, diameters, masses and positions displaced from equilibrium. As the Be and mass of lens increases the rate of amplitude reduction decreases, which requires a more time for the lens to return to the equilibrium position. It seems that varying the lens' displacement and diameters affect the lens' motion very little.
The article presents a theoretical-experimental approach developed for modeling the coefficient of sliding friction in the dynamic system tool-workpiece in slide diamond burnishing of low-alloy unhardened steels. The experimental setup, implemented on conventional lathe, includes a specially designed device, with a straight cantilever beam as body. The beam is simultaneously loaded by bending (from transverse slide friction force) and compression (from longitudinal burnishing force), which is a reason for geometrical nonlinearity. A method, based on the idea of separation of the variables (time and metric) before establishing the differential equation of motion, has been applied for dynamic modeling of the beam elastic curve. Between the longitudinal (burnishing force) and transverse (slide friction force) forces exists a correlation defined by Coulomb's law of sliding friction. On this basis, an analytical relationship between the beam deflection and the sought friction coefficient has been obtained. In order to measure the deflection of the beam, strain gauges connected in a "full bridge" type of circuit are used. A flexible adhesive is selected, which provides an opportunity for dynamic measurements through the constructed measuring system. The signal is proportional to the beam deflection and is fed to the analog input of USB DAQ board, from where the signal enters in a purposely created virtual instrument which is developed by means of Labview. The basic characteristic of the virtual instrument is the ability to record and visualize in a real time the measured deflection. The signal sampling frequency is chosen in accordance with Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. In order to obtain a regression model of the friction coefficient with the participation of the diamond burnishing process parameters, an experimental design with 55 experimental points is synthesized. A regression analysis and analysis of variance have been carried out. The influence of the factors on the friction coefficient is established using sections of the hyper-surface of the friction coefficient model with the hyper-planes.

in this paper a dolphin-fender moored pontoon-type floating structure in shallow water depth is studied focusing on mooring force. The pontoon-type floating structure is 500m long, 300m wide. The structure has partially non-uniform drafts of 2.0m and 3.0m. The employed mooring system is a guyed frame type dolphin-fender system. The 1/125 scale model fender system is made of rubber tube to have hi-linear load deflection characteristics. A series of model tests has been conducted focusing on motion and fender force responses in regular and irregular waves at KRISO's ocean engineering basin Non-linear numerical simulation of fender reaction force has been carried out and the results are compared with those of model tests. The simulated rigid body motion and mooring forces also have been compared with the test results.

This study derives load characteristics and analyzes the safety of plowshares operating in dry fields. We mounted a three-blade, reversible plow on a 23.7 kW tractor and measured the plow's tractive force as well as the torque from the engine output shaft on the rear axle under various working speeds (L4, M1, M2, M3). We chose a Korean test site of Seomyeon, Chuncheon with sandy soil texture, as determined using the USDA method. We constructed the load spectrum for torque and tractive force using measured data and derived the fatigue life of the plowshare from a stress-cycle (S-N) curve of the plow material. Our results show that the M3 gear maximizes the driving shaft torque loads and, applying the tractive force load spectrum, creates a cumulative damage sum of $4.14{\times}10^{-5}$. Considering sampling time, we estimate a fatigue life of 805 hours while using the M3 gear. When using the other working speeds, however, all of the stress levels fell within the endurance limits and, therefore, our model predicts infinite plowshare lifetimes. For this analysis, we used a yield strength of 1,079 MPa for the plowshare and static safety factors, analyzed using the maximum stress, between 6.83 and 8.63 under each working speed.
Simulation of 3 dimensional large irregularly shaped stamping process by a dynamic approach, based on an explicit time integration scheme, has been shown to be highly efficient and robust in comparison to traditional, implicit, quasi-static ones. The objective of the work is to evaluate the results from explicit code in application to deep drawing of rectangular cup and stamping of automotive front fender, in which deformation, force, thickness distribution are calculated. The method of predicting spring back and formability by and explicit code are suggested and applied to the processes.

Machining accuracy is closely related with tool deflection induced by cutting forces. In this research, cutting forces and tool deflection in end milling are expressed as a closed form of tool rotational angle and cutting conditions. The discrete cutting fores caused by periodic tool entry and exit are represented as a continuous function using the Fourier series expansion. Tool deflection is predicted by direct integration of the distributed loads on cutting edges. Cutting conditions, tool geometry, run-outs and the stiffness of tool clamping part are considered together far cutting forces and tool deflection estimation. Compared with numerical methods, the presented method has advantages in prediction time reduction and the effects of feeding and run-outs on cutting forces and tool deflection can be analyzed quantitatively. This research can be effectively used in real time machining error estimation and cutting condition selection for error minimization since the form accuracy is easily predicted from tool deflection curve.

An analytical method to predict the flexural behavior of composite girder is presented in which the early-age properties of concrete are specified including maturing of elastic modulus, creep and shrinkage. The time dependent constitutive relation accounting for the early-age concrete properties is derived in an incremental format by expanding the total form of stress-strain relation by the first order Taylor series with respect to the reference time. The sectional analysis calculates the axial and curvature strains based on the force and moment equilibriums. The deflection curve of the box girder approximated by the quadratic polynomial function is calculated by applying to the proper boundary conditions in the consecutive segments. Numerical applications are made for the 3-span double composite steel box girders which is a composite bridge girder filled with concrete at the bottom of the steel box in the negative moment region. The one dimensional finite element analysis results are compared with those of the three dimensional finite element analysis and the analytical method based on the sectional analysis. Close agreement is observed among the three methods.

Cutting forces and tool deflection in end milling are represented as the closed form of tool rotational angle and cutting conditions. The discrete cutting forces caused by tool entry and exit are continued using the Fourier series expansion. Tool deflection is predicted by direct integration of the distributed loads on cutting edges. Cutting conditions, tool geometry, run-outs and the stiffness of tool clamping pan are considered for cutting forces and tool deflection estimation. Compared to numerical methods, the presented method has advantages in short prediction time and the effects of feeding and run-outs on cutting forces and tool deflection can be analyzed quantitatively. This research can be effectively used in real time machining error estimation and cutting condition selection for error minimization since the ferm accuracy is easily predicted by tool deflect ion curve.
An objective method for the evaluation of eating quality of cooked noodle was established by using a specially designed shear extrusion cell of Rheometer. From the force-distance curve, the maximum force, initial force, extrusion work, and the slope were determined. In a test with Korean dried noodles made from 17 types of Australian wheat flour, the maximum and initial forces and extrusion work could represent the firm-soft and chewy character, which govern mostly the preference of cooked noodle. On the other hand, the slope could distinguish the textural changes of cooked noodle during the storage after cooking. The parameters showed significant correlation with the protein content, water absorption, development time and extensibility of flour, but no correlation was obtained with the maximum viscosity of viscogram. For the estimation of textural preference, the correlation coefficient obtained from a multiple regression analysis using the maximum viscosity of viscogram and the maximum force of shear extrusion test as the two independent variables was not significantly higher than the coefficient obtained from a simple regression with the maximum force only.
For the quantitative analysis of an unknown sample a calibration curve should be obtained, as analytical instruments give relative, rather than absolute measurements. Therefore, researchers should make standard samples with various known concentrations, measure each standard and the unknown sample, and then determine the concentration of the unknown by comparing the measured value to those of the standards. These procedures are tedious and time-consuming. Therefore, we developed a polymer based microfluidic device from polydimethylsiloxane, which integrates serial dilution and capillary electrophoresis functions in a single device. The integrated microchip can provide a one-step analytical tool, and thus replace the complex experimental procedures. Two plastic syringes, one containing a buffer solution and the other a standard solution, were connected to two inlet holes on a microchip, and pushed by a hydrodynamic force. The standard sample is serially diluted to various concentrations through the microfluidic networks. The diluted samples are sequentially introduced through microchannels by electro-osmotic force, and their laser-induced fluorescence signals measured by capillary electrophoresis. We demonstrate the integrated microchip performance by measuring the fluorescence signals of fluorescein at various concentrations. The calibration curve obtained from the electropherograms showed the expected linearity.
