  • In the design and construction of underground structures, it is essential to accurately predict the structural behavior of the fluid-saturated ground during and after excavation. Terzaghi and Biot established the theory for the behavior of such two phase material. For the purpose of analysing the saturated porous solid system, finite element procedure provides a powerful tool. In this paper, a finite element analysis procedure based upon Biot's theory is presented to evaluate the deformation of solid skeleton and pore pressure of entraped fluid. Teraghi's onf-dimensional and Gibson's two-dimensional problems are solved using Q4 and Q8 element to verify the program validity.

  • The study is concerned with the theoretical and experimental investigation of axisymmetric fluid pressure-driven hydroforming of sheet metal by forming over the die cavity. The rigid-plastic finite element method is employed to calculate the stress and strain distribution. The effect of blank size and die radius is also studied in the finite element analysis. Experiments are carried out for hydroforming of cold-rolled steel sheets under various process conditions. The computational results are compared with the experimental results for the forming pressure vs. pole displacement relations and strain distributions. Comparison has shown that theoretical predictions by the finite element method are in good agreement with the experiment with the experimental observations. Thus, it is shown that the rigid-plastic finite element method is effectively used in the analysis of axisymmetric fluid pressure-driven hydroforming process.

  • Tanks are used extensively in many engineering areas for spent fuel pool structures at nuclear power plants or for water storage tanks in bulk carriers. To ensure the structural integrity of such tanks when under dynamic loads, modal characteristics such as natural frequencies, participation factors and mode shapes should be known. Investigated in this study are the modal characteristics of a square tank by the finite element method. This approach can be used with subsequent dynamic analyses such as a response spectrum analysis or a harmonic analysis. Finite element models are prepared to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes, which are easy to find the modal characteristics of a fluid-filled square tank. The effects of the fluid contained in the tank and the boundary conditions at top and bottom ends on the modal characteristics are assessed by several finite element analyses.

  • Modeling and analyzing the dynamic behavior of fluid-soil-structure interaction problems are crucial in structural engineering. The solution to such coupled engineering systems is often not achievable through analytical modeling alone, and a numerical solution is necessary. Generally, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is commonly used to address such problems. However, when dealing with coupled problems with complex geometry, the finite element method may not precisely represent the geometry, leading to errors that impact solution quality. Recently, Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) has emerged as a preferred method for modeling and analyzing complex systems. In this study, IGA based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) is employed to analyze the seismic behavior of concrete gravity dams, considering fluid-structure-foundation interaction. The performance of IGA is then compared with the classical finite element solution. The computational efficiency of IGA is demonstrated through case studies involving simulations of the reservoir-foundation-dam system under seismic loading.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the dynamic behavior of magnetic fluid in a circular pipe with multiple permanent magnets. Magnetic fluid react on magnetic field against the normal fluid. In other words, magnetic fluid flow has the electromagnetism and fluid mechanics. So magnetic fluids has studied about the fluids properties and experiment. In this paper we studied the magnetic fluids velocity and pressure distribution for the novel type actuator. Because the velocity and pressure distribution is the important element of the magnetic fluids flow. First, we analyzed the Maxwell equation for the multiple permanent magnet and then concluded the governing equations for the magnetic fluid flow using the equation of Navier-Stokes. And, we simulated the dynamic behavior of magnetic fluid flow using the FEM(Finite Element Method). And we illustrated the relation between magnetic field and dynamic behavior of magnetic fluid flow.

  • The effects of radiation damping is used to compensate the truncated boundary which is relatively close to the structure-fluid interface in the fluid element surrounding the submerged structures. An efficient ring element is presented to model the shell and fluid element which fully utilizes the characteristics of the axisymmetry. The computational model uses the technique which separate the meridional shape and circumferential wave mode and gets similar result with the exact solution in the eigenvalues and the earthquake analysis. The fluid-structure interaction techniques is developed in the finite element analysis of two dimensional problems using the relations between pressure, nodal unknown acceleration and added mass assuming the fluid to be invicid, incompressible and irrotational. The effectiveness and efficiency of the technique is demonstrated by analyzing the free vibration and seismic analysis using the added mass matrix considering the structural deformation effect.

  • Recently, many studies have been performed and good results have been reported in literature on the prediction of the brake disk temperature. However, study on the brake fluid temperature is rarely found despite of its importance. In this study, brake fluid temperature is predicted according to material property of brake piston. For the analysis, a typical disk-pad brake system is modeled including the brake disk, pad, caliper, piston and brake fluid. Vehicle deceleration, weight distribution by deceleration, disc-pad heat division and the cooling of brake components are considered in the analysis of heat transfer. Unsteady-state temperature distribution are analyzed by using the finite element method and numerical results are compared with the vehicle test data

  • In order to investigate the vibration characteristics of fluid-structure interaction problem, we modeled two identical rectangular plates coupled with fluid. A commercial computer code, ANSYS was used to perform finite element analysis and FEM solutions were compared with the experimental results to verify the finite element model. As a result, comparison of FEM and experiment showed good agreement, and the transverse vibration modes, in-phase and out-of-Phase, were observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system. The effect of fluid gap size on the fluid-coupled natural frequency were investigated. It was shown that the mode numbers increased, the normalized natural frequencies monotonically increased. And it was also found that an increase of the fluid gap reduced the coupled natural frequencies for the in-phase modes but increased the coupled natural frequencies for the out-of phase modes, and eventually converged to the results of an infinite fluid gap.

  • In this study, we investigated the signal intensity changes by activating all and partially selected coil elements as a way to increase the SNR in a single region MR imaging. Two cylindrical fluid phantoms were placed side by side in a phase array coil and MRI scans were repeated by turning on the entire elements and selected elements. As a result, on both of the T1 and T2 weighted images signal intensities were significantly increased by 5.49% and 14.64%, respectively. In conclusion, if only a single region was to be imaged, selecting appropriate elements and collecting signals only from them could easily improve image qualities and signal intensities.
