  • Flat plate slab has been widely used in high rise building for its remarkable advantages. However, Flat plate structures under lateral load are susceptible to punching shear of the slab-column connection. Exterior slab-column connections has an unsymmetrical critical section for eccentric shear of which perimeter is less than that of interior connection, and hence, around the connection, unbalanced moment and eccentric shear are developed by both gravity load and lateral loads. Therefore, exterior connections is susceptible to punching shear failure. For that reason, this study compare ACI 318-05 to CEB-FIP MC 90 that is based on experiment results and existing data of flat plate exterior connections. This study shows that compared to CEB-FIP MC 90 is more exact about eccentric shear stress, unbalanced moment and Both of all are not suitable in large column aspect ratio. Considering gravity shear ratio, These are suitable but design condition only consider gravity shear ratio. So these should be considered differences from change of design condition

  • A number of experiments were performed to investigate the punching shear strength of flat plate-column connections. According to the experiments, the punching shear strength varies significantly with design parameters such as the column size of the connection, reinforcement ratio, and boundary condition. However, current design methods do not properly address the effects of such design parameters. In the present study, a theoratical approach using Rankine's failure cirterion was attempted to define the failure mechanism of the punching shear According to the study, the failure mechanism can be classified into the compression-controlled and the tension-controlled, depending on the amount of bottom re-bars placed at the connection, and the punching shear strength is also significantly affected by the flexural damage of slab. Based on the finding, a new strength model of punching shear was developed, and verified by the comparisons with existing experiments and nonlinear finite element analyses. The comparisons show that the proposed strength model addressing the effects of various design parameters can predict accurately the punching shear strength, compared to the existing strength models.

  • Flat plate slab is cost-efficient structural system widely used in high rise building, apartment and parking garages. But flat plate-column connections are so weak against punching shear failure that it may cause collapse of overall structure. In this study, spiral type shear reinforcement which increases the shear strength and ductility of the plate-column connection and has good workability was proposed. And experimental test was performed to verify the punching shear capacity of spiral type shear reinforcement. The current code does not accurately estimate the punching shear strength of slab-column connection with shear reinforcement because slab is so slender that punching failure may occurred before shear reinforcement reached yield stress. Therefore modified equation of ACI code for punching shear strength was proposed base on finite element analysis using LUSAS program, and data analysis from CEB-FIP database.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate punching shear strength of exterior connections in the flat plate structure with rectangular column. To inspect the effect of column aspect ratios on the punching shear behavior, eight specimens for exterior connection were made and tested. In this experimental program the length of critical perimeter was kept constant, while column aspect ratio varied from 2.0 to 4.5. Two levels of concrete strength and slab reinforcement ratio were also considered. As the column aspect ratio increased, the punching shear strengths are decreased. The decrement of punching shear strength was small in specimens with high aspect ratio of column.

  • This paper summarizes full-scale test results on CFT column-to- flat plate connections has gained wide acceptance subjected to gravity loading. CFT construction has gained wide acceptance in a relatively short time in domestic building construction practice due to its various structural and construction advantages. However, efficient details for CFT column to flat plate connections have not been proposed yet. Based on the strategies that maximize economical field construction, several connecting schemes were proposed and tested. Test results showed strength and connection stiffness exceeding those of R/C flat p late counterparts. A semi-analytical procedure is presented to model the behavior of CFT column-to-flat plate connections. The five parameters to model elastic to post-punching catenary action range are calibrated based on the limited test data of t to progressive collapse prevention design is also illustrated.

  • This paper verified the lateral resisting capacity of CFT column-RC flat plate connection in comparison with general RC column-flat plate connection and detected moment capacity and ductility capacity of connection according to lateral force-displacement ratio. We made and tested specimens which have different variables respectively and as a result derive a following conclusion. In CFT specimen a critical section was extended and initial stiffness and moment increased 35%, 25$^{\sim}$35% respectively in comparison to general RC column specimen. In all specimens generally shear governed behaviors and in CFT specimen complemented with seismic band, flexure behavior region of slab was extended and also ductility ratio and energy absorptance increased.

  • There are many Beam-Column connections in general structures and ship structures. For simplicity and convenience of analysis, the connections are mostly considered hinged when not reinforced or rigidly fixed when reinforced. This paper has intended to analyze the Beam-Column connection which is assumed two dimensional flat plate. The analysis has been preformed by Finite Element Method following the change of moment of inertia at connection. The conclusion of this investigation is as follows: By reinforcing or increasing the moment of inertia at connection part, the stress distribution of whole structure and the stress concentration at that part are relieved. Displacements of beam(when column is fixed) are almost linearly decreasing by the change of moment of inertia at connection.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of gravity-designed post tensioned (PT) flat plate frames with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column. In low and moderate seismic regions, buildings are often designed considering only gravity loads. This study focuses on the seismic performance of gravity load designed PT flat plate frames. For this purpose, 3-, 6- and 9-story PT flat plate frames are designed considering only gravity loads. For reinforced concrete flat plate frames, continuous slab bottom reinforcement (integrity reinforcement) passing through the column should be placed to prevent progressive collapse; however, for the PT flat plate frames, the slab bottom reinforcement is often omitted since the requirement for the slab bottom reinforcement for PT flat plates is not clearly specified in ACI 318-08. This study evaluates the seismic performance of the model frames, which was evaluated by conducting nonlinear time history analyses. For conducting nonlinear time history analyses, six sets of ground motions are used as input ground motions, which represent two different hazard levels (return periods of 475 and 2475 years) and three different locations (Boston, Seattle, and L.A.). This study shows that gravity designed PT flat plate frames have some seismic resistance. In addition, the seismic performance of PT flat plate frames is significantly improved by the placement of slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column.

  • Recently the construction of high-rise hybrid type building is progressively increased as the social demands. It is significantly important factors such as economy, the safety of structure, and the flexibility of internal space. Therefore new hybrid structural system, using slim flat plate system, is also required to be attained the reduction of story height, the flexibility and efficient use of space. The most suitable structural system is ,with the economy and flexibility, flat plate system in high-rise hybrid type building. But it was focused in the seismic performance for high performance flat plate system in high-rise hybrid type building. Therefore, in the study, to develop the new flat-plate system with high ductile, durable, good performance for the applications. It was evaluated the seismic performance in the critical region of slab-column connection. And then high performance flat plate system, designed by the economy and safety, was developed as a new technique in the application of high-rise hybrid type building.

  • Flat plate structures subjected to lateral load have less deformability than conventional moment frames, due to the brittle failure of plate-column connection. In the present study, parametric study using nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to investigate the deformability of flat plates. The numerical results show that as number of continuous spans increases, the deformability of flat plates considerably decreases. Therefore, existing experiments using sub-assemblages with 1 or 2 spans may overestimate the deformability of flat plates, and current design provisions based on the experiments may not be accurate in estimating the deformability. A design method estimating the deformability was developed on the basis of numerical results, and verified by comparison with existing experiment. In the proposed method, the effects of primary design parameters such as direct shear force, punching shear capacity, aspect ratio of connection, number of spans, and initial stiffness of plate can be considered.
