Using a flexible rotating beam test bed, experimental verification of a flexible multibody dynamic simulations for a rotating beam model has been carried out. The test bed consists of a flexible arm, harmonic driver reducer, AC servo motor and DSP board with PC. The mechanical ports of the test bed has been designed using 3D CAD program. For the simulation model, mass and moment of inertia of each part of the flexible rotating beam test bed are also obtained from 3D CAD model. In the flexible multibody dynamic simulations, the substructuring model has been established to capture nonlinear effects of the flexible rotating beam. Through the experimental verification, substructuring model provides better results than those from the linear model in the high speed rotation.

In this paper , a state space model for flexible beam is presented using the assumed-modes approach. The state space equation is derived for a flexible beam in which one end is connected to a motor and is driven by a torque equation and the other end is free. Many of the transfer function proposed thus far use the torque to the flexible beam as the input and the tip deflection of the flexible beam as the output. The Technique for the analysis and synthesis of the dual-input describing function(DIDF) is introduced here and the construction of a non-linear compensator, based on this technique, is proposed. This non-linear compensator, properly connected in the direct path of a closed-loop linear or non-linear control system. The above non-linear network is used to compensate linear and non-linear systems for instability, limit cycles, low speed of response and static accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through computer simulation and experimental results.
Many of today´s robot are required to perform tasks which demand a high level of accuracy in end-effector positioning. Those rigid robots are very inefficient and slow because its have large and heavy links, In an attempt to solve these problems, a robots using flexible beam were created. But the single-link flexible beam is infinite-dimensional system. Many researchers have proposed controlling such a beam an approximated model consisting of a finite a number of models. In this paper, we start by deriving the analytic model for the dynamics of general single-link beam, and a controller is designed for flexible beam with integral type servo system bases of the linear matrix inequality (LM) technique. To the end, simulation results show that a designed controller guarantees affective vibration control the single-link flexible beam.

A very flexible beam can be used to model various types of continuous mechanical parts such as cables and wires. In this paper, the dynamic properties of a very flexible beam, included in a multibody system, are analyzed using absolute nodal coordinates formulation, which is based on finite element procedures, and the general continuum mechanics theory to represent the elastic forces. In order to consider the dynamic interaction between a continuous large deformable beam and a rigid multibody system, a combined system equations of motion is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. Using the derived system equation, a computation method for the dynamic stress during flexible multibody simulation is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and its reliability is verified by a commercial program NASTRAN. This method is significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics models can be unified into one numerical system. In addition, to analyze a multibody system including a very flexible beam, formulations for the sliding joint between a very deformable beam and a rigid body are derived using a non-generalized coordinate, which has no inertia or forces associated with it. In particular, a very flexible catenary cable on which a multibody system moves along its length is presented as a numerical example.

A flexible rotating beam test bed has been developed for experimental verification of flexible rotating beam dynamics and vibration. It consists of a flexible arm, harmonic driver reducer, ac servo motor and DSP board with PC. To capture the motion induced stiffening effects of the flexible rotating beam, substructuring model has been established in multibody dynamics simulation. Substructuring model provides better results comparing with experimental data.
A mathematical model for the nonlinear dynamics of a rotating beam with flexible root attached to a rotating hub with elastic foundation is developed. The model is developed based on the large planar and flexural deformation theory and the potential energy method to account for axial shortening due to bending deformation. In addition the exact nonlinear curvature is used in the system potential energy. The Lagrangian dynamics and the assumed mode method is used to derive the nonlinear coupled equations of motion hub rotation, beam tip deflection and hub horizontal and vertical displacements. The derived nonlinear model is simulated numerically and the results are presented and discussed for the effect of root flexibility, hub stiffness, torque type, torque period and excitation frequency and amplitude on the dynamic behavior of the rotating beam-hub and on its stability.

This paper presents a reduction method for a straight-line path error of a flexible beam deploying from a rotating rigid hub. Previous studies discussed about only vibration phenomena of flexible beams deploying from rotating hubs; however, this study investigates a vibration reduction of a rotating beam with variable length. The equation of motion and associated boundary conditions are derived for a flexible beam deploying from a rotating rigid hub, and then they are transformed to a variational equation. By applying the Galerkin method, the discretized equations are obtained from the variational equation. Based on the discretized equations, the dynamic responses of a rotating/deploying beam are analyzed when the beam end has a straight line motion. A reduction method for the trajectory error is proposed, using the average length of a rotating/deploying beam. It is shown that the proposed method is able to reduce the residual vibration of a rotating/deploying beam.
In this paper, linear buckling analysis of a curved sandwich beam with a flexible core is investigated. Derivation of equations for face sheets is accomplished via the classical theory of curved beam, whereas for the flexible core, the elasticity equations in polar coordinates are implemented. Employing the von-Karman type geometrical non-linearity in strain-displacement relations, nonlinear governing equations are resulted. Linear pre-buckling analysis is performed neglecting the rotation effects in pre-buckling state. Stability equations are concluded based on the adjacent equilibrium criterion. Considering the movable simply supported type of boundary conditions, suitable trigonometric solutions are adopted which satisfy the assumed edge conditions. The critical uniform load of the beam is obtained as a closed-form expression. Numerical results cover the effects of various parameters on the critical buckling load of the curved beam. It is shown that, face thickness, core thickness, core module, fiber angle of faces, stacking sequence of faces and openin angle of the beam all affect greatly on the buckling pressure of the beam and its buckled shape.

An approach to the simultaneous optimal design of structure and control system for large free-free flexible beam is presented. The flexible beam is modeled by the finite element method. And the reduced model of small degree of freedom is constructed by use of modal analysis. The tapered beam is considered so that the number of design variables is not dependent on the increasing number of finite elements. The width of several points of tapered beam and control gain are taken as design variables. The shape of beam and control gain are optimized simultaneously for the minimum weight of total structure including control system subject to the constraints of the magnitude of displacement of beam. It is shown that the simultaneous optimal design of structure and control systems is indeed useful.
In this paper, applications of multilayer neural networks to control of flexible robot beam are considered. The multilayer nerual networks can be used to approximate any continuous function to a desired degree of accuracy and the weights are updated by Gradient Method. When a flexible beam is rotated by a motor through the fixed end, transverse vibration may occur. The motor torque should be controlled insuch a way that the motor rotates by a specified angle, while simultaneously stabilizing vibration of the flexible manipulators so that is arrested as soon as possbile at the end of rotation. Accurate control of lightweight beam during the large changes in configuration common to robotic tasks requires dynamic models that describe both rigid body motions, as well as the flexural vibrations. Therefore, a linear dynamic state-space model of for a single link flexible robot beam is derived and PD controller, LQP controller, and inverse dynamical neural networks controller are composed. The effectiveness the proposed control system is confirmed by computer simulation.
