  • The cladding temperatures and axial mass distribution computed by MAAP5 were compared with their measured values in the test bundle of the Phebus Test FPT0. The computed cladding temperatures were in good agreed with the measured values in the pre-transient phase. In the transient heat-up phase, the computed temperatures were overestimated by the Baker-Just correlation in MAAP5, but the computed temperatures could simulate the subsequently measured values. The computed mass distribution in the axial direction was in qualitative agreement with the measured one for post-test fuel damage observations. The calculated flow areas of inner and outer regions in the test bundle were compared with the photographic observations. MAAP5 computed them at the height of 0.2 m where the molten pool formed was in qualitative agreement with the photographic observations. It was found that the remaining steam flow paths might be caused by the gas-liquid two-phase flow counter-current flow limitation.

  • Gas sparging is one of the techniques used to control the concentration polarization during ultrafiltration. In this work, the effects of gas sparging in stratified flow regime were investigated during gel layer controlling cross flow ultrafiltration in a rectangular channel. Synthetic solution of pectin was used as the gel forming solute. The liquid and gas flow rates were selected such that a stratified flow regime was prevalent in the channel. A mass transfer model was developed for this system to quantify the effects of gas flow rates on mass transfer coefficient (Sherwood number). The results were compared with the case of no gas sparging. Gas sparging led to an increase of mass transfer coefficient by about 23% in this case. The limitation of the developed model was also evaluated and it was observed that beyond a gas flow rate of 20 l/h, the model was unable to explain the experimental observation, i.e., the decrease in permeate flux with flow rate.

  • In order to incorporate correctly the large or local scale circulation in an atmospheric model, a nudging term is introduced into the equation of motion. The MM5 model was used to assess the meteorological values differences in each case, during ozone episode days in Gwangyang bay. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of horizontal and vertical flow fields according to the surface and vertical observation data assimilation by upper wind conditions. Therefore, we carried out several numerical experiments with various parameterization methods for nudging coefficient considering the upper wind conditions (synoptic or asynoptic condition). Nudging considering the synoptic and asynoptic nudging coefficient does have a clear advantage over dynamic initialization, therefore appropriate limitation of these nudging coefficient values on its upper wind conditions is necessary before making an assessment. Obviously, under the weak synoptic wind, there was apparent advantage associated with nudging coefficient by the regional difference. The accuracy for the prediction of the meteorological values has been improved by applying the appropriate PBL (Planetary Boundary Layer) limitation of circulation.

  • The experimental research was conducted to setup a performance prediction logic for the regenerative cooling system on a small scale liquid rocket engine using kerosene and LOX. Total heat flux of the combustion gas side was determined for the flow rate of the coolant, combustion pressure using the calorimeter thrust chamber. Based on the experimental investigation, a performance prediction scheme for the regenerative cooling system is setup in our own way. A performance prediction logic for the regenerative cooling system has been developed by the correction scheme of the combustion gas side. The key parameters determining the temperature limitation of the coolant are the mass flow rate of the coolant and the length of the combustion chamber and the nozzle. And the parameters to control the limitation of the usable wall temperature are the number of channels and wall thickness.

  • It is well known that an indirect methanol based fuel cell system imposes a performance limitation on the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) due to the reformer lag. An optional battery system can be used together with fuel cell to improve this performance limitation and it is called a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FCHEV) this paper first describes the configuration of FCHEV with explanation of the energy flow between subsystems. Mathematical modeling of each subsystem such as a fuel cell system, a battery system, a driving motor with the transmission are formulated and coded using Matlab/simulink software. It is illustrated by simulation results that fuel cell modeling yields appropriate stack voltage in order to get the required current quantity with varying hydrogen flow.

  • The $Li-O_2$ battery has been attracting much attention recently, due to its very high theoretical capacity compared with Li-ion chemistries. Nevertheless, several studies within the last few years revealed that Li-ion derived electrolytes based on alkyl carbonate solvents, which have been commonly used in the last 27 years, are irreversibly consumed at the $O_2$ electrode. Accordingly, more stable electrolytes are required capable to operate with both the Li metal anode and the $O_2$ cathode. Thus, due to their favorable properties such as non volatility, chemical inertia, and favorable behavior toward the Li metal electrode, ionic liquid-based electrolytes have gathered increasing attention from the scientific community for its application in $Li-O_2$ batteries. However, the scale-up of Li-$O_2$ technology to real application requires solving the mass transport limitation, especially for supplying oxygen to the cathode. Hence, the 'LABOHR' project proposes the introduction of a flooded cathode configuration and the circulation of the electrolyte, which is then used as an oxygen carrier from an external $O_2$ harvesting device to the cathode for freeing the system from diffusion limitation.

  • This study is aimed to analyze the effects of heat pipe shape on the heat transfer in solar collector with a axial grooved heat pipe. In the design of a heat pipe. two of the most important criteria to be met are the operating temperature range and the maximum heat transport capacity, When the operating temperature range is known and the working fluid has been selected, the maximum heat transport capacity depends strongly on capillary pressure and liquid flow. The heat transport capacity of the heat pipe will depend on the geometry of the heat pipe, the wick structure. the vapor channel shape. groove number. cooling temperature. condenser length and pipe diameter. So various shapes are used for mathematical models of two-phase flow in grooved heat pipe. From the results. the adequate groove shape and scale are presented by considering the heat transport and capillary limitation.

  • The fluvial phenomena in the bended natural river course are studied experimentally. Some theoretical and empirical conclusions were derived in prior to this study by some authors but the limitation of applicability of those results are not clearly known because of the sensitibitys of the flow regime in the reach. The main objective of this study is directed to evaluate the mechanism of sedimentation and the cross sectional changes in the equilibrium status. the most governing factor influenced to the cross sectional changes in the bended reach is the occurance of spiral flow. In this study, the streamlines and velocity distributions are checked at given interval by the hydraulic model to find out the place where spiral flow are existing under the various flow magnitudes.

  • In the present work, we have interests on the modification of parallel implemented with MPI(Message Passing Interface) programming method, 3-Dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equation solver to analyze the low-Reynolds number flow In order to accurate calculation aerodynamic coefficients in low-Reynolds number flow field, we modified the two-equation turbulence model. This paper describes the development and validation of a new two-equation model for the prediction of flow transition. It is based on Mentor's low Reynolds $\kappa-\omega$ model with modifications to include Total Stresses Limitation (TSL) and Separation Transition Trigger (STT)
