Measurements results of flow-structure-interactions (FSI) of an air-lifted body are introduced. An adaptive stereoscopic-PIV system has been constructed for the measurements of the air-lifted body. The measurement system consists of two cameras and optical sensors. The flow characteristics around a lifted cylinder body(length=60mmm, diameter =10mm, polystyrene) in the swirling flow field in a vertical pipe (length=600mm, inner diameter=) are investigated by the use of the constructed adaptive stereoscopic-PIV system. The images of the two cameras were used for the analysis of the flow fields around the floated cylinder body. The images of the cylinder body captured by the two cameras were used for the analyses of its motions. Four optical sensors (LED) were used for the detection of the postures of the freely-lifted cylinder body. The FSI analyses have been carried out to find the physical conditions at which the floating body is stabilized with its upright postures.
Negative-differential conductance (NDC) characteristics as well as negative-differential trans-conductance (NDT) characteristics have been observed in the room temperature I-V characteristics of Field-induced Inter-band Tunneling Effect Transistors (FITETs). These characteristics have been explained with inter-band tunneling physics, from which, inter-band tunneling current flows when the energy bands of degenerately doped regions align, and it does not flow when they don't. FITET is an SOI device and the body region is not directly connected to the external terminal. Therefore, Fermi energy in the body region is determined by electrical coupling among four regions - gate, source, drain and substrate. So, a quasi Fermi energy of the majority carriers in the floating body region can be changed by external voltages, and this causes the energy band movements in the body region, which determine whether the energy bands between degenerately doped junctions aligns or not. This is a key point for an explanation of NDT and NDC characteristics. In this paper, a quasi Fermi energy movement in the floating body region of FITET was investigated by a device simulation. This result was applied for the description of relation between quasi Fermi energy in the body region and external gate bias voltage.
The second-order steady horizontal force and vertical moment are derived for a freely-floating body in water of finite depth. Momentum relations are used in terms of the Kochin function in the fluid region far from the body. The general results look very similar to those for deep water. The water depth is formally reflected in terms of the ratio between the phase and group velocities of incident waves. Computations are made for a Series 60 hull($C_B=0.6$) and are compared with the corresponding results of deep water. It is shown that the vertical drift moment for slender ships becomes completely free from water depth when the wave-ship length ratio is taken as parameter.
This paper introduces a unified theory for the radiation problem of adjacent multiple floating bodies. The particular case of interest is the multiple slender bodies that their centerlines are parallel. The infinite-and finite-depth unified theories for the single-body problem are extended to solve each sub-problem of multiple bodies. The present method is valid for deep water and moderate water depth, and applicable for individually floating bodies as well as multimaran-type vehicles. For the validation of the present method, the heave and pitch hydrodynamic coefficients for two adjacent ships are compared with the results of a three-dimensional method, and an excellent agreement is shown. The application includes the hydrodynamic coefficients and motion RAOs of four trimarans which have different longitudinal and transverse arrangements for sidehulls.
The motion behaviors including hydrodynamic interaction and mechanical coupling effects on multiple-body floating platforms are simulated by using a time domain hull/mooring/riser coupled dynamics analysis program. The objective of this study is to evaluate off-diagonal hydrodynamic interaction effects and mechanical coupling effects on tandem moored FPSO and shuttle taker motions. In the multiple-body floating platforms interaction, hydrodynamic coupling effects with waves and mechanical coupling effects through the connectors should be considered. Thus, in this study, the multiple-body platform motions are calculated by Combined Matrix Method (CMM) as well as Separated Matrix Method (SMM). The advantage of the combined matrix method is that it can include all the 6Nx6N full hydrodynamic and mechanical interaction effects among N bodies. Whereas, due to the larger matrix size, the calculation time of Combined Matrix Method (CMM) is longer than the Separated Matrix Method (SMM). On the other hand, Separated Matrix Method (SMM) cannot include the off-diagonal 6x6 hydrodynamic interaction coefficients although it can fully include mechanical interactions among N bodies. To evaluate hydrodynamic interaction and mechanical coupling effects, tandem moored FPSO and shuttle tanker is simulated by Combined Matrix Method (CMM) and Separated Matrix Method (SMM). The calculation results give a good agreement between Combined Matrix Method (CMM) and Separated Matrix Method (SMM). The results show that the Separated Matrix Method (SMM) is more efficient for tandem moored FPSO and shuttle tanker. In the numerical calculation, the hydrodynamic coefficients are calculated from a 3D diffraction/radiation panel program WAMIT, and wind and current forces are generated by using the respective coefficients given in the OCIMF data sheet.
Targeting a floating wave and offshore wind hybrid power generation system (FWWHybrid) designed in the Republic of Korea, this study examines the impact of the interaction, with multiple wave energy converters (WECs) placed on the platform, on platform motion. To investigate how the motion of WECs affects the behavior of the FWWHybrid platform, it was numerically compared with a scenario involving a 'single-body' system, where multiple WECs are constrained to the platform. In the case of FWWHybrid, because the platform and multiple WECs move in response to waves simultaneously as a 'multi-body' system, hydrodynamic interactions between these entities come into play. Additionally, the power take-off (PTO) mechanism between the platform and individual WECs is introduced for power production. First, the hydrostatic/dynamic coefficients required for numerical analysis were calculated in the frequency domain and then used in the time domain analysis. These simulations are performed using the extended HARP/CHARM3D code developed from previous studies. By conducting regular wave simulations, the response amplitude operator (RAO) for the platform of both single-body and multi-body scenarios was derived and subsequently compared. Next, to ascertain the difference in response in the real sea environment, this study also includes an analysis of irregular waves. As the floating body maintains its position through connection to a catenary mooring line, the impact of the slowly varying wave drift load cannot be disregarded. To assess the influence of the 2nd-order wave exciting load, irregular wave simulations were conducted, dividing them into cases where it was not considered and cases where it was included. The analysis of multi-degree-of-freedom behavior confirmed that the action of multiple WECs had a substantial impact on the platform's response.

This paper proposes a dual lifting and its cooperative control system with two different kinds of floating cranes. The Mega-erection and Giga-erection in the ship building are used to handle heavier and wider blocks and modules as ships and off-shore platforms are enlarged. However, there is no equipment to handle such Tera-blocks. In order to overcome the limit on performance of existing floating cranes, the dual lifting is proposed in this research. In the dual lifting, two floating cranes are well-coordinated to add up the lift capabilities of both cranes without any loss such that virtually a single crane is lifting, maneuvering and unloading. Two main constraints for the dual lifting are as follows: First, two barges of floating cranes should be constrained as a rigid body not to cause a relative motion between two barges and main hooks of the two cranes should be controlled as main hooks of a single crane. In order words, it is necessary to develop the cooperative control of two floating cranes in order to sustain a center of gravity of the module and minimize the tilting angle during the lifting and unloading by the two floating cranes. Two floating cranes are handled as a master-slave system. The master crane is able to gather information about all working conditions and make a decision to control the individual hook speed, which communicates the slave crane by TCP/IP. The developed control system has been embedded in the real floating crane systems and the dual lifting has been demonstrated five times at SHI shipyard in 2015. The moving angles of the lifting module are analyzed and verified to be suitable for hoisting control. It is verified that the dual lifting can be applied for many heavier and wider blocks and modules to shorten the construction time of ships and off-shore platforms.
In this paper, in order to analyze the dynamic response of a floating crane when it lifts a heavy cargo, the boom of the floating crane is considered as an elastic beam. The boom is divided into elements based on finite element formulation and the floating frame of reference formulation and nodal coordinates are employed to model the boom as a flexible body. As an extension of the previous study, in order to consider spatial motion in waves, the coupled equations of motions of the 6 degree of freedom (DOF) floating crane and 6 DOF cargo are developed based on the flexible multibody system dynamics. The 3 dimensional deformation of the elastic boom is considered with 18 DOF. The dynamic simulation of the floating crane and the cargo is performed under regular wave conditions with various cargo weights. Finally, the effects of the elastic boom on lifting cargo are discussed by comparing the simulation results between the elastic boom and a rigid boom.
In this paper, a possibility of controlling the motion of a floating wind turbine with the tuned liquid damper(TLD) is numerically investigated. First, motion of the scale model of a floating wind turbine without the TLD is predicted and its results are compared to the measured data. There are reasonably good agreements between two results, which confirms validity of the present numerical methods. Then, the effect of TLD is quantitatively assessed by comparing the prediction results for the floating wind turbine with and without the TLD. It is shown that the motion of the scale model derived by external forces can be reduced by using the TLD. On a basis of this result, a multi-layer TLD is proposed to generate larger reaction force of the TLD at the fixed target frequency. The motions of the scale model with the multi-layer TLDs are computed and compared with that of the single-layer TLD. It is shown that the multi-layer TLD generate stronger reaction force and thus more reduce the motion of the floating body than the single-layer TLD.
