The performance of a downward-irradiation sonoreactor was investigated using calorimetry, KI dosimetry, luminol (Sonochemiluminescence, SCL) method, and aluminium foil erosion method as one of the basic steps for the optimal design of downward-irradiation sonoreactors. The applied frequency was 28 kHz and the input electrical power was 280 - 300 W. The liquid height, from the reactor bottom to the transducer module surface, ranged from 1λ (53.6 mm) to 2λ (107.1 mm). For various liquid heights, the magnitude of calorimetric power and the mass of cavitation-generated I3- ion varied significantly. It was found that the additional application of mechanical mixing resulted in higher sonochemical activity, especially in the cavitational active zone, which was induced by violent liquid flow in the reactor. In aluminium foil erosion tests, it was found that less ultrasound energy reached the bottom of the reactor due to the violent liquid flow and no significant sonophysical effect was observed for higher mixing rate conditions (100 and 200 rpm).

The hybrid rocket shows interesting characteristics of complicated mixing layer developed by the interaction between turbulent oxidizer flow and injected surface mass flow from fuel vaporization. In this study, the compressible LES was conducted to explore the physical phenomena of surface oscillatory flow induced by the flow interferences in a duct domain. From the numerical results, the wall injection generates the stronger streamwise vorticites and the negative components of axial velocity accompanied with the azimuthal vorticity near the surface. And the vortex shedding with a certain time scale was found to be developed by hydrodynamic instability in the mixing layer. The pressure fluctuations in this calculation exhibit a peculiar peak at a specific angular frequency($\omega$=8.8) representing intrinsic oscillation due to the injection.

The effect of secondary flow on the heat transfer of a turbulent wake generated by a flat plate was experimentally investigated. The secondary flow was induced in a curved duct in which the flat plate wake generator was installed. All three components of turbulent heat flux were measured in the plane containing the mean radius of curvature of the curved duct. The results showed that mean temperature profiles deviate from the similarity of the straight wake because of the cold fluid transported from the free-stream. The half-width of the mean temperature profile increased rapidly by upwash motion of the secondary flow. The changes to turbulence structure caused by the secondary flow show more pronounced effect on heat transport than on momentum transport. This is because the response to the variation of flow conditions is delayed in temperature field. Negative production of the turbulent heat flux is observed in the inner wake region. From the conditional averaging, it has been found that the negative production of the turbulent heat flux is generated due to a mixing process between the hot and low momentum eddies occupied in the inner wake region and the cold and high momentum eddies in the potential region.

Mixing and combustion experiments with a vent slot mixer were performed in Mach 2 supersonic wind tunnel. Helium and hydrogen gases each were used for the mixing and the combustion experiment with a plasma jet (PJ) torch. The vent slot mixer holds plenty of fuel in the downstream mixing region, even though the fuel is transversely injected. In case of the combustion, the injected fuel is ignited by the PJ torch, and then unburned mixture is burned by shock-induced combustion downstream. Thermal choking in the combustor leads to shock trains in the isolator, causing the unstable combustion.

Mixers are used in various industrial fields where it is necessary to intimately mix two reactants in a short period of time. However, despite their widespread use, complex unsteady flow characteristics of industrial mixers are not systematic investigated. The present study aimed to clarify unsteady flow characteristics induced by various impellers in a tank. Impellers arc hydrofoil turbine and neo-hydrofoil turbine types. A high speed CCD camera and an Ar-Ion laser for illumination were adopted to clarify the time-dependent flow characteristics of the mixers. The rotating speed of impellers increased from 6Hz to 60Hz by 6Hz, The maximum velocity around neo-hydrofoil impeller is higher than the hydrofoil type impeller. These two types of turbine shows that typical flow characteristics of axial turbine and suitable for mixing high-viscosity materials.
The effervescent atomizer is one of twin-fluid atomizers that aeration gas enters into bulk liquid and two-phase flow is formed in the mixing section. The effervescent atomizer requires low injection pressure and small amount of aeration gas, as compared to other twin-fluid atomizers. In this study, cold flow test was conducted to investigate the spray characteristics of aerated impinging jets. The present effervescent impinging atomizers were composed of the aerator device and like-on-like doublet impinging atomizer which had different impinging angles. To analyze the spray characteristics such as breakup length and droplet size distribution, the image processing technique was adopted by using instantaneous images at each flow condition. Non-dimensional parameters, induced by the homogeneous flow model, were used to predict the breakup length. The breakup length was decreased with the mixture Reynolds number and impinging angle increasing. The result of droplets showed that the size distribution was axisymmetric about the center of the injector and their diameter tended to decrease with increasing GLR.
The vertical distribution of hydraulic conductivity of 3 boreholes located at Kongju National University was estimated by the ambient flow and the pump-induced flow measurements using a heat-pulse flowmeter. The ambient flow measurements showed that a great amount of groundwater (1~2 m$^3$/day) flowed in the boreholes through the conductive fractures. The analyzed conductivity profiles we similar to those of the packer test performed for the same boreholes. The conductive fractures in which the differential net flow changed greatly could be identified by the BIPS logging. The water-quality logging data showed that quality of groundwater changed abruptly at some depths of the boreholes. This change in water quality can be attributed to the presence of conductive fractures that have resulted in the mixing of groundwater of different quality flowing in different fracture channels. However, compared to the flowmeter test, the water-quality logging showed low capability in identifying locations of conductive fractures.

The PWR Nuclear Fuel assembly consists of more than 250 fuel rods that are supported by leaf springs in the cells of more than 10 Spacer Grids (SG) along the rod length. Since it is not easy to conduct mechanical tests on a full-scale model basis, the small-scaled rod bundle (5$\times$5) is generally used for various performance tests during the development stage. As one of the small-scaled tests, a flow test should be carried out in order to verify the performance of the spacer grid like the coolant mixing performance and to obtain the Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) characteristics of the rod bundle over the specified flow range. A vibration test should be also performed to obtain the modal parameters of the bundle prior to the flow test. In this study, we want to develop the estimation procedure of the damping ratio for the small scaled test bundle. For the damping factor of the rod bundle and the grid case at the first vibration mode, as one of the vibration tests, a so-called pluck testing has been performed in air as a preliminary test prior to in-flow damping measurement test. Logarithmic decrement method is used for calculation of the damping ratio. Estimated damping ratio of the rod bundle is about 0.7% with reasonable error of 2% for the previous results. Nonlinear behavior of the rod bundle might be stem mainly Iron the rod-grid support configuration.
A steady slot suction near the free-end leading edge of a finite-length square cylinder was used to control its aerodynamic forces and vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The freestream oncoming flow velocity ($U_{\infty}$) was from 3.8 m/s to 12.8 m/s. The width of the tested cylinder d = 40 mm and aspect ratio H/d = 5, where H was the height of the cylinder. The corresponding Reynolds number was from 10,400 to 35,000. The tested suction ratio Q, defined as the ratio of suction velocity ($U_s$) at the slot over the oncoming flow velocity at which the strongest VIV occurs ($U_{\nu}$), ranged from 0 to 3. It was found that the free-end slot suction can effectively attenuate the VIV of a cantilevered square cylinder. In the experiments, the RMS value of the VIV amplitude reduced quickly with Q increasing from 0 to 1, then kept approximately constant for $Q{\geq}1$. The maximum reduction of the VIV occurs at Q = 1, with the vibration amplitude reduced by 92%, relative to the uncontrolled case. Moreover, the overall fluctuation lift of the finite-length square cylinder was also suppressed with the maximum reduction of 87%, which occurred at Q = 1. It was interesting to discover that the free-end shear flow was sensitive to the slot suction near the leading edge. The turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) of the flow over the free end was the highest at Q = 1, which may result in the strongest mixing between the high momentum free-end shear flow and the near wake.

For the Purpose of understanding the mixing phenomena of a GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, the spray behaviors and fuel distributions were investigated in a single cylinder transparent GDI engine. The experimental engine is a swirl type GDI engine with a SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used for the measurement of the fuel distributions. The effects of SCV opening angles and the injector specifications on the fuel distribution characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the SCV opening angle had a great effect on the fuel distributions in the late stage of compression process by changing the flow fields in the combustion chamber.
