This study examined the factors related to drinking, health, and food habits of college students before and after participating in the activities of temperance club. The survey was conducted on 97 college students who participated in the temperance club. Scores on 'daily amount of alcohol drinking(p<.05)' and 'drinking expenditure(p<.05)' were significantly lower after temperance club participation. Drinking knowledge(p<.05), and health-related factors including 'concerns about health(p<.05)', 'health condition(p<.05)', and 'times of exercise(p<.05)' were significantly higher after temperance club participation. Food habits score was significantly higher after temperance club participation(m=46.0 vs. m=48.8, p<.01). The scores on 'I have three meals a day(p<.01)', 'I don't eat junk foods often(p<.05)', and 'I don't eat out often(p<.05)' were significantly higher after temperance club participation. Particiating in temperance club activities improved the factors related to drinking, health, and food habits. Therefore, we would like to provide the results of this study as basic data for creating a healthy drinking culture.
This study set out to investigate the effects of 16-week nutrition education and exercise intervention run by a public health center on the physical activities and dietary patterns of obese children at the before, after, and after one month point. After the program, the obese index of the obese children dropped by 5.9% from 38.4% to 32.5%. One month after the end of the program, their obese index increased by 1.4% to 33.9% (p < 0.001). The obese children's hours of walking of physical activities increased to 2.6 hours from 1.2 hours after the program and remained at the 2.6 hours range one month after the end of the program (p < 0.01). The total scores of their food habits increased to 10.4 points from 9.1 points after the program and 10.3 points one month after the end of the program with significant differences (p < 0.01). The total scores of their eating behavior made a significant increase to 6.5 points from 5.3 points after the program and then dropped to 5.9 points one month after the end of the program (p < 0.05). As for changes to their dietary pattern scores according to the obese index, only the food habits scores showed significant main effects of term (p < 0.05). According to these results, there is still a need to develop proper programs to help them increase regular exercise, improve their physical activities by cutting down time with TV, computer, Internet, and video games, and enhance their nutritional knowledge and to provide them with ongoing management and guidance until the improved food habits and eating behavior become part of their habits.

This study was conducted to compare eating habits and food preferences of Korean and Japanese female college students in some areas of the two countries. The subjects were 365 Korean students and 313 Japanese students. The survey was done in every May for three years from 2006 to 2008. Eating habits and food preferences were investigated by questionnaire. The results were as follows. There was no significant difference in body weight, but Korean students were taller and they ate out more frequently than Japanese students. Both Korean students and Japanese students liked meat, milk and milk products better than fishes. Also, they liked fruits better than vegetables. Korean students had lower preferences for fish, beans and bean products, vegetables, and seaweed than Japanese students. In conclusion, Korean students seem to be exposed to risk factors to health more than Japanese students, because they had less desirable eating habits and food preferences, and were less active than Japanese students. Therefore Korean students might need to change their eating habits and food preferences into more desirable ones for their good health.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of mothers' attitudes on preparing baby foods for their children's food habits and development. The subjects were allocated to 419 preschool children, aged 3 - 5 years. This study surveyed by questionnaire, which was answered by the children's mothers. Subjects were classified by two groups, active and passive, based on their mothers' weaning attitudes. In the active group, mothers tried to make a variety of foods for preparing the baby foods, whereas mothers in the passive group didn't try to make it too much. Family income was higher in the active group and the subject' mothers had more jobs than those in the passive group, whereas their parent's education levels showed no differences. According to Rohrer index, 2.6% of subjects were obese in the active group, whereas 7.7% in the passive group. These data were shown significantly different between the groups. There were no differences in mother's food habits and breast-feeding versus formula feeding between the two groups. However, children's food habits were shown statistically different between the two groups. Higher regularity of meals, higher frequencies of snacks at home, higher frequencies of fruit, com, sweet potato as a snacks and less instant foods were revealed in the active group more than in the passive group. The major problem of children's food habits was an unbalanced diet (52.7%) and the major reasons for unbalanced diet were the taste (58.7%) and the texture (23.2%). The active uoup used more fruits and vegetables than the passive group. Also there were significant differences to solve problems of children's unbalanced diets. In the positive group, 14.4% of mothers tried to develop new cooking methods for solving the problem of an unbalanced diet, but 8.2% did in the passive group. furthermore, 2.3% of mothers in the positive group removed unpleasant items of the food, whereas 6.9% did in the passive. The average nutritional knowledge scores on a 10 scale were 7.2 and 6.9 in active and passive groups, respectively, and they were statistically different. Mothers among the active group explained the knowledge for food and nutrition to their children more than those in the passive group. These results suggest that mothers' attitudes for baby food are an important factor for forming their children's food habits. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a nutritional education program, materials and new recipes for a variety of baby foods to mothers.
Controlling dietary behaviors and health-related lifestyle habits is important to manage non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). If NIDDM is not treated properly, the prevalence of macro-vascular complications (MC) may increase. The goal of NIDDM therapy is to maintain normal concentrations of blood glucose and lipid profiles by having regular meals, controlling alcohol drinking, quitting smoking, and performing physical exercise regularly. This study was performed to investigate the dietary and health-related lifestyle habits and blood parameters of NIDDM patients of both genders and compared these characteristics between the patients with and without MC. Our results show that the subjects with MC compared to without MC and the female patients than the males controlled their diets more regularly, tended to regulate the number of meals better, and smoke less than those without MC. Although plasma lipid profiles were not significantly different between the genders and between the subjects with and without MC, the men had higher blood glucose and plasma tHcy concentrations than the women and plasma tHcy concentration was higher in the female subjects without MC. These results imply that the male patients of NIDDM without MC might have more problems in maintaining their blood glucose. In addition, smoking may be the most important life-style factor influencing some blood parameters like blood glucose, HbAlc, and total cholesterol in the NIDDM patients.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary habits and concentrations of urinary phthalate metabolite in elementary school children. Methods: This study was conducted in Seoul, South Korea. We collected urine samples from 156 children from a single school in September 2016. Information on dietary habits was obtained from the parents of the children. Five types of urinary phthalate metabolites were analyzed using a high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometer. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the factors affecting the concentrations of urinary phthalate metabolite. Results: Girls had a significantly lower concentration of urinary mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP) (p=0.006) than did boys. When the consumption of bean processed food and wrapped delivery food were more than once a week, urinary MnBP (p=0.021) and monobenzyl phthalate (MBzP) (p=0.032) concentrations were the highest, respectively. Conclusion: Several urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations were associated with demographic and dietary habits. Particularly, urinary MnBP and MBzP were associated with several processed foods. The findings of this study might be useful as basic data for establishing and educating on environmental health policy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate eating habits and the frequency of trigger-food consumption in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and to examine the associations of these variables with IBS symptom severity. Methods: We included 145 ROME III-positive IBS patients (mean age 31.2 years, 73.8% of female). Subjects completed an eating-habits and food-consumption questionnaire, IBS-Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-SSS) and Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18) for psychological distress. Results: Subjects with unhealthy eating-habits such as irregular meal times, frequently eating out and overeating tended to show higher IBS symptom severity. The severity of IBS symptoms related to the frequency of the consumption of trigger foods. Subjects who ate trigger-foods (i.e., tofu, beans, almonds, and peanuts) less frequently showed higher IBS symptom severity (p=.045, .042, .016, and .019, respectively). However, subjects who ate spicy foods, instant foods, and noodles more frequently experienced more severe IBS symptoms (p=.018, .011, and .023 respectively). Conclusion: This study showed that IBS symptom severity was related to meal intake patterns and frequency of trigger food consumption. These findings could provide a basis for developing an intervention program for IBS patients.
This study was intended to investigate the breakfast habits of salaried people. Total 446 subjects (male:256 and female:190) living in Seoul participated in the study. The results obtained were as follows : About 88.8% of the respondents perceived well the importance of breakfast, but only 33.2% of them responded to have breakfast every morning. It was found that males, older people, married people and people with higher education had a tendency to have breakfast regularly. The main reasons for having breakfast were 'for nutritional intake'(42.2%) and 'for relieving hunger' (31.3%). Cooked rice with soup (78.4%) was the most popular menu for breakfast. The time for breakfast was about 5∼15 minutes. The reasons for skipping breakfast were 'the lack of time > low appetite > habitually', but 59.6% of the respondents answered to have cooked rice with soup if they would. The 95.6% of the respondents showed more than the 'moderate' score on nutritional knowledge. Female salaried people showed higher scores on nutritional knowledge than male counterparts. People with higher education had a better nutritional knowledge. It was found that male, older people, people with higher education, and members in the extended family or nuclear family had good eating habits. Nutritial knowledge showed a significant positive relationship with eating habits. Overall, salaried people perceived the importance of breakfast, but had Poor dietary habit of skipping breakfast at 23.3%. Therefore, convenient and nutritional substitute for breakfast should be developed for salaried people.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of green dietary life recognition and low-carbon green life practice on health-related dietary habits in high school students. The subjects were 367 high school students in the Incheon area. This cross-sectional survey was conducted using a questionnaire, and data were analyzed with the SPSS 20.0 program. According to the findings, green dietary life recognition were categorized into two sub-factors: 'Eco-friendly traditional dietary life', and 'Life of consideration and thanks'. Low-carbon green life practice was 'Low-carbon green life', and health-related dietary habits were categorized into four sub-factors: 'Vegetables-oriented traditional dietary habits', 'Balanced dietary habits', 'Life practice for health', and 'Various cereals intake'. Green dietary life recognition showed a significantly positive relationship with all sub-factors of health-related dietary habits (p<0.05), whereas 'Eco-friendly traditional dietary life' had no significant effect on 'Balanced dietary habits'. Low-carbon green life practice showed a significantly positive relationship with all sub-factors of health-related dietary habits (p<0.01). Students who received green growth education showed significantly higher health-related dietary habits than those who did not (p<0.01). Girls showed significantly higher green dietary life recognitions and low-carbon green life practice than boys (p<0.01). Therefore, more green dietary life and low-carbon green life education programs targeting students are need. Voluntary activities, along with green dietary life and low-carbon green life education will help students improve their health-related dietary habits.
The factors of obesity related with food habits were assessed to provide information for nutrition education database. The subjects in this study were 234 primary school children in Busan. Children were classified into normal and obese groups(mildly obese, moderately obese and severely obese) by obesity index. In self-recognition of body image, only 28.6% of MI group considered themselves as 'overweight or obese'. 87.2% of the subjects controlled their weight method with exercise. With regard to meal speed, 64.5% of the subjects ate $fast({\leq}15\;min.)$. The study also found that 79.8% of the subjects ate breakfast, 56.4% of the subjects them were moderate by obese, 40.8% of the subjects ate snacks after dinner. Eating speed, meal volume and snacks money per day were significantly different in obesity. Preference for eating out was Korean Chinese, Western and Japanese food, in order. Favorite food for snack, such as ddukbokki, fruits, milk. fried foods and candy and caramel were significantly different in obesity(p<0.05). However hamberger, pizza and chocolate were not significantly different in obesity. The most preference snack for all the subjects were fruits and ice cream. In food preference, potato, dduk, meats, fishes, cheese, milk, ice cream were significantly different in obesity. The distasteful food for subjects were patbab, vegetables, shellfishes and salt-fermented foods. From above results, obesity of children was related to meal speed, meal volume and snacks motley per day. Therefore, these results suggest that continuous and practical nutrition education to change food habits art necessary to avoid child obesity.
