The swirling flow in the draft tube of a Francis turbine can cause the flow instability and the cavitation surge and has a larger influence on hydraulic power operating system. In this paper, the cavitating flow with swirling flow in the diffuser was studied by the draft tube component experiment, the model Francis turbine experiment and the numerical simulation. In the component experiment, several types of fluctuations were observed, including the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour by the swirling flow. While the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour were suppressed by the aeration into the diffuser, the loss coefficient in the diffuser increased by the aeration. In the model turbine test the aeration decreased the efficiency of the model turbine by several percent. In the numerical simulation, the cavitating flow was studied using Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS) with particular emphasis on understanding the unsteady characteristics of the vortex rope structure. The generation and evolution of the vortex rope structures have been investigated throughout the diffuser using the iso-surface of vapor volume fraction. The pressure fluctuation in the diffuser by numerical simulation confirmed the cavitation surge observed in the experiment. Finally, this pressure fluctuation of the cavitation surge was examined and interpreted by CFD.
We conducted the three-dimensional fluid flow analysis in a Taylor reactor using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Taylor flow can be categorized into five regions according to Reynolds number, i.e., circular Couette flow (CCF), Taylor vortex flow (TVF), wavy vortex flow (WVF), modulated wavy vortex flow (MWVF), and turbulent Taylor vortex flow (TTVF), and we investigated the flow characteristics at each region. For each region, the shape, number and length of vortices were different and they influenced on the bypass flow. As a result, the Taylor vortex was found at TVF, WVF, MWVF and TTVF regions. The highest number of Taylor vortex was observed at TVF region, while the lowest at TTVF region. The numerical model was validated by comparing with the experimental data and the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental data.

The present work performs three-dimensional flow calculations based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) to investigate the flow field of a transonic rotor (NASA Rotor 37) at near-stall condition. It is found that the DES approach is likely to predict well the complex flow characteristics such as secondary vortex or turbulent flow phenomenon than RANS approach, which is useful to describe the flow mechanism of a transonic compressor. Especially, the DES results show improvement of predicting the flow field in the wake region and the model captures reasonably well separated regions compared to the RANS model. Besides, it is discovered that the three-dimensional vortical flows after the vortex breakdown from the rotor tip region are widely distributed and its vortex structures are clearly present. Near the rotor leading edge, a part of the tip leakage flows in DES solution spill over into next passage of the blade owing to the separation vortex flow and the backflow is clearly seen around the trailing edge of rotor tip. Furthermore, the DES solution shows strong turbulent eddies especially in the rotor hub, rotor tip section and the downstream of rotor trailing edge compared to the RANS solution.
The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex in a reacting and non-reacting methane-air jet flow were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. After fuel and air were developed entirely in computational domain, the single vortex was generated by an axisymmetric jet that was impulsed to emit a cold fuel. Through comparisons of single vortex in reacting and non-reacting jet flow, it was found that global dynamic behaviors and the mechanisms leading to the formation, transport processes of vortex ring were influenced significantly by heat release from reaction. In addition, the interaction between a single vortex and flame bulge generated by buoyance effect in a reacting jet flow was found.

The effect of molecular parameters on the steady vortex behaviors in the inertial viscoelastic flow past a cylinder has been investigated. FENE-CR model was considered as a constitutive equation. A recently developed iterative solution method (Kim et al., (in press)) was found to be successfully applicable to the computation of inertial viscoelastic flows. The high-resolution computations were carried out to understand the detailed flow behaviors based on the efficient iterative solution method armed with ILU(0) type pre-conditioner and BiCGSTAB method. The discrete elastic viscous split stress-G/streamline upwind Petrov Galerkin (DEVSS-G/SUPG) formulation was adopted as a stabilization method. The vortex size decreased as elasticity increases. However, the vortex enhancement was also observed in the case of large extensibility, which means that the vortex behavior is strongly dependent upon the material parameters. The longitudinal gradient of normal stress was found to retard the formation of vortex, whereas the extensional viscosity played a role in the vortex enhancement. The present results are expected to be helpful for understanding the inertial vortex dynamics of viscoelastic fluids in the flow past a confined cylinder.
One of the devices to prevent separated flow over a wing or a flap at high angle of attack is a vortex generator. In the present work, we numerically study the flow around a low-profile or micro vortex generator whose height is less than local boundary layer thickness which can delay separation with a minimum drag penalty owing to its very small wetted surface area. As a first step toward a parametric study to efficiently design this MVG flow control system, we simulate the flow around a single MVG on a flat plate. For the simulation, we employ OpenFOAM with Launder-Sharma ${\kappa}$-epsilon model. The analysis results are validated by comparing with experimental results of a rectangular MVG at an angle of attack of 10 degrees whose height is 20% of local boundary layer. Important results and aspects of this numerical study are discussed. We also simulate the flow around rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal MVGs and the results are compared
The efficiency of the flow mixed pump installed within the bell-mouth in the sump is reduced by the flow characteristics of around intakes. Strong submerged vorticies can be successfully suppressed by installing an AVD(anti-submerged vortex device) on the bottom of pump intake channel just below the bell-mouth. Sump model with AVD device basin is designed and the characteristics of submerged vortex is investigated in the flow field by numerical simulation. In this study, a commercial CFD code is used to predict the efficiency of the pump with the AVD installation in the pump station accurately.

A numerical approach based on a potential flow method is developed to simulate the unsteady interaction between propeller and rudder. In this approach, a panel method is used to solve the flow around the rudder and a vortex lattice method is used to solve the flow around the propeller, respectively. An iterative procedure is adopted to solve the interaction between propeller and rudder. The effects of one component on the other are evaluated by using induced velocities due to the other component at every time step. A fully unsteady wake alignment algorithm is implemented into the vortex lattice method to simulate the unsteady propeller flow. The Rosenhead-Moore core model is employed during the wake alignment procedure to avoid the singularities and instability. The Lamb-Oseen vortex model is adopted in the present method to decay the vortex strength around the rudder and to eliminate unrealistically high induced velocity. The present methods are applied to predict the performance of a cavitating horn-type rudder in the presence of a 6-bladed propeller. The predicted cavity patterns compare well with those observed from the experiments.

Combining Iwan-Blevin's model into the approximated form of the nonlinear model derived for the dynamic analysis of the riser system with the inclusion of internal flow, current-vortex model is developed to investigate the effect of internal flow on vortex-induced vibration due to inline current The riser system includes a steadly flow inside the pipe which is modeled as an extensible or inextensible tubular beam. Galerkin's finite element approximation are implemented to derive the matrix equation of equilibrium for the finite element system. The investigations of the effect of internal flow on vibration due to inline current are performed according to the change of various parameters such as top tension, infernal flow velocity. current velocity, and so on. It is found that the effect of internal flow on vibration due to vortex shedding can be controlled by the increase of top tension. However, careful consideration has to be given, in design point in order to avoid the resonance band occurding near vortex shedding frequency, particularly for the long riser.

Numerical simulation was applied to investigate the Taylor vortex flow inside the concentric cylinders with a constant radial temperature gradient. The reliability of numerical simulation method was verified by the experimental results of PIV. The radial velocity and temperature distribution in plain and 12-slit model at different axial locations were compared, and the heat flux distributions along the inner cylinder wall at different work conditions were obtained. In the plain model, the average surface heat flux of inner cylinder increased with the inner cylinder rotation speed. In slit model, the slit wall significantly changed the distribution of flow field and temperature in the annulus gap, and the radial flow was strengthen obviously, which promoted the heat transfer process at the same working condition.
