  • The mutagenic activity of four phenothiazine derivatives such as chlorpromazine, perphenazine, trifluoperazine and thioridazine in conjunction with UV-A irradiation or not based on the Ames plate incorporation test in the presence and absence of liver microsomal enzyme(S9 fraction). None of these compounds and their photo-excited were detected as mutagen in the Salmonella microsome assay with TA 98 and TA 100.

  • Hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and liver cancer caused by viral infection are among the most prevalent causes of death in Korea. Several medicines have been in use despite their nonsatisfactory effects on these disease. Some herbal medicines put to use recently have not shown beneficial effects, either. This paper evaluates the effects of extracts from 10 traditional Korean herbal medicines on rats with hepatic damage induced by galactosamine. Rubus coreanus showed an anti-inflammatory effect as shown on the data of activities of serum transaminases.

  • It is generally thought that continuous oxidative damage to DNA is a major contributor to the risk of cancer development. Epidemiological studies suggest that fruits and vegetables might reduce the risk of cancer through their antioxidant properties. This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of fruits and fruit juice consumption against the oxidative DNA damage in lymphocytes of healthy subjects. (omitted)

  • To evaluate possible teratogenicity of food additives such as sodium propionate and monosodium glutamate, 300 haching eggs were subjected to potential mutagenicity assay by administration of low and high doses of the materials via york and air sac. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Mortality rate of chick embryo was increased significantly by dosage related in the group of sodium propiorate and monosodium glutamate when compared to placebo and non-treated group. 2. Frequency of embryo with malformation in treated group was not increased significantly when compared to placebo and non-treated group.

  • The dioxin- or aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a member of the Per-Arnt-Sim family of nuclear transcription factors exhibiting a basic helix-loop-helix structure. In its non-ligated state the AhR is associated with hsp 90 and the immunophilin-type XAP2. Upon ligand binding the associated proteins are released, the receptor dimerizes with the AhR nuclear trans locator protein Arnt, and binds to XREs (xenobiotic-responsive elements) in the 5'-flanking region of responsive genes thus modulating their transcription.(omitted)

  • Air pollution is made up by complex mixture exhausted from cars, industries and incinerators etc. Those pollutants come from everywhere without border and contain phototoxic and photogenotoxic chemicals including PAHs exhausted in the air. We have published that the chemicals which show phototoxicity and photogenotoxicity are closely related in mechanistic and the PAHs react as a strong photocatalyzer by radical productions under UV exposure.(omitted)

  • Antioxidative potentials of estrogen and genistein were compared by measuring the degree of protection against plasmid DNA strand breakage induced by peroxyl free radicals using the DNA strand scission assay with pBR322 DNA. Genistein decreased DNA strand breakage by AAPH radical treatment at the all of three concentrations tested (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) with the range of 89.5% to 99.6%.(omitted)

  • The trichothecenes are a chemically related sesquiterpenoid fungal metabolites of Fusarium, Trichoderma, Stachybotrys and others, and at moment more than 70 kinds of derivatives are identified. Historically, they are identified as antifungal and phytotoxic compounds, but after the finding of T-2 toxin from Fusarium tricinctum, several trichothecenes are now considered to be natural toxicants in foodstuffs and feeds.
