  • Three-dimensional, time-dependent solutions of fluid flow past a circular cylinder with a periodic array of circular fins are obtained using an accurate and efficient spectral multidomain methodology. A Fourier expansion with a corresponding uniform grid is used along the circumferential direction. A spectral multidomain method with Chebyshev collocation is used along the r-z plane to handle the periodic array of circular fins attached to the surface of the cylinder. Unlike the flow past a circular cylinder, Second instabilities like mode A and mode B are not found in the Reynolds number range $100\~500$. It is found that three-dimensional instability of vortical structures is suppressed due to the presence of fin. The present numerical solutions report the detailed information of flow quantities near wake of finned cylinder.

  • In this work, we numerically investigate the effect of viscoelasticity on 2D laminar vortex dynamics in flows past a single rotating cylinder for rotational rates $0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}5$ (the rotational rate ex is defined by the ratio of the circumferential rotating velocity to free stream velocity) at Re=100, in which the vortex shedding has been predicted to occur in literature for Newtonian fluids. The objective of the present research is to develop a promising technique to fully suppress the vortex shedding past a bluff body by rotating a cylinder and controlling fluid elasticity. The predicted vortex dynamics with the present method is consistent with the previous works for Newtonian flows past a rotating cylinder. We also verified our method by comparing our data with the literature in the case of viscoelastic flow past a non-rotating cylinder. For $0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}1.8$, the frequency of vortex shedding slightly decreases but the fluctuation of drag and lift coefficient significantly decreases with increasing fluid elasticity. We observe that the vortex shedding of viscoelastic flow disappears at lower ${\alpha}$ than the Newtonian case. At ${\alpha}$=5, the relationship between the frequency of vortex shedding and Weissenberg number (Wi) is predicted to be non-monotonic and have a minimum around Wi=0.25. The vortex shedding finally disappears over critical Wi number. The present results suggest that the vortex shedding in the flow around a rotating cylinder can be more effectively suppressed for viscoelastic fluids than Newtonian fluids.

  • It has been known that there is a viscoelastic instability in the channel flow past a cylinder at high Deborah (De) number. Some of our numerical simulations and a boundary layer analysis indicated that this instability is related to the shear flow in the gap between the cylinder and the channel walls in our previous work. The critical condition for instability initiation may be related to an inflection velocity profile generated by the normal stress near the cylinder surface. At high De, the elastic normal stress coupling with the streamline curvature is responsible for the shear instability, which has been recognized by the community. In this study, an instability criterion for the flow problem is proposed based on the analysis on the pressure gradient and some supporting numerical simulations. The critical De number for various model fluids is given. It increases with the geometrical aspect ratio h/R (half channel width/cylinder radius) and depends on a viscosity ratio ${\beta}$(polymer viscosity/total viscosity) of the model. A shear thinning first normal stress coefficient will delay the instability. An excellent agreement between the predicted critical Deborah number and reported experiments is obtained.

  • A parametric study has been carried out to elucidate the characteristics of flow past a square cylinder inclined with respect to the main flow for Re$\leq$150. Reynolds number and angle of incidence are the key parameters which determine the flow characteristics. This study would be the first step towards understanding flow pattern past a cylindrical structure under a strong gust of wind from the viewpoint of wind hazards. A complete classification of flow pattern has been obtained in the laminar region.

  • Flow characteristics of turbulent steady fluid flow past a cylinder in rectangular duct are measured by 5 W laser doppler velocity meter. The fluid flow is also computed by commercial software of STAR-CD for comparison between the measurement and computation. The turbulent models applied in the computations are standard K-epsilon model, RNG K-epsilon model and Chen K-epsilon model. Acurracy of standard K-epsilon model is a little bit better than acurracies of other models even though those models have almost the same order of error compared to measured data. The computations predict satisfactorily the measured velocity profiles at middle section of the circular cylinder before the fluid flow diverges. However, there are some disagreements between them at down stream from the circular cylinder.

  • In the present study, two-dimensional numerical investigation of flow past a square cylinder beneath the free surface has been performed to identify the effects of presence of the free surface. An immersed boundary method was adopted for implementation of the cylinder cross-section in a Cartesian grid system. Also, a level-set method was used to capture the interface of two fluids. To prevent transition to three-dimensional flow, Reynolds number chosen for this simulation was 150. The cases for Froude number 0.2 and gap ratio(h/D) between 0.25 and 5.00 were examined. At the specific Reynolds number, we study the effects of gap ratio on flow characteristics around a square cylinder by computing flow fields, force coefficients and Strouhal number.

  • Numerical investigation has been carried out for laminar flow ($Re{\leq}150$) past a square cylinder in cross freestream with an angle of attack. This study would be the first step towards understanding flow-induced forces on cylindrical structures under a strong gust of wind from the viewpoint of wind hazards. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose contour diagrams of drag/lift coefficients and Strouhal number (St) on an Re-Angle plane.

  • The effect of molecular parameters on the steady vortex behaviors in the inertial viscoelastic flow past a cylinder has been investigated. FENE-CR model was considered as a constitutive equation. A recently developed iterative solution method (Kim et al., (in press)) was found to be successfully applicable to the computation of inertial viscoelastic flows. The high-resolution computations were carried out to understand the detailed flow behaviors based on the efficient iterative solution method armed with ILU(0) type pre-conditioner and BiCGSTAB method. The discrete elastic viscous split stress-G/streamline upwind Petrov Galerkin (DEVSS-G/SUPG) formulation was adopted as a stabilization method. The vortex size decreased as elasticity increases. However, the vortex enhancement was also observed in the case of large extensibility, which means that the vortex behavior is strongly dependent upon the material parameters. The longitudinal gradient of normal stress was found to retard the formation of vortex, whereas the extensional viscosity played a role in the vortex enhancement. The present results are expected to be helpful for understanding the inertial vortex dynamics of viscoelastic fluids in the flow past a confined cylinder.

  • The effect of rotation on the unsteady laminar flaw past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. The numerical solutions for the 2D Navier-Stokes equation obtained, using two different numerical methods. One is an accurate spectral method and the other is a finite volume method(FVM). First, the flaw around a stationary circular cylinder is investigated to understand the basic phenomenon of flaw separation and bluff body wake. Next, the flow characteristics of the laminar flow, past a rotating circular cylinder, are investigated, using a FVM developed in this study. By the effect of rotation, it is seen that values of lift increase, while the values of mean drag decrease. Further, the criteria of angular velocity, at which the Karman vorteces disappear, is also determined.

  • The presence of a layer of vegetation which is relevant in river engineering or coastal engineering can modify the overall flow resistance, turbulent characteristics of flow. The patch of vegetation can be modelled and studied in a simple porous cylinder by previous researchers. Fully three dimensional Large Eddy Simulation is conducted in flow past a porous cylinder with a solid volume fraction (SVF) 0f 20%. The porous cylinder of diameter D contains 89 smaller cylinders which diameter is 0.048D in a regular staggered way. Reynolds number based on porous cylinder diameter D and the bulk velocity is 10,000. The large scale shedding is qualitatively similar to the one observed in the non-porous case (SVF=100%). The difference in the dynamics of the separated shear layer and the streamwise flow penetrating through the porous cylinder are compared with those in the non-porous cylinder. In particular, the wake billows form a larger distance from the back of the porous cylinder.
