Application of High Performance Coatings for Service Life Extension of Steel Bridge Coatings

  • In this study, performance tests, a field evaluation, and a life cycle cost (LCC) analysis for high performance coating systems were conducted to prepare a plan to reduce the cost of maintenance coating and contribute to the service life extension of steel bridges by applying high performance coatings to steel bridges that will be constructed in the future. From the deterioration models based on the field evaluation for chlorinated rubber and urethane topcoat systems, which have been applied often, the mean service lives were derived as 20.8 and 26.6 years, respectively. For the other coating systems that have not been applied in practice, the coordination factors were differentially applied with evaluation items. The most durable coating system was predicted to be thermal spray coating (TSC) primer/epoxy intermediate coat/fluoride resin topcoat, with a predicted value as long as 42.2 years. The LCC analysis indicates that partial application of high performance coating, such as TSC and fluoride resin, to specific parts vulnerable to corrosion and ultraviolet ray (UV) is more advantageous than the use of general coating systems.

Surface Roughness of Dentin and Formation of Early Cariogenic Biofilm after Silver Diamine Fluoride and Potassium Iodide Application (Silver Diamine Fluoride와 요오드화 칼륨 도포 후 상아질 표면 거칠기와 초기 우식원성 세균막 형성)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effect of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and potassium iodide (KI) on the formation of cariogenic biofilm and surface roughness in vitro. A total of 48 bovine dentin specimens with artificially induced caries were prepared and divided into 3 groups of 16: untreated control, SDF-treated, and SDF-treated followed by KI (SDFKI). Ten specimens from each group were used to observe microbial adhesion. Multispecies cariogenic biofilms including Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, and Candida albicans were cultured on the specimens. Microbes were cultured for 24 hours, and the colony-forming unit was calculated. The remaining specimens were observed by atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The number of bacteria was significantly lower in the SDF and SDFKI groups. KI did not inhibit the antibacterial activity of SDF significantly. SEM images showed particles generated after SDF and SDFKI application were deposited on the dentin, but there was no significant difference in surface roughness between the 3 groups. This study confirmed that SDF and SDFKI application did not have a significant effect on the surface roughness of dentin, but effectively inhibited the formation of the early cariogenic bacterial film after 24 hours compared to the control.

THE QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY OF NEW PATIENTS AND PARENTS REGARDING FLUORIDE (불소인식정도에 대한 조사보고)

  • At the department of Pediatric Dentistry in Chonbuk National University Hospital, authors conducted a survey of 50 new patients and 100 new parents regarding fluoride in order to discover what they think about fluoride. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. It answered patients 26% parents 51% and total 42.7% in knowledge about the use of fluoride in dental clinics 2. The knowledge about caries prevention effect of fluoride is high, patients 86%, parents 85% and total 85.3% 3. The patients and parents who wanted to use fluoride are 46%, 44% respectively 4. The patients and parents who experienced fluoridation are 60%, 55% respectively 5. It is not correspond the knowledge about caries prevention effect of fluoride and the practical method of application These results suggest that the number of patients and parents who use fluoride will increase if we advise them adequately.

A STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF DENTIN ADHESIVE TO FLUORIDE RELEASE OF COMPOMER (상아질 결합제가 컴포머의 불소유리에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • It is well known that glass-ionomer cement and compomer can release fluoride which can inhibit the progression of dental caries. The purposes of this study were to evaluate whether the fluoride from fluoride-containing filling materials can penetrate the dentin bonding adhesive and the dentin bonding adhesive can increase the bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer. The amount of fluoride release from resin-modified glass ionomer and compomer was measured during 28 days of period and statistically analyzed by t-test. The bond strength of each material with/without dentin bonding adhesive was measured and also statistically analyzed by t-test. The distribution of fluoride from each material into the tooth was explored by electron probe microanalysis system(EPMA). The experimental teeth used were second primary molars about to exfoliate. The amount of fluoride release from each material was diminished by dentin bonding adhesive during 28 days(p<0.05) and the bond strength was not increased by dentin adhesive in resin-modified glass ionomer. The bond strength of group VI was not detectable. The distribution of fluoride from each material into teeth was according to dentino-enamel junction and dispersed into pulp from pulpal floor. The widest distribution was shown in resin-modified glass ionomer cement filled without the application of dentin bonding adhesive.

  • Composite resin restorations are widely used to restore decayed teeth or preventive restoration in children. Children often receive topical fluoride treatments on a semiannual basis. However there is concern that topical acidulated phosphate fluorides (APF) may cause deterioration of composite resins. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface changes in composite resins due to topical fluoride application. Composite resins(Solitaire $2^{(R)}$, Metafil $CX^{(R)}$, Composan $LCM^{(R)}$, $Charmseal^{(R)}$) in topical fluoride agents were immersed and their surface roughness, weight loss and SEM findings were evaluated. The results were as follows: 1. The 4 minutes-immersion group showed more roughened surface than 1 minute-immersion group and the control group showed the smoothest surface among all the materials, and there was statistically significant difference between the groups except the Composan $LCM^{(R)}$ (P<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference between the 1 minute-immersion group and 4 minutes-immersion group in weight loss (P>0.05) 3. The experimental group treated with topical fluoride gel showed generally more roughened surface than control group in the SEM findings.

EFFECT OF LASER IRRADIATION AND FLUORIDE APPLICATION ON REMINERALIZATION OF ERODED PRIMARY DENIAL ENAMEL (침식된 유치 법랑질에 대한 레이저 조사 및 불소도포의 재광화 효과)

  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the remineralizing effects of Nd : YAG laser irradiation and fluorides application on primary tooth enamel eroded by acidic drink. The materials were 30 sound primary teeth with intact smooth enamel surfaces. They were demineralized with Coca-cola at $37^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours and then irradiated by Nd: YAG laser with 6W power, $50mJ/cm^2$ energy density. and 20Hz pulse repetition. After laser irradiation, teeth were treated by three kinds of fluorides : (1) 0.05% NaF solution, (2) 1.23% APF gel and (3) 0.1% fluoride varnish. Diagnodent scores and microhardness (VHN) were measured before and after the each treatment. The results were as follows: 1. Diagnodent scores decreased to 23.51% from the initial after demineralization, and then increased to 37.37% after laser irradiation, and to 51.34% after fluoride treatment. There were significant differences between the total scores of initial, demineralization, laser irradiation and fluoride treatment (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between scores after fluoride treatment according to fluoride types. 2. Microhardness(VHN) decreased to 33.58% from the initial after demineralization and then increased to 43.99% after laser irradiation, and to 51.38% after fluoride treatment. There were significant differences between the total scores of initial, demineralization, laser irradiation and fluoride treatment (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between scores after fluoride treatment according to fluoride types.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluated the improve method of demineralization and damage on the enamel stufece related to bonded orthodontic bracket. Enamel surface of the 40 Intact premolars were treated by aicd etching and various fluoride application methods and then maintained in the patient mouth of 3 months. After extraction of all the sampled premolars, enamel surfaces were evaluated by Scanning electron microscope. The obtained results were as follow. 1. Enamel surface relate to bonded orthodontic bracket showed demineralization and damage, slightly. 2. Group 6 treated by $2\%$ NaF iontophoresis presented and almost similarity to nomral enamel surface. 3. Group 2 treated by acid etching had demineralization and damage on the enamel surface much more than other groups treated by various fluoride application methods. 4. Demineralization and damage on the enamel surface caused by bonded orthodontic bracket is improved by various fluoride application methods.

The Effect of Preventive Treatment Experience on Treatment Satisfaction and Dental Fear (예방처치경험이 진료만족도 및 치과공포도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the convergence effects of the experience of adult preventive care on the treatment satisfaction and the dental fear, and the survey was conducted from January to April 2017 for 292 adults of aged 20 years or older living in the metropolitan area. The collected data were subjected to $x^2-test$, t-test and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 22.0 program. Fluoride application was the most prevalent experience of adult preventive treatment, and the satisfaction level of the treatment was high in case of fluoride application was experienced. On the other hand, dental fear was lower if preventive scaling was experienced. As a result of multiple regression analysis, variables affecting patient satisfaction were experience of fluoride application, and the variables affecting dental fear level were oral health condition and preventive scaling experience. The result of this study was confirmed that the satisfaction level of treatment was increased and the dental fear was lowered. Therefore, improvement of oral health promotion can be expected by recognizing of the importance of preventive treatment and providing of the dental preventive service through oral health education.

Effect of Fluoride Treatment after Bleaching with Hydrogen Peroxide exposed to Plasma Arc (고농도 과산화수소와 플라즈마 아크를 이용한 미백 치료에 있어서 불소의 효과)

  • This study evaluated whether fluoride treatment can affect recovery of the irregularity of enamel surface after tooth whitening with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide (HP) activated by plasma arc light. A total of 36 bovine teeth stained with coke were used in this experiment. The specimens were classified into following three groups (two different commercial plasma arc groups and a control group without light curing source): (1) 35% HP gel only, (2): 35% HP gel and Plasma arc A, and (3) 35% HP gel and Plasma arc B. To measure color changes and surface morphologies before and after the bleaching, colorimeter and scanning electron microscopy were used, respectively. When the specimens were bleached with hydrogen peroxide and plasma arc lights, the bleaching effect was greater than when only hydrogen peroxide gels were used (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0.05). In addition, plasma arc B showed the more color changes than plasma arc A (Bonferroni post-hoc test, p<0.05). The surfaces of the teeth treated with fluoride gel after the whitening treatment came to be smooth. Therefore, the results of this study suggested that the fluoride application for patients who got tooth whitening therapy with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide gels activated by plasma arc light will be effective to recover rough enamel surfaces.
