  • Background: Bronchoscopy is a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool. However, the clinical use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) in adults with acute respiratory failure for diagnostic and invasive procedures has not been well evaluated. We present our experiences of well-tolerated diagnostic bronchoscopy as well as cases of improved saturation in hypoxaemic patients after a therapeutic bronchoscopic procedure. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data of hypoxaemic patients who had undergone bronchoscopy for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes from October 2015 to February 2017. Results: Ten patients (44-75 years of age) were enrolled. The clinical purposes of bronchoscopy were for diagnosis in seven patients and for intervention in three patients. For the diagnoses, we performed bronchoalveolar lavage in six patients. One patient underwent endobronchial ultrasonography with transbronchial needle aspiration of a lymph node to investigate tumour involvement. Patients who underwent bronchoscopy for therapeutic interventions had endobronchial mass or blood clot removal with cryotherapy for bleeding control. The mean saturation ($SpO_2$) of pre-bronchoscopy in room air was 84.1%. The lowest and highest mean saturation with HFNC during the procedure was 95% and 99.4, respectively. The mean saturation in room air post-bronchoscopy was 87.4%, which was 3.3% higher than the mean room air $SpO_2$ pre-bronchoscopy. Seven patients with diagnostic bronchoscopy had no hypoxic event. Three patients with interventional bronchoscopy showed improvement in saturation after the procedure. Bronchoscopy was well tolerated in all 10 cases. Conclusion: This study suggests that the use of HFNC in hypoxaemic patients during diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy procedures has clinical effectiveness.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of wind speed and direction on building fires using GIS and a CFD model. We conducted numerical simulations for a fire event that occurred at an apartment in Ulsan on October 8, 2020. For realistic simulations, we used the profiles of wind speeds and directions and temperatures predicted by the local data assimilation and prediction system (LDAPS). First, using the realistic boundary conditions, we conducted two numerical simulations (a control run, CNTL, considered the building fire and the other assumed the same conditions as CNTL except for the building fire). Then, we conducted the additional four simulations with the same conditions as CNTL except for the inflow wind speeds and direction. When the ignition point was located on the windward of the building, strong updraft induced by the fire had a wide impact on the building roof and downwind region. The evacuation floor (15th floor) played a role to spread fire to the downwind wall of the building. The weaker the wind speed, the narrower fire spread around the ignition point, but the higher the flame above the building reaches. When the ignition point was located on the downwind wall of the building, the flame didn't spread to the upwind wall of the building. The results showed that wind speed and direction were important for the flow and temperature (or flame) distribution around a firing building.

  • This study was carried out to analyze how the flow and water quality of the Sangsa Lake (juam control basin) change according to future climate change and what countermeasures are needed. Aquatic Ecosystem Model) was used in conjunction. As climate change scenarios, RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios of AR5 (5th Assessment Report) according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were used. For the climate change scenario, detailed data on the Sangsa Lake basin were used by the Korea Meteorological Administration, and after being evaluated as a correction and verification process for the 10-year period from 2012 to 2021, the present, 2025-2036, 2045- The summer period from June to August and the winter period from December to February were analyzed separately for each year by dividing it into 2056 and 2075-2086. RCP 8.5 was higher than RCP 4.5 as an arithmetic mean for the flow rate of the watershed of the superior lake for the entire simulation period, and TN and TP also showed a tendency to be higher at RCP 4.5. However, in RCP 8.5, the outflow of pollutants decreased during the dry season and the outflow of pollutants increased during the summer, indicating that the annual pollutant outflow was concentrated during the flood season, and it is analyzed that countermeasures are needed.

  • Lane management with a central variable lane(s) (or reversible lane) where the traffic flow is temporarily reversed in one or more lanes during peak periods has been evaluated as an effective strategy to alleviate congestion caused by tidal traffic flows. However, due to traffic safety issues, such a movable barrier system can be considered as an alternative to supplement the existing its operation facilities such as static and/or dynamic signs and special pavement markings. In addition, when combined with a bus exclusive lane strategy, its effectiveness could be greatly increased. The objective of this study is to propose a feasibility analysis procedure for operational strategies of a bus-exclusive lanes using a barrier transfer system (BTS) for urban expressways. To this end, a case study was conducted on two urban expressways on the west side of the Han River in Seoul. As a result, temporary operation during rush hour in the morning was found to be most effective. The results presented in this study are expected to serve as a basis for establishing bus-exclusive lane operation strategies using similar systems in the future.

  • To reduce the damage of extreme flooding caused by climate change and to create flood mitigation sections in a nature-friendly riparian area, it is necessary to restore the floodplain area by referring to the past floodplain section of the current inland waterfront area before the levee was built. This study proposed a method of selecting a location for floodplain restoration using old maps of the Geum River study section and analyzed the effect of flood level reduction through unsteady flow numerical simulations using the floodplain as a flood mitigation space. As a result of analyzing changes in the river areas using old maps, the river section was estimated to gradually reduce by 27.8% (1,059,380 m2) in 2020 compared to 1919, and it was found to have an effective storage capacity of 2,200,868 m3 when restored to offline storage. The flood level and discharge control effects analyzed based on HEC-RAS unsteady flow simulation were 16 cm and 219.01 m3/s, respectively, in the downstream cross-section. In the numerical simulation in this paper, the flood mitigation space was applied as an offline reservoir. The effect of reducing the flood level may differ if levee retreat/relocation is applied.

  • This research explores the potential application of Liquid Red Mud(LRM), a byproduct of industrial processes, in the construction sector. We neutralized LRM(pH 10-12) using nitric acid, aiming to understand its viability in construction applications. The study involved substituting LRM(pH 7-8) in mortar formulations, varying by cement type. We assessed the properties of these mixtures by measuring flow, setting time, and compressive strength. Additionally, X-ray Diffraction(XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) analyses were conducted to examine the chemical properties. Results indicated a reduction in flow value for LRM and LN(neutralized LRM) compared to the control (Plain ) across different cement types. The setting times(initial and final) for LRM and LN were notably shorter than Plain. In compressive strength tests, LRM replaced with slag cement showed enhanced initial strength, though long-term strength gains were marginal across different cement types. SEM analysis revealed distinct voids in Plain and LN, with LRM exhibiting a fibrous microstructure. XRD patterns in SN(slag neutralized) resembled those in OR(original red mud) and ON(original neutralized), with a notable peak at a 2θ value of 22°. The study concludes that unneutralized LRM, when substituted for slag cement in mortar, yields superior initial strength compared to its neutralized counterpart.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the regulation relationship of Ten-eleven translocation 1 (Tet1) in DNA demethylation and the proliferation of primordial germ cells (PGCs) in chickens. Methods: siRNA targeting Tet1 was used to transiently knockdown the expression of Tet1 in chicken PGCs, and the genomic DNA methylation status was measured. The proliferation of chicken PGCs was detected by flow cytometry analysis and cell counting kit-8 assay when activation or inhibition of Wnt4/β-catenin signaling pathway. And the level of DNA methylation and hisotne methylation was also tested. Results: Results revealed that knockdown of Tet1 inhibited the proliferation of chicken PGCs and downregulated the mRNA expression of Cyclin D1 and cyclin-dependent kinase 6 (CDK6), as well as pluripotency-associated genes (Nanog, PouV, and Sox2). Flow cytometry analysis confirmed that the population of PGCs in Tet1 knockdown group displayed a significant decrease in the proportion of S and G2 phase cells, which meant that there were less PGCs entered the mitosis process than that of control. Furthermore, Tet1 knockdown delayed the entrance to G1/S phase and this inhibition was rescued by treated with BIO. Consistent with these findings, Wnt/β-catenin signaling was inactivated in Tet1 knockdown PGCs, leading to aberrant proliferation. Further analysis showed that the methylation of the whole genome increased significantly after Tet1 downregulation, while hydroxyl-methylation obviously declined. Meanwhile, the level of H3K27me3 was upregulated and H3K9me2 was downregulated in Tet1 knockdown PGCs, which was achieved by regulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Conclusion: These results suggested that the self-renewal of chicken PGCs and the maintenance of their characteristics were regulated by Tet1 mediating DNA demethylation through the activation of Wnt4/β-catenin signaling pathway.

  • Recently, most of the rivers in Korea are experiencing various problems in dimension and river environment, such as expansion of stable area where disturbance does not occur during flood, increase of excessive trees in river channel, fixation of river channel, reduction of sand bar. When the soil supplied by the flood is deposited in the river, the plant is settled in the formed terrain, and when another disturbance of the scale that does not erode there occurs after the plant is settled, the river gradually grows and the vegetation zone is formed there. In particular, in terms of river management, river forestation and river aggradation are objects that must be managed because they are disadvantageous in terms of flood control by lowering the flow rate and raising the water level. Therefore, in this study, the area of vegetation occupied by the year of sandbar was analyzed in the process of river aggradation in Jang-Hang wetland. In addition, the correlation between the growth of Jang-Hang wetland was analyzed through the analysis of the flow rate and the flooding frequency that directly affect the growth of Jang-Hang wetland. Through this, the management plan of Jang-Hang wetland, which is registered in Ramsar Wetland but has been river forestation and is undergoing river aggradation, was proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of the road network according to the penetration rate of autonomous vehicles (AV) of Level 4 or higher and the change in traffic volume. First, prior studies related to vehicle control variables of AV were reviewed, and future traffic demand in 2040, which is predicted to have a 50 % market share of AVs, was reflected in the simulation analysis. In addition, the change in traffic flow of continuous and intermittent flows was analyzed by increasing the AV market penetration rate and traffic volume of passenger cars, trucks, and buses by 25 % step by step from 0 to 100 %. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the travel time increased as the traffic increased, and the pattern of decreasing the travel time due to the increase in the share of AVs, that is, the development of technology, can also be confirmed. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the traffic speed showed a trend of increasing as the share of AVs increased. In this study, it was confirmed that the law of diminishing marginal rate of substitution (MRS) was satisfied by calculating the MRS according to the combination of traffic volume and speed while increasing the market penetration rate of AVs. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the convexity of the indifference curve was also satisfied in both intermittent and continuous traffic flow environments.
