Characteristics of Scroll-type Stirling Engine for Solar Power (태양열 발전용 스크롤 방식 스털링 엔진의 특성)

  • Stirling engine is a promising heat engine with a high efficiency, muti-fuel capability, low emission, quiet operation, very low maintenance and long life. As one of the promising applications, solar power system based on the Stirling dish, providing net solar-to-electric conversion efficiencies reaching 30%, can operate as stand-alone units in remote locations or can be linked together in groups to provide utility-scale power. This paper introduced a new Scroll-type Stirling engine, being developed for solar power, superior to conventional Stirling engines. The Scroll-type Stirling engine is characterized as traits of continuous and wholly separated compression and expansion; one-way flow system; direct cooling and heating the fluid in the working spaces through the extensive inner surfaces of scroll wraps. All theses traits contribute to achieving thermodynamic cycle closer to the ideal Stirling cycle (exactly speaking, Ericsson cycle).

Investigation of Pintle Shape Effect on the Nozzle Performance (핀틀 형상이 노즐 성능에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Typical solid rocket motors have a fixed propellant grain shape and nozzle throat size resulting in a fixed motor thrust. Pintle nozzle has been suggested as a means of providing variable thrust while maintaining the inherent advantage of solid rocket motors. In this study, the pintle shape effect on nozzle performance is investigated using experimental-aided Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). The pintle shape is modified by a principle of monotony. CFD analysis is performed using Fluent by applying the turbulent model. This analysis indicates that nozzle thrust and pintle load are influenced by change of nozzle shock pattern and flow separation due to pintle shape and there exists a high-performing pintle shape.

Validation and Application of OpenFOAM for Prediction of Livestock Airborne Virus Spread (공기 중 축산질병 확산예측을 위한 오픈폼 도입 및 검증)

  • Accurate wind data is essential for predicting airborne spread of virus. OpenFOAM was used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation procedure which is under GNU GPL (General Public License). Using complex terrain, DEM (Digital Elevation Map) that was prepared from GIS information covering a research site is converted to a three dimensional surface mesh that is composed by quad and full hexahedral space meshes. Around this surface mesh, an extended computational domain volume was designed. Atmospheric flow boundary conditions were used at inlet and roughness height and was considered at terrain by using rough wall function. Two different wind conditions that was relatively stable during certain periods were compared in 3 different locations for validating the accuracy of the CFD computed solution. The result shows about 10 % of difference between the calculated result and measured data. This procedure can simulate a prediction of time-series data for airborne virus spread that can be used to make a web-based forecasting system of airborne virus spread.

  • Computational fluid dynamic simulation is performed for the floating turbulent premixed flames stabilized in stagnation flows of Cho et al. [1] and Cheng and Shepherd [2]. They are both in the wrinkled flamelet regime far from the extinction limit with $u'/S^{0}_{L}$ less than unity. The turbulent flux is given in the first moment closure as a sum of the classical gradient flux due to turbulent motions and the countergradient flux due to thermal expansion. The parameter $N_{B}'s$ are greater than unity with the countergradient flux dominant over the gradient flux. The countergradient flux is assumed to be zero in $\bar{c}<0.05$. The flame surface density is modeled as a symmetric parabolic function with respect to $\bar{c}$. The product of the maximum flame surface density and the mean stretch factor is considered as a tuning constant to match the flame location. Good agreement is achieved with the measured $\tilde{w}$ and $\bar{c}$ profiles along the axis in both flames.

  • A computational fluid analysis was performed on an LOx line system of a liquid rocket engine. The model was created with 3D CAD and imbedded to the 3D CFD program. Before the full scale analysis on the system was carried out, each components with simplified models was analyzed to save time and cost. As a result, the inlet pressure of the gas generator should be compensated with a certain device unless the inlet pressure of the line system is sufficiently high. The flow pattern of the exit of the system was dependant upon the location of the orifice as well as the size. As a whole the line system analyzed met the requirements, and will be tested and confirmed after being manufactured.

  • As the demand on ubiquitous communication increases, global roaming and vertical handover will be prevailing in the near future. Since this environment is accompanied by the frequent handovers at remote sites, a scalable and fast authentication becomes prerequisite for ubiquitous communication. In this paper, we suggest a framework for scalable and fast authentication, using hierarchical caching based on general trust relationship among domains. At the end, we show that the proposed scheme achieves reduced authentication delay and network overhead through an analytic method with fluid flow model.

KFLOW Results of Airloads on HART-II Rotor Blades with Prescribed Blade Deformation

  • A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver, KFLOW, using overlapped grids has recently been developed to simulate unsteady flow phenomena over helicopter rotor blades. The blade-vortex interaction is predicted for a descending flight using measured blade deformation data. The effects of computational grid resolution and azimuth angle increments on airloads were examined, and computed airloads and vortex trajectories were compared with HART-II wind tunnel data. The current method predicts the BVI phenomena of blade airloads reasonably well. It is found from the present study that a peculiar distribution of vorticity of tip vortices in an approximate azimuth angle range of 90 to 180 degrees can be explained by physics of the shear-layer interaction as well as the dissipation of numerical schemes.

  • Valves, which are used to supply or block the flow of cryogenic pressurant in the pressurization system of liquid-propellant propulsion system in a launch vehicle, are pneumo-actuated valve, solenoid valve, pyro-valve, etc. Both pneumo-actuated valve and solenoid valve have more complex structure and are heavier than pyro-valve. For this study, a couple of pyro-valves, which are applicable to cryogenic and high-pressure fluid (cryogenic gaseous helium), have a simple structure, and are comparably light, are designed, manufactured, and tested (proof-pressure/leakage tests, performance test, vibration test, helium supply tests).

Analytical Approach of New Random-walk Based Mobility Management Scheme in IP-based Mobile Networks

  • In next-generation wireless networks, provisioning of IP-based network architecture and seamless transmission services are very important issues for mobile nodes. For this reason, a mobility management mechanism to support global roaming is highly regarded. These technologies bring a broader life by using a global roaming account through the connection of multiple devices or technology to mobile users; they also provide real-time multimedia services. This paper presents a comprehensive performance analysis of fast handover for hierarchical mobile IPv6 (F-HMIPv6), hierarchical mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6), Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6), and fast Proxy Mobile IPv6 (FPMIPv6) using the fluid-flow model and random-walk model. As a result, the location update cost of the PMIPv6 and FPMIPv6 is better than that of HMIPv6 and F-HMIPv6. These results suggest that the network-based mobility management technology is superior to the hierarchical mobility management technology in the mobility environment.

  • The Pump/Motor Selection Program for optimized selection of regional water supply facilities was developed based on a flowchart compiled from basic operational data, total head requirement, initial pump/motor specification selection etc.. This program was developed in Visual Basic. The program accepts, as in the flowchart, operational requirements of pumps and other system requirements and calculates specific speed based on flow rate, total head and na Then the calculated specific speed is used to select pump types and rpm Prior to determining likelihood of cavitation occurring at the calculated NPSH. Power requirement is then calculated for safe operation of pump to assist final pump selection. Test results of the program matches very closely to the design values of Paldang intake pump station(3rd stage) proving that the program can be used as an effective and practical aid for designing new regional water supply systems.
