  • This study aims to present a more reasonable control value than the exiting one by comparing and analyzing control values and field instrumentation values of the whole excavation depth of the four case sites using geometric averaging as a statistical method. The range of the study is confined to three things: (1) the axial force of the braced excavation walls among a variety of items prescribed in the control values by stress deformation of walls and adjacent structures; (2) by approximation of the allowable and design value; (3) and by safety factor. As a res it is desirable to revise "(Long term allowable stress + Short term allowable stress)/2 ~ Short term allowable stress," presented in the present control values by stress deformation of walls and adjacent structures, to "(Long term allowable stress + Short term allowable stress)/5 ~ (Short term allowable stress)/3." The result also shows that since there is a difference of about 3.5%, it is not necessary to revise 70, 90, and 100 percent of LEVEL I, II, and III, prescribed in the control values by the allowable and design value approximation. In addition, modifying the control value by the safety factor, now 1.07, is unnecessary, although it varies little difference from the present value.

  • This study deals an estimation method of thrust measurement uncertainty in solid rocket motors. Guidelines of the force measurement uncertainty estimation have been provided by ISO, domestic and international organizations. However, all of them are described by focusing on the force calibration machines and force transducers with a conceptually-driven way. Thus the guidelines cannot be directly applicable to uncertainty estimation of calibration equation and its linear approximation, which are critical error sources in the thrust measurement. In this paper, the equations taking into account effects of both error sources are derived based on fundamental concepts of measurement uncertainty. These are applied to the real thrust measurement system where a relatively simple estimation method for the thrust measurement uncertainty is proposed.

  • The sag effect of long stay cables is one of the key factors restricting further increase in the span of cable-stayed bridges. Based on the formerly proposed concept of long stay cables lifted by an auxiliary suspension cable in cross-strait cable-stayed bridges, corresponding static approximate calculations and analytical theory based on catenary and parabolic cable configurations are established. Taking a main span 1400 m cable-stayed bridge as the research object, three typical lifting conditions and the whole process of auxiliary cable lifting are analyzed and discussed. The results show that the sag effect is effectively reduced. The support efficiency is only improved when the cables are lifted above the original cable chord. Reduction of the horizontal component force of the cable is limited. The equivalent elastic modulus and the vertical support stiffness of the lifted cables are significantly increased with increased horizontal projection length and not sensitive to the change of the lifting point position. The scheme of lifting the cable to the chord midpoint is more economical because of the less steel required for the auxiliary suspension cable, but its effect on improving the vertical support efficiency is limited. The support efficiency is better when the cable is lifted to the cable end tangential to the original cable chord, but the lifting force and the cross-sectional area of the auxiliary suspension cable are doubled. The approximate calculation results of the lifted cables are very close to the numerical analysis results, which verifies the applicability of the approximation method proposed in this study. The results of parabolic approximation calculations are approximately equal to that of catenary cable geometry. As the parabolic approximation analysis theory of lifted cables is more convenient in mathematical processing, it is feasible to use parabolic approximation analysis theory as the analytical method for the conceptual design of lifted cables of super-long span cable-stayed bridges.

  • This paper presents an approach of predicting the radiated noise due to the structural vibration by internal harmonic forces using the doubly asymptotic approximation (DAA). Acoustic transfer vector is derived from the Helmholtz integral equation and the fluid-structure interaction relation of DAA. Numerical results and analytical results of radiated noise for a cylindrical shell were compared and showed that they were consistent in most of frequencies and radiation directions, but showed errors in some radiated directions in the mid-frequency region. Despite these errors, the prediction method will be suitable for practical radiated noise prediction.

  • For a detailed investigation of the dynamic behaviour of slender bridges under wind action especially the motion-induced fluid forces should be available not only for harmonic motions but also for more general ones. If linear transfer behaviour is assumed, the force-displacement relation for almost arbitrary motions can be handled in the frequency domain using aerodynamic transfer functions. In aerospace engineering as well as in bridge engineering, these functions are usually approximated by special kinds of complex-valued rational functions which depend on complex frequencies. The quality of this approximation is evaluated for several bridge cross sections in this article. It is shown that rational functions are for some sections scarcely suitable to realistically represent the transfer behaviour of motion-induced aerodynamic forces for arbitrarily complex frequencies.

  • This paper came up with the theoretical modelling of the metrology for the acoustic power using ultrasonic radiation force and showed some theoretical results. In order to do this, a scattering model for a rigid circular cone based upon the Kirchhoff approximation was made, which was followed by the calculation of acoustic power, and then, was converted to the radiation force. From these works, it provided the accuracy and limitation of the conventional method using a circular cone, and the expanded metrology modelling that can be applied to a circular cone with arbitrary apex angle. Using these, this study provided the dependence of the metrology for the acoustic power using ultrasonic radiation force on the frequency and the size of the target. As a result, the correction was yielded in the value of the acoustic power calculated by the suggested International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) method, which needs to be added when the frequency and the size of the target was considered.

  • The optical force on a perfectly reflecting sphere in a ray-optics regime is considered. With the assumption of geometric optics and a sphere smaller than the minimum waist of the illuminating beam, closed-form analytic expressions of the optical force are derived. Both axial and radial forces are expressed by a modified Bessel function of the first kind. The derived analytic expressions are compared to precise numerical computations of the exact optical force equations derived previously. In addition the error due to the small sphere assumption is estimated analytically.

  • Approximation of a Cartesian straight line motion with linear interpolation in the joint space has many desirable advantages and applications. But inappropriate determination of the corresponding subtravelling and transition times makes such joint-trajectories violate the input torque/force constraints. An approach that can overcome this difficult and yield the joint trajectories utilizing the allowable maximum input torque/force is established in this paper. The effectiveness of these results is demonstrated by using a three-joint revolute manipulator.

  • Structural optimization has been developed by two methods. One is the direct method which applies the Nonlinear Programming (NLP) algorithm directly to the structural optimization problem. This method is known to be very excellent mathematically. However, it is very expensive for large-scale problems due to the one-dimensional line search. The other method is the approximation method which utilizes the engineering senses very well. The original problem is approximated to a simple problem and an NLP algorithm is adopted for solving the approximated problems. Practical solutions are obtained with low cost by this method. The two methods are compared through standard structural optimization problems. The Finite element method with truss and beam elements is used for the structural and sensitivity analyses. The results are analyzed based on the convergence performances, the number is function calculations, the quality of the cost functions, and etc. The applications of both methods are also discussed.

  • A hierarchical representation scheme for planar curves, MBO-tree, is proposed in this paper, which provides natural approximation and efficient localization. MBO-tree is based on the Douglas-Peucker algorithm (iterative end-point fit algorithm), but approximation errors that are stored with corresponding points in MBO-tree nodes and are used for abstraction measures are adjusted by force to eliminate unnatural approximation. The error adjusting is just making the approximation error of a node in a MBO-tree to be less than or equal to that of its parent. In point of localization, the bounding area of a curve is represented with a minimum bounding octangle (MBO), which can enclose the curve more compactly compared with those of other hierarchical schemes, such as the strip tree, the arc tree and the HAL tree. The MBO satisfies the hierarchical inclusion property that is useful for hierarchical geometrical operations, such as the point-inclusion test and the polygon intersection test. Through several experiments, we found that the proposed scheme was able to approximate more naturally and to localize more effectively.
