In this study, R-123 flow boiling experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of nanoparticle deposition on heater surfaces on flow critical heat flux (CHF) and boiling heat transfer. It is known that CHF enhancement by nanoparticles results from porous structures that are very similar to layers of Chalk River unidentified deposit formed on nuclear fuel rod surfaces during the reactor operation period. Although previous studies have investigated the surface effects through surface modifications, most studies are limited to pool boiling conditions, and therefore, the effects of porous surfaces on flow boiling heat transfer are still unclear. In addition, there have been only few reports on suppression of wetting for decoupled approaches of reasoning. In this study, bare and $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticle-coated surfaces were prepared for the study experiments. The CHF of each surface was measured with different mass fluxes of $1,600kg/m^2s$, $1,800kg/m^2s$, $2,100kg/m^2s$, $2,400kg/m^2s$, and $2,600kg/m^2s$. The nanoparticle-coated tube showed CHF enhancement up to 17% at a mass flux of $2,400kg/m^2s$ compared with the bare tube. The factors for CHF enhancement are related to the enhanced rewetting process derived from capillary action through porous structures built-up by nanoparticles while suppressing relative wettability effects between two sample surfaces as a highly wettable R-123 refrigerant was used as a working fluid.
In this paper, works related to enhancement of the CHF are reviewed in terms of fundamental mechanisms and practical applications. Studies on CHF enhancement in forced convection are divided into two categories, CHF enhancement of internal flow in tubes and enhancement of CHF in the nuclear fuel bundle. Methods of enhancing the CHF of internal flows in tubes include enhancement of the swirl flow using twisted tapes, a helical coil, and a grooved surface; promotion of flow mixing using a hypervapotron; altering the characteristics of the heated surface using porous coatings and nano-fluids; and changing the surface tension of the fluid using additives such as surfactants. In the fuel bundle, mixing vanes or wire wrapped rods can be employed to enhance the CHF by changing the flow distributions. These methods can be applied to practical heat exchange systems such as nuclear reactors, fossil boilers, fusion reactors, etc.
We have prepared karaya gum patches containing ketoprofen and investigated the effect of short-time current pretreatment of skin on the permeability. Hairless mouse skin was treated with current before the patch was mounted on the skin. The effect of current density and current duration on the flux of ketoprofen was studied. The possibility of additive effect with penetration enhancer (PGML) was also investigated. Iontophoretic pretreatment of skin increased the passive flux up to 3 folds at 0.4 $mA/cm^2$ current density, when the matrix contained no PGML. As the duration of current-pretreatment and current density increased, flux increased. PGML increased the average passive flux markedly, about 6 to 12 folds, depending on the concentration in the patch. Current pretreatment further increased the flux from this PGML containing patch, exhibiting additive effect. These results indicate that short-duration current pretreatment of skin can be an useful method for the enhancement of ketoprofen permeability through skin.
Direct immersion cooling has been considered as one of the promising methods to cool high power density chips. A fluorocarbon liquid such as FC-72, which is chemically and electrically compatible with microelectronic components, is known to be a proper coolant for direct immersion cooling. However, boiling in this dielectric fluid is characterized by its small value of the critical heat flux. In this experimental study, we tried to enhance the critical heat flux by increasing the nucleate boiling area in the heat spreader (Conductive Immersion Cooling Module). Heat nux of 2 MW/㎡ was successfully removed at the heat source temperature below 78$^{\circ}C$ in FC-72. Some modified boiling curves at high heat flux were obtained from these modules. Also, the concept of conduction path length is very important in enhancing the critical heat flux by increasing the heat spreader surface area where nucleate boiling occurs.
To enhance the performance of superconducting motor, the flux which links the stator windings needs to be increased as much as possible. In this paper we redistributed the field winding to increase the flux-linkage. This paper introduces an algorithm that modifies the rotor winding shape to increase the flux-linkage to stator winding, satisfying both the constant superconductor volume and HTS tape characteristic (I$_{c}$-B curve) constraints. To check the validness of the proposed algorithm, it was applied to the 100 Hp HTS motor model, and about 21 % increase of flux-linkage was confirmed depending on the initial winding shape.e.
This paper proposes an effective assistant model for considering the stator slot-opening effect on air gap flux density distribution in conventional interior-type permanent magnet (IPM) motor. Different from the conventional slot-opening effect analysis in surface-type PM (SPM) motor, a composite effect of slot-opening uniquely existing in IPM motor, which additionally causes enhancement of air gap flux density due to magnet flux path distortion in iron core between the buried PM and rotor surface. This phenomenon is represented by a proposed assistant model, which simply deals with this additional effect by modifying magnetic pole-arc using an effective method. The validity of this proposed analytical model is applied to predict the air gap flux density distribution in an IPM motor model and confirmed by finite element method (FEM).
Pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) of water-based nanofluids with alumina and titania nanoparticles of 0.01% by volume were investigated on a disk heater at saturated and atmospheric conditions. The experimental results showed that the boiling in nanofluids caused the considerable increase in CHF on the flat surface heater. It was revealed by visualization of the heater surface subsequent to the boiling experiments that a major amount of nanoparticles deposited on the surface during the boiling process. Pool boiling of pure water on the surface modified by such nanoparticle deposition resulted in the same CHF increases as what boiling nanofluids, thus suggesting the CHF enhancement in nanofluids was an effect of the surface modification through the nanoparticle deposition during nanofluid boiling. Possible reasons for CHF enhancement in pool boiling of nanofluids are discussed with surface property changes caused by the nanoparticle deposition.
The heat transfer enhancement by pulsatile flow in the plate heat exchanger has been investigated numerically in the present study. The numerical study was performed in the range of the mass flux from 0.04 to 0.12 kg/s. The results showed that the pulsatile flow produces resonating vortex shedding at the groove sharp edges and a strong transient vortex rotation within the grooved channels. As a result, the mixing between the trapped volume in the grooved cavity and the main stream was enhanced. Good agreements between the predictions and measured data are obtained in steady flow. And the heat transfer of pulsatile flow is about 2.4 times than steady flow when frequency is 10 Hz and the mass flux of cold side is 0.04 kg/s.
