  • In this study, we used TIPS (thermally induced phase separation) for the application of water treatment membrane, and observed the change in morphology of separation membrane due to the change of solidification temperature and heat capacity. For manufactured membrane, PVDF and silica with excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance were used, and DOP (dioctyl phthalate), DBP (dibutyl phthalate) were used as the diluent. Using the SEM (scanning electron microscope), the morphology of each different coagulation solutions of heat capacity change was observed. As the heat capacity increased, the crystallization rate of PVDF was decreased and showed large pore. In contrast, It also confirmed that the smaller heat capacity, the faster the crystallization rate and make smaller pores.

  • The effects of the mixed two solvents, Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and Dimethylformamide (DMF), and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as additives on performance of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were studied. Initially, PEG200 was used as a primary additive at fixed percentage of 5% wt. PVP was then blended with PEG200 in different concentrations. PVDF and DMAc were used as polymer and solvent in the casting solutions, respectively. To control the diffusion rate of PVP in the presence of PEG200 and PVP blend, mixtures of DMAc and DMF were used as the mixed solvent in the casting solutions. Asymmetric PVDF membranes were prepared via phase inversion process in a water bath and the effects of two additives and two solvents on the membrane morphology, pure water flux (PWF), hydrophilicity and rejection (R) were investigated. Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (ATR-FTIR) analysis was used to show the residual PVP on the surface of the membranes. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was utilized to determine roughness of membrane surface. The use of mixed solvents in the casting solution resulted in reduction of PVP diffusion rate and increment of PEG diffusion rate. Eventually, PWF and R values reduced, while porosity and hydrophilicity increased.

  • The impact of sodium hydroxide, which is one of chemicals of clean in place (CIP) for removing membrane fouling, on the PVDF membrane is reviewed with respect to physical/chemical structural change, the permeability affected therefrom. Based on the cleaning concentration applied in membrane water treatment facilities, 10% of accumulated defluorination was confirmed up to 166g.hr/L which reflects the exposure time. However, membrane resistance was confirmed to be reduced by about 10%. Through FT-IR and EDS analysis, reduction of F and change of are confirmed as factors that affect the permeability of membrane. Membrane resistance, which affects permeability, is affected by loss of additives for hydrophilicity, rather than defluorination of PVDF material. Therefore, in order to check membrane degradation degree, an accelerated test by NaOH was carried out, loss of additives was confirmed, and then PVDF inherent characteristic was observed.

  • As a novel hydrophobic monomer, polytetrahydrofuran diacrylate (PTMGDA) was synthesized by the esterification reaction between polyethylene tetrahydrofuran (PTMG) and acryloyl chloride (AC). In situ free radical polymerization reaction method was utilized to fabricate poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-PTMGDA-poly(ethylene oxide) dimethacrylate (PEGMA) ulrafiltration (UF) membranes. The performances of PVDF-PTMGDA-PEGMA UF membranes in terms of morphologies, mechanical properties, separation properties and hydrophilicities were investigated. The introduction of the PTMGDA-PEGMA dopants not only increased the membranes' pure water flux, but also improved their mechanical properties and the dynamic contact angles. The addition of the PTMGDA/PEGMA dopants led to the formation of the finger-like structure in the membrane bulk. With the increase concentration of PTMGDA/PEGMA dopants, the porosity and the mean effective pore size increased. Those performances were coincide with the physicochemical properties of the casting solutions.

  • In consideration of global environmental protection and fuel saving, aluminum alloy sheets for auto body panels such as hood, fender etc., are expected one of the most promising materials for weight saving of cars. The chemical conversion coating is required to prevent the filiform corrosion occurring on painted aluminum. However the conventional process for the composited material mixed with aluminum and steel is complexs; aluminum part is chromated and assembled to the body, and then the steel body undergoes Zn phosphating. In order to overcome the low productivity due to the complex process and the environmental problem with a conventional process, a simultaneous zinc phosphating process for alsuminum and steel in an assembled condition is demanded. Newly developed phosphate solution has been investigated to characterize the phosphating behavior under various conditions. The optimum conditions of the phosphating solution for the application of the paint treatment derived as follows : about 0.3 for the ratio of Zn to $PO_4$, , 200~500 ppm for the concentration of fluoride ion, and 2.5~4.0 for pH. The concentration of dissolved aluminum ion must be kept below 2--ppm and suitable accelerator is found to be a mixture of 1g/$\ell$ $NO_2\;^-$, and 6g/$\ell$ $NO_3\;^-$.

  • In this study, defluoridation efficiency by aluminium sulphate (alum) and polyaluminium chloride (PACl) were compared for recommended Nalgonda dose (100%) and 80% of this dose in both batch and continuous modes. The residual turbidity was found to be higher in case of alum as compared to PACl with 80% dose representing lesser efficient settling of suspensions, which primarily comprise alumino-fluoro complexes that result in high residual aluminium in the treated water and this was confirmed by TEM and Zeta analysis. Moreover, the application of PACl also resulted in much lesser addition to the TDS and also required lesser lime for pH compensation due to its lower acidity. Hence this reduced dose was recommended for defluoridation. It was also observed that in case of alum, residual aluminium in treated water was 0.88 mg/L (100% dose) & 0.72 mg/L (80% dose) and in case of PACl, it was 0.52 mg/L(100% dose) & 0.41 mg/L(80% dose). After subsequent microfiltration, residual aluminium was 0.28 & 0.21 mg/L for 100% & 80% dose respectively and in case of alum and in case of PACl, it was 0.16 & 0.11 for 100% & 80% dose respectively, which conform to the Al standards(<0.2 mg/L).

  • A POM-membrane was fabricated by immobilizing a keggin type polyoxometalate (POM) H5PV2Mo10O40 onto the surface of microporous flat-sheet polymeric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVFD) membrane using a chemical deposition method. The POM-membrane was characterized by FT-IR, SEM and EDX to confirm existing of the POM onto the membrane surface. The POM-membrane was used to remove an anionic textile dye (Reactive Black 5 named as an RB5) from aqueous phases with a cross-flow membrane filtration and a batch adsorption system. The dye removal efficiency of the POM-membrane using the cross-flow membrane filtration system and the batch adsorption system was about 88% and 98%, respectively. The influence factors such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial dye concentration were investigated to understand the adsorption mechanism of the RB5 dye onto the POM-membrane. To find the best fitting isotherm model, Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Harkins-Jura isotherm models were used to analyze the experimental data. The isotherm analysis showed that the Langmuir isotherm model was found to the best fit for the adsorption data (R2 = 0.9982, qmax = 24.87 mg/g). Also, adsorption kinetic models showed the pseudo second order kinetic model was found the best model to fit the experimental data (R2 = 0.9989, q = 8.29 mg/g, C0 = 15 ppm). Moreover, after four times regeneration with HNO3 acid, the POM-membrane showed high regenerability without losing dye adsorption capacity.

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat sheet hydrophobic membranes were prepared using 16 wt% PVDF in Dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) by phase inversion technique for desalination application using Membrane Distillation (MD). In this work, the effect of coagulation mediums such as ethanol and water as well their synergistic behavior on the fabricated PVDF membrane morphology was studied using SEM. Moreover, other characteristics required for the membrane distillation applications namely porosity, hydrophobicity and tensile strength were measured using the gravimetric method, sessile drop method and universal testing machine respectively. It was observed that the membrane morphology paradigm shifted from the finger-like structure to the sponge-like structure on increasing the ethanol concentration in coagulant. The porosity of the fabricated membrane was under the required MD range and found to be 57.3% at 16 weight % of PVDF in DMAc solvent under a pure ethanol coagulant bath. Moreover, the top surface contact angle ranges from 85° to 115° on increasing the bath concentration from CBC 0 to CBC 100 at 16 weight % of PVDF in DMAc solvent.

  • Sedimentation is one of the most common and important units in conventional water treatment plants. Structure such as various baffle walls and inclined plate settler may be obstacles to the horizontal flow when it is poorly designed. Therefore, the effects of these structures on characteristics of hydraulic flow must be evaluated to improve the settling efficiency of the floc. The hydraulic characteristic of the four sedimentations at the three real WTPs (water treatment plants), which have different structural properties respectively inside the settling basin, were investigated by tracer (fluoride) test. The inclined plate settler installed inside settling basin caused a undesirable impact on horizontal flow and produced dead zone. Intermediate baffle and solid baffle wall under the inclined plate settler at GE plant help to minimize the formation of density currents and flow short circuiting. However, installing perforated baffle under the inclined plate settler at other plants could not induce even distribution of flow. NaF used as a tracer was recovered more than 90% at investigated all basin. Morill index ($t_{90}/t_{10}$), Modal index ($t_p/T-HRT$) and short-circuiting index ($[M-HRT-t_p/M-HRT$) were determined from tracer test results performed at three WTPs. Those indices ranged 2.99~3.45, 0.44~0.72 and 0.23~0.47, respectively.
