  • As the wireless internet grows exponentially, the recent trend has an increasing demand for wireless network and multimedia services. RTP is used to support the multimedia communication over the Internet and it supports the flexibility and adaptability over a wide range. However, RTP has a limitation that it cannot support end-to-end QoS guarantee in a wireless home network which has low throughput and high delay. In this paper, we propose the architecture of a real-time multimedia communication and design and implement the hybrid flow control in the architecture. The hybrid flow control mechanism is based on modified AIMD using metrics such as the network state information and the user properties. We implement the porposed flow control using JMF to evaluate the performance of the proposed flow control. The experimental results show that the proposed flow control has better performance than the AIMD.

  • In this paper, separated flow characteristics is studied using the RANS(Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes) modeling. The analysis is performed for the NASA's hump configuration which is the combination of a flat plate and a hump. This configuration was used in NASA's flow control workshop and it was one of validation cases for RANS and LES simulations. The separation occurs at the 65% of model length where a slot is positioned for the flow control. No flow control case and steady suction case are studied using RANS modeling. The Spalart-Allmaras model and the SST(Shear Stress Transport) model are applied and their accuracy are compared. To correlate CFD analysis with experimental data, the optimal boundary condition was investigated and the effect of a cavity around the slot is studied for the no flow case.

  • The pump control valve is a butterfly valve that has an eccentric rotating axis. It is not only used as a butterfly valve to control the flow rate or pressure, but also as a check valve to prevent backward flow. A new design method of eccentric rotating axis is proposed to design the valve. The height of the rotating axis is determined through flow field analysis. A general purpose of computational fluid dynamics software system, Fluent is used to simulate the fluid flow. Flow field analysis is performed for various heights of the rotating axis and different opening angles of the valve. A characteristic function is defined for estimating the flow characteristics based on the results of flow field analysis. The characteristic function is defined in order to determine the height of the rotating axis. An optimization problem with a characteristic function is formulated to determine the amount of eccentricity. The height of the Totaling axis of the valve is determined through solving the optimization problem.

  • Shunt valves used to treat patient with hydrocephalus were numerically simulated to investigate influence of pressure pulsation on their flow control characteristics. We modeled flow orifice through the shunt valve and imposed pulsating pressure and valve diaphragm movement to compute flow through the valve. The results of our study indicated that flow rates increased more than 40% by introducing pressure pulsation and diaphragm movement on the shunt valve. Our results demonstrate the pressure-flow control characteristics of shunt valves implanted above human brain may be quite different from those obtained by syringe pump test just after manufacture that induces uniform pressure.

  • This study was focused on establishing the concepts of the instream flow to prevent the problems for the conceptual ambiguity and the difference in the instream flow estimation methods. The average drought flow is defined as the flow required to guarantee the minimum function of the river such as prevention of drying. The environmental control flow is defined as the flow required to control optimal river environment, the flow required for navigation, prevention of sea water-intrusion, protection of river management facilities, conservation of water Quality, fishing, prevention of river mouth closure, control of groundwater level, protection of animals and plants, and landscape. The average drought flow was obtained by flow duration analysis for the natural flows in the Han River at Indo-Bridge gaging station. When considering the 9 factors related to environment conservation, the conservation of water quality was proved to be most important. The pollutants for the river flows were estimated and the water qualities were forecasted. After comparing the water qualities in the future and water quality standards, there quired optimal dilution flow was estimated. The average drought flow and environmental control flow are all non-consumptive flows. Therefore larger flow between them, i.e., Max. (average drought flow, environmental control flow) can be the instream flow. The river management flow can be added to the flows for water utilization in the downstream. The results from this study are expected to be very helpful in the systematic river management on the other main rivers in Korea.

  • In this study, we attempted to develop a watershed runoff index subject to main control points by dividing the Geum River basin into 14 sub-basins. The Yongdam multipurpose dam Daecheong multipurpose dam and Gongju gage station were selected to serve as the main control points of the Geum River basin, and the observed flow of each control point was calculated by the discharge rating curve, whereas the simulated flow was estimated using the Rainfall Runoff Forecasting System (RRFS), user-interfaced software developed by the Korea Water Corporation, based on the Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. This study consisted of the daily unit observed flow and the simulated flow of the accumulated moving average flow by daily, 5-days, 10-days, monthly, quarterly and annually, and normal monthly/annually flow. We also performed flow duration analysis for each of the accumulated moving average and the normal monthly/annually flows by unit period, and abundant flow, ordinary flow, low flow and drought flow estimated by each flow duration analysis were utilized as watershed runoff index by main control points. Further, as we determined the current flow by unit period and the normal monthly/annually flow through the drought and flood flow analysis subject to each flow we were able to develop the watershed runoff index in a system that can be used to determine the abundance and scarcity of the flow at the corresponding point.

  • Prandtl-Meyer expansion flow with homogeneous condensation is investigated experimentally and by numerical computations. The steady and unsteady periodic behaviors of the diabatic shock wave due to the latent heat released by condensation are considered with a view of technical application to the condensing flow through steam turbine blade passages. A passive control method using a porous wall and cavity underneath is applied to control the diabatic shock wave. Two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes with the nucleation rate equation are numerically solved using a third-order TVD (Total Variation Diminishing) finite difference scheme. The computational results reproduce the measured static pressure distributions in passive and no passive Prandtl-Meyer expansion flows with condensation. From both the experimental and computational results, it is found that the magnitude of steady diabatic shock wave can be considerably reduced by the present passive control method. For no passive control, it is found that the diabatic shock wave due to the heat released by condensation oscillates periodically with a frequency of 2.40㎑. This unsteady periodic motion of the diabatic shock wave can be completely suppressed using the present passive control method.

  • Intravenous (IV) injection is widely used to supply Ringer solution directly into a vein in hospital. Generally, a passive injection method has been used, which causes the inconsistent flow rate of fluid and inappropriate control of injection time by a patient. It leads to an unnecessary nurse's overwork and decrement of IV injection's effect. To solve these problems, flow control infusion pumps have been developed. But because of relatively heavy weight and high price, its usage has been limited. In the present study, a new automatic IV injection system is developed. It is installed with a small pressing mechanism driven by a small electric motor to regulate the flow rate by pressing tube. Proportional integral derivative (PID) feedback control algorithm is applied to control the electric motor. The system is smaller in size and uses lower power than the existing commercial product. The newly developed system is also installed with networking capability, which enables monitoring the status of several automatic IV injection system at the same time.

  • Sensors need to be implanted to obtain necessary information for LVAS (Left Ventricular Assist System) operations. Size of the sensors can prevent them from being implanted in a patient and reliabilities of the sensors are questionable for a long term use. In this wort we utilize a developed pump model to estimate flow and pressure difference across the pump without implanted sensors and present a method to obtain the physiological variables as aorta pressure and left ventricle pressure from the pump model and pulsatility of flow estimate or pressure difference estimate. These estimated variables can be used for LVAS control as an index or indices.

  • Diaphragm type noncontact automatic control valve is a valve for controling acidic PR(Photo Resist) liquid used in the semiconductor process. PR is photosensitive liquid that changes phases depending on light transmittance. PR is very toxic and expensive; the purpose of this paper is to address methods that prevent loss due to leaks. The design of noncontact precise automatic control valve is expected to play an important role in controlling fluid flow, therefore influencing energy conservation and environmental improvement. In this paper, diaphragm type automatic control valve's part design, assembly and simulation are introduced. Also, through the analysis of fluid flow the valve's internal velocity, pressure, and turbulent intensity are interpreted. This paper proposes to contribute to the improvement of the valve's performance.
