  • In recent years. attention has focused on the application of the alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE or Comet) assay in environmental mutagenesis. To evaluate the suitability of the assay as a monitoring. technique, the DNA damages in liver cells and erythrocytes of carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to benzo[${\alpha}$]pyrene (B[${\alpha}$]P) were estimated comparatively with the in vivo Comet assay and the micronucleus test (MNT).(omitted)

  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental contaminants that elicit a broad spectrum of toxic effects in mammals and other vertebrate species. Because of their lipophilicity, chemical stability and resistance to biodegradation, PCBs tend to accumulate in the human body via food chain and environmental matrices including human adipose tissues, blood and milk.(omitted)

  • Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous element found in several forms in foods and environmental media, such as soil, air, and water. The primary route of human exposure is through ingestion of arsenic-contaminated food and drinking water. The predominant form of arsenic in drinking water is inorganic arsenic, which is both highly toxic and readily bioavailable.(omitted)

  • It is widely accepted that free-radical induced oxidative damages are involved in pathogenic processes of major diseases including cancer, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. A number of epidemiological studies have indicated that frequent consumptions of plant foods rich in antioxidants reduce the risk of developing cancer and cardiovascular diseases, while many intervention trials have failed to prove the protective role of major dietary antioxidants.(omitted)

  • A wide array of natural products have been identified to possess potenital cancer chemopreventive properties. Of particular interest is Polyporus umbellatus frs.. that exhibits antimutagenic and cytotoxic effects. The crud drug "chorei" prepared from the dried fruit body of Polyporus umbellatus is used for kidney and other such disease. In the study, we are isolating the minor components of Chorei and examined their antimutagenic and cytotoxic effects.(omitted)

  • Doenjang (Korean fermented soybean paste) is one of important fermented foods in Korea. Doenjang has been traditionally manufactured from meju which is fermented rectangular shape of crushed cooked soybeans. The main microorganisms involved for meju fermentation are Bacillus subtilis and molds such as Rizopus sp., Mucor sp. and Aspergillus sp. We have already reported that Doenjang is free from mycotoxin, especially, aflatoxin B$_1$contamination during the manufacturing process of the Deonjang.(omitted)

  • Cytochrome P-450 3A4 (CYP3A4) is major enzyme in human liver, the role of this is detoxification and metabolizing more than 50% clinical drugs in use. The transcription of CYP3A4 is regulated by the Pregnenolone X receptor (PXR),of which human form is Steroid and Xenobiotics receptor (SXR).(omitted)

  • Xylazine has been used as tranquilizer for food producing animals. The concentration of xylazine and its metabolites in major organs are determined for the safety of meat. Xylazine was eliminated very rapidly as reported and not detected after 10 hrs in organs. However p-hydroxy-xylazine, a main metabolite of xylazine in urine, was detected in liver in the concentration of 0.37-2.58 mg/g tissue to 48 hrs. 2, 6-Dimethylisothiocyanate, another metabolite of xylazine and a possible toxicant, was detected in low concentration to 2 hrs in liver, kidney and muscle.
