  • This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially- injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flame let model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.

  • Heat pipe with axial grooves formed from corrugated plate in the adiabatic section is studied. The axial grooves made of thin corrugated plate decrease considerably the flow resistance in the adiabatic section without increasing the thermal resistance of the heat pipe, resulting in the increase of the capillary limit, especially in the cases of heat pipes that have long adiabatic section. In the theoretical analysis, it is assumed that the liquid flow in each section laminar and fully developed and Darcy's equation can be applied to each section neglecting the end-effects associated with each transitionary region. A heat pipe which consists of axially corrugated rectangular grooves in the adiabatic section and bronze mesh in the evaporator and codenser sections was made and tested. Comparison of the experimental results, using acetone as the working fluid, with the theoretical result shows satisfactory agreement.

  • Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle - installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction steam line - inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows in reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical analysis results using the FLUENT code and the down scale experimental data in an effort to determine root causes of the shell wall thinning of the high pressure feedwater heaters. The numerical analysis and experimental data were also confirmed by actual wall thickness measured by an ultrasonic test.

  • A degasser is a separation unit used in drilling to separate gas from the drilling mud. The degasser used in offshore drilling was developed at an early stage of drilling. Since its development, the design of the degasser’s internal structure has been optimized, with many limitations due to the restrictions of experimental and computational performance measurement methods. Despite the recent development of CFD technology for multiphase flow analysis, CFD has only been used in a limited way for degasser internal flow analysis and design optimization. In this study, a design optimization procedure for a degasser’s internal structure design was proposed, and CFD analyses of three types of internal structural designs were performed to evaluate the separation performance. The CFD result for each design type was used for the design optimization and, as the result, an optimized design is proposed.

  • Fuel shutoff valve of a combustion chamber controls propellant mass flowrate of a rocket engine, by using pilot pressure and spring force. The developing fuel shutoff valve can be self sustained even though pilot pressure is removed in an actuator. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of the forces with respect to the opening and closing of the valve in order to evaluate its performance. In light of this, the valve has been designed to adjust the control pressure for the opening of the poppet and to determine the working fluid pressure at which the valve starts to close. This paper also has been predicted flow coefficient of the valve by Fluent(ver. 12.0) CFD analysis. Various results from the prediction and the analysis have been compared with experiments.

  • This paper describes the numerical simulations in the cooling of the radiator in a distribution transformer. The aim of this work is the cooling optimization of the transformer by CFD simulations. A clear understanding of the cooling pattern in a radiator which is a main heat remover in the power transformer is essential for optimizing the radiator design increasing the thermal efficiency. In this paper we study the heat transfer and fluid flow in a 3-phase 400kVA transformer. The plate radiators of this transformer become wrinkled (corrugated radiator) and there are filled with transformer oil. The oil is circulated due to the natural convection driven by buoyancy effects through radiators so that the ultimate cooling medium is the surrounding air. In the design of transformers, it is of interest to minimize the cost and size of radiators. The obtained results show the temperature and flow distributions and the possibility to optimize the transformer with 3-dimensional CFD models using FLUENT.

  • Computational investigation was conducted to study the effects of the shape parameter of shroud on the performance of the outdoor unit of an air-conditioners. For this study the Design of Experiment(4-factor 3-level) was created and the an automatic program was composed using VBA to reduce the load of pre-process for CFD. The estimated mathematical equation was produced from this analysis and it was found that the gap between fan and shroud affects more heavily than the other parameters. As a result, the composition of the best parameters was verified that its flow rate was increased by 10 percents and sound pressure level was reduced by 1.2 dBA compare with the worst. And finally, a kind of Propeller fan with blades which were attached to the shroud, so-called 'ProBeller Fan' was introduced in this study.

  • Flow and pressure ripple in swash plate type piston pumps is largely dependent on the design of notches(silencing grooves) in the valve plate. In uni-directional pumps, the basic design concept for notches in the valve plate could be said to be established. It is easily deduced that the design concept for notches in uni-directional pumps can not be simply applied to bi-directional pumps requested for EHA(electric hydrostatic actuators). To carry out systematic research on technological issues regarding notch applications to bi-directional piston pumps, five notch designs are devised. The effects of the notch designs on the characteristics of the pump are investigated by numerical simulations and experiments. Through this study, basic concepts about notch design for bi-directional piston pumps are suggested.

  • A theoretical analysis was performed on the heat transfer by laminar oscillating flow in a simplified heat exchanger of a Stirling cycle machine and the results were compared with the experiment of Hwang. In the analysis the general solution to the temperature field obtained by Lee et. al was applied and extended to a more realistic situation. The results show that the heat transfer is influenced by the ratio of the swept distance of the fluid to the length of the heat exchanger as well as the oscillation frequency. This is well consistent with the result of Hwang's experiment. It is also revealed that there exist three distinct regimes having different heat transfer mechanisms. Through the scale analysis the main parameters governing the heat transfer in each regime are reduced and the dependency of the heat transfer on the parameters are examined.

  • Clocking effects of a stator on the performance and internal flow in an UTRC 1.5 stage axial turbine are investigated using a three-dimensional unsteady flow simulation. Six relative positions of two rows of stator are investigated by positioning the second stator being clocked in a step of 1/6 pitch. The relative efficiency benefit of about 1% is obtained depending on the clocking positions. However, internal flows have some different characteristics from that in the previous study at the best and worst efficiency positions, since be first stator wake is mixed out with the rotor wake before arriving at the leading edge of the second stator. Instead of the first stator wake, it is found that the wake interaction of the first stator and rotor has a important role on a relative efficiency variation at each clocking position. The time-averaged local efficiency along the span at the maximum efficiency is more uniform than that at the minimum efficiency. That is, the spanwise efficiency distribution at the minimum efficiency has larger values in mid-span but smaller values near the hub and casing in comparison to those at the maximum efficiency. Moreover, the difference between maximum and minimum instantaneous efficiencies during one period is found to be smaller at the maximum efficiency than at the minimum efficiency.
