  • Superconducting fault current(SFCLs) are expected to improve not only reliability but also stability of real power systems. The analysis on the single line-to-ground fault current of the integrated three phase flux-lock type SFCL, which consists of three flux-lock reactor wound on an iron core in each single phase and three YBCO thin films, was investigated in current limiting operating characteristics. We compared additive polarity winding with the subtractive one in the flux lock reactor. Its turns ratio each phase between the primary and the secondary coils is 63:42. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred in any phase, the peak value of line current in the fault phase of the additive polarity winding increased up to 31.44[A] during first-half cycle. On the other hand, the peak value in the subtractive polarity winding increased up to 81.77[A] under the same conditions. This is because the current flow between the primary and the secondary windings becomes to be additive or subtractive in each winding direction. We confirmed that the current limiting behavior in the additive polarity winding was more effective for a single-line-to ground fault.

  • We investigated the quench characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the number of the superconducting elements at the subtractive polarity winding of a transformer. The flux-lock type SFCL consists of the transformer with a primary winding and two secondary windings connected in parallel, and the superconducting element was connected with secondary winding in series, respectively. The applied voltage at that tin was 200V. when two superconducting elements of the secondary winding was connected in parallel, the peak lie current increased up to 99A, while that flowing in a superconducting element in conventional flux-lock type SFCL showed 50A under the same conditions, the impedance of secondary winding under the same situation showed the opposite behavior. This enabled the parallel structure to be easy to increase the capacity of power system, in the meantime, The quench between two superconducting elements in the SFCL with two secondary windings connected in parallel was achieved simultaneously. While the quench-starting point was slightly different in the SFCL with two superconducting elements connected in series. We found that the parallel connection between the secondary windings increased the power capacity and let quench characteristics improve through their mutual linkage.

  • The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) can quickly limit the fault current shortly after the short circuit occurs and recover the superconducting state after the fault removes and plays a role in compensating the voltage sag of the sound feeder adjacent to the fault feeder as well as the fault current limiting operation of the fault feeder. Especially, the flux-lock type SFCL with an isolated transformer, which consists of two parallel connected coils on an iron core and the isolated transformer connected in series with one of two coils, has different voltage sag compensating and current limiting characteristics due to the winding direction and the inductance ratio of two coils. The current limiting and the voltage sag compensating characteristics of a SFCL using a transformer winding were analyzed. Through the analysis on the short-circuit tests results considering the winding direction of two coils, the SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding has shown the higher limited fault current than the SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding. It could be confirmed that the higher fault current limitation of the SFCL could be contributed to the higher load voltage sag compensation.

  • The improved flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is composed of a series transformer and superconducting unit of the yttrium-barium-copper-oxide (YBCO) coated conductor. In this paper, we investigated current limiting characteristics through winding direction of coil 2 and variable number of coil 1 and coil 2 in improved flux-lock type SFCL. The better fault current characteristics and the burden of YBCO coated conductor can be confirmed from the experimental result in the higher turn ratio of coil 1 and coil 2 in the additive conditions. In case of subtractive condition, we can confirm a similar result in the same case of experimental conditions. but the burden of YBCO coated conductor has been increased from an increase in winding numbers of coil 2.

  • When the accident occurred in power distribution system, it needs to control efficiently the fault current according to the fault angle and location. The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) can quickly limit when the short circuit accidents occurred and be made the resistance after the fault current. The flux-lock type SFCL has a single triggering element, detects and limits the fault current at the same time regardless of the size of the fault current. However, it has a disadvantage that broken the superconductor element. If the flux-lock type SFCL has separated structure of the triggering element and the limiting element, when large fault current occurs, it can reduce the burden of power and control fault current to adjust impedance. In this paper, this system is composed by triggering element and limiting element to analyze operation of limiting current. When the fault current occurs, we analyzed the limiting and operating current characteristics of the two triggering current level, and the compensation characteristics of bus-voltage sag according to the fault angle and location.

  • Superconducting fault currents(SFCLs) are expected to improve not only reliability but also stability of power systems. The analysis on current limiting operations of the flux-lock type SFCL, which consists of a flux-lock reactor wound an iron core and a YBCO thin film, was compared the open-loop with the closed-loop iron core of the subtractive polarity winding. In the SFCL, operation characteristics could be controlled by adjusting the inductances and the winding directions of the coils, then magnetic field induced in the iron core. The current limiting characteristics under the same experimental conditions were generated regardless of the iron core conditions. We confirmed that capacity of the SFCL was increased effectively by the closed-loop iron core. However, the power burden of the system could be lowered by the open-loop iron core.

  • We investigated the characteristics of flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) by the fault cycles. Since the recovery characteristics of a superconducting element in the flux-lock type SFCL were dependent on the winding' direction between two coils, the analysis for the recovery characteristics of this type SFCL together with the current limiting characteristic is necessary to apply it to power system. As the fault cycles was increased from 1 cycle to 5 cycles, the initial limiting current ($I_{ini}$) and quench characteristic were mostly same. As the fault period increases, the recovery time of the superconducting element increases. The consumed energy and recovery characteristics in a superconducting element show the same tendency.

  • As one of methods to increase the voltage rating of the flux-lock type SFCL, the fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL with HTSC elements connected in series were analyzed. The initial fault current amplitudes in two SFCLs with the series connection of two HTSC elements and with single HTSC element were the same. In addition, the resistance amplitude of each HTSC element in SFCL with the series connection of two HTSC elements had the similar one in SFCL with single HTSC element. With increase of applying voltage, the unbalance of voltage between two HTSC elements in SFCL with the series connection of two HTSC elements disappeared.
