  • Numerical analysis of the three dimensional turbulent flow field in a complex valve shape is carried out to confirm the flow field whether the designed valve shape is good or not. The simulation of the incompressible flow in a constant flowrate control valve is performed by using the commercial code, FLUENT/UNS 6.0. The results of flow field show the designed valve has some problems, therefore these will be good data for new valve design.

Flow Analysis in the Tip Clearance of Axial Flow Rotor Using Finite-Element Large-Eddy Simulation Method (유한요소 LES법에 의한 축류 회전차 팁 틈새의 유동해석)

  • Flow characteristics in linear axial cascade have been studied using large eddy simulation(LES) based on finite element method(FEM) to investigate details of the leakage flow in the tip clearance of axial flow rotor. STAR-CD(FVM) and PAT-Flow(FEM) have been adopted to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for the simulation of the unsteady turbulent flow. Numerical results from the present study have been compared with the existing experimental results to investigate a tip clearance effect on velocity profile and static pressure distribution on blade surface at various spanwise positions. Both simulation results agree well with the experimental data. However, it has been shown that the results of finite-element large-eddy simulation agree better with experimental data than $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on finite volume method regarding the tip vortex geometry and static pressure distribution at the center of the tip vortex core. As a result of this study, it is shown that finite-element large-eddy simulation method can predict more exactly on the tip leakage vortex flow and behind flow field.

  • Unconventional structures are getting more popular in recent days. Large-span roofs are used for many structures, such as airports, stadiums, and conventional halls. Identifying the pressure distribution and wind load acting on those structures is essential. This paper offers a collaborative study of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests for assessing wind pressure distribution for a building with a combined slender curved roof. The hybrid turbulence model, Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES), simulates the open terrain turbulent flow field. The wind-induced local pressure coefficients on complex roof structures and the turbulent flow field around the structure were thus calculated based upon open terrain wind flow simulated with the FLUENT software. Local pressure measurements were investigated in a boundary layer wind tunnel simultaneous to the simulation to determine the pressure coefficient distributions. The results predicted by CFD were found to be consistent with the wind tunnel test results. The comparative study validated that the recommended IDDES model and the vortex method associated with CFD simulation are suitable tools for structural engineers to evaluate wind effects on long-span complex roofs and plan irregular buildings during the design stage.

  • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) has low operating temperature and high efficiency. And PEMFC consists of many components as bipolar plate, gas diffusion layer, membrane etc.. Flow-field in bipolar plate roles path for transporting reactants to membrane. Therefore a design of flow-field has an effect on PEMFC's performance. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed for comparing mixed multiple serpentine (MMS) flow-field and multiple serpentine (MS) flow-field. And we studied an effect according to change mixing region design in MMS flow-field. Finally the applicability of results is verified by performing CFD simulation about fixed MMS flow-field which is combined good designs.

  • This study aims to propose a new model axial flow fan which attachs centrifugal blades, and to investigate the effect of centrifugal blades on the performance improvement of new model axial flow fan. A numerical simulation has been conducted using STAR-CD commercial code to solve the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for high Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model. Numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the detail phenomenon in the flow field and performance characteristics of new model and normal model fan. Calculation results are compared with normal model's results to investigate which centrifugal blades effect on velocity profile and pressure distribution at various flow field positions. and calculation results show that new model fan can improve the performance of total pressure.

  • To predict diffusion and movement of k pollutants In coastal urban region a numerical simulation shouts be consider atmospheric flow field with land-sea breeze, mountain-valley wand and urban effects. In this study we used Lagrangian [article dispersion method In the atmospheric flow field of Pusan coastal region to depict diffusion and movement of the Pollutants emoted from particular sources and employed two grid system, one for large scale calculating region with the coarse mesh grid (CMG) and the other for the small region with the One mesh 914 (FMG). It was found that the dispersion pattern of the pollutants followed local circulation system in coastal urban area and wale air pollutants exhausted from Sasang moved Into Baekyang and Jang moutain, air pollutants from Janglim moved into Hwameong-dong region.

  • In this study, flow field measurement of the Pebble Bed Reactor(PBR) for the High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor(HTGR) was performed. Large number of pebbles in the core of PBR provides complicated flow channel. Due to the complicated geometries, numerical analysis has been intensively made rather than experimental observation. However, the justification of computational simulation by the experimental study is crucial to develop solid analysis of design method. In the present study, a wind tunnel installed with pebbles stacked was constructed and equipped with the Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). We designed the system scaled up to realize the room temperature condition according to the similarity. The PIV observation gave us stagnation points, low speed region so that the suspected high temperature region can be identified. With the further supplementary experimental works, the present system may produce valuable data to justify the Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulation method.

  • Combustor development requires high fidelity simulation capable of predicting recirculation zone (RZ), temperature field, and pollutant emission. Swirling flow is widely used in combustor for its benefits in efficient mixing and flame stabilization by RZ. Large eddy simulation (LES) is used to calculate swirling flow in an expanding pipe [1], and shows higher accuracy than RANS. Reactive flow modeling using LES and flamelet model is validated with experiments by Barlow et al. [4] and Masri et al. [3]. Finally, heat transfer simulation of Samsung Techwin's combustor liner is presented.

  • Recently, Inhabitants nearby the high embankment road have requested a civil complaint on the environmental deteriorations and economic harms. This study was carried out numerical simulation using the 3-D microclimate model 'Envi-met' in order to investigate the variations of a flow field and a temperature field at the road sections with a high embankment and a bridge. About the simulation of flow field, the wind field has changed due to the disturbance of airflow by a high embankment road considerably. And the wind velocity decreased in the whole of simulation space widely. But, the wind velocity and wind direction sited loose to the section of a bridge, relatively. In the results of a temperature field, the slight variations of temperature field were discovered by the disturb of the mixing flow from a high embankment road. These results indicate that the numerical simulation can provide useful information to minimize the disasters, such as traffic accidents and various microclimatic environments in the transportation projects.

  • A numerical analysis of electrochemical reaction and dynamics of the fluid flow in the channels of a DMFC separator was carried out by using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) code fluent(ver.6.0). From the simulation work, many valuable informations were obtained in terms of distributions of velocity, pressure, temperature, concentration and current density over the flow field. And it was possible to optimize the flow field structure by using the simulation results. The simulation work using the Cm code was found very helpful in analysing the phenomena occurring in the fuel cell and optimizing the structures of electrodes and flow field.
