  • The objective of this study is to minimize the weight of a damped anisotropic roto-bearing system considering whirl natural frequency and stability. The system is modeled as an assemblage of rigid disks, flexible shafts and discrete bearings. The system design variables are the crosssectional areas of shaft elements and the properties of bearings. To analyze the system, the polynomial method which is derived by rearranging the calculations performed by a transfer matrix method is adopted. For the optimization, the optimization software IDOL (Integrated Design Optimization Library) which is based on the Augmented Lagrange Multiplier (ALM) method is employed. Also, an analytical design sensitivity analysis of the system is used for high accuracy and efficiency. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed optimal design program incorporating analysis, design sensitivity analysis, and optimization modules, a damped anisotropic rotor-bearing system is optimized to obtain 34$ weight reduction.

  • This research is concerned with the derivation of equations of motion for a slewing beam and the application of input shaper to the bang-bang control to achieve vibration suppression. When a uniform beam with a tip mass rotates about the axis perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates. In this paper, we used the input shaper for the maneuvering control to suppress vibrations. The maneuvering control which can achieve a minimum-time control is a bang-bang control. The input-shaped bang-bang maneuvering is used to suppress vibrations both theoretically and experimentally. The slewing beam experiment is not an easy subject because of the inherent damping existing inside the rotor. We propose the use of a negative damping to eliminate the rotor damping. Numerical and experimental results show that the input-shaper can be effectively used for the vibration suppression of a slewing beam.

  • Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor arrays can be used to monitor the mechanical behavior of the large composite structures such as wind turbine rotor blades and aircrafts. However, brittle FBG sensors, especially multiplexed FBG sensors are easily damaged when they are installed in the flexible structures. As a protection of brittle FBG sensors, epoxy packaged FBG sensors have been presented in this paper. Finite element analysis and experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of adhesives, packaging materials and the bonding layer thickness on the strain transmission. Two types of epoxy were used for packaging FBG sensors and the sensor probes were attached with various bonding layer thickness. It was observed that thin bonding layer with high elastic modulus ratio of the adhesive to packaging provided good strain transmission. However, the strain transmission was significantly decreased when elastic modulus of the adhesive was much lower than the packaged FBG sensor probe's one.

  • This paper presents a method to analyze the unbalance response of a high speed polygon mirror scanner motor supported by sintered metal bearing and flexible structures by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method considering the asymmetry of the gyroscopic effect and sintered metal bearing. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors are calculated by solving the eigenvalue problem and the adjoint eigenvalue problem by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The decoupled equations of motion can be obtained from global finite element motion equations by using the orthogonal relation between the right eigenvectors and left eigenvectors. The decoupled equations of motion are used to analyze the unbalance response of a high speed polygon mirror scanner motor. The validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated unbalance response with the experimental results.

  • This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts tue vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.
