Recently, a fuel reforming plant for supplying high purity hydrogen has been studied to increase the operation time of underwater weapon systems. Since steam reforming is an endothermic reaction, it is necessary to continuously supply heat to the reactor. A fuel reforming plant needs a methanol-O2 catalytic burner to obtain heat and supply heat to the reformer. In this study, two types of designs of a catalytic burner are presented and the results are analyzed through the experiments. The design of the catalytic burner is divided into that the O2 supply direction is perpendicular to the methanol flow direction (Design 1) and the same as the methanol flow direction (Design 2). In case of Design 1, backfire and flame combustion occurred in the mixing space in front of the catalyst, and in the absence of the mixing space, combustion reaction occurred only in a part of the catalyst. For above reasons, Design 1 could not increase the exhaust gas temperature to 750℃. In Design 2, no flashback and flame combustion were observed, the exhaust gas could be maintained up to 750℃. However, the O2 distributor was exposed to high temperatures, resulting in thermal damage.
Background: Epidural steroid injections (ESI) are a common treatment for spinal disorders. Previous research has shown that aspiration of the syringe is not a sensitive test for placement of an intravascular needle. Serious complications have been reported from injection of steroids and local anesthetics into the vascular space. In addition to safety concerns, the efficacy may decline with partial injection outside the desired epidural location. We hypothesized that incidence of vascular problems is increased in patients who undergo spine surgery compared with the patients who don't undergo spine surgery. We investigated the incidence of vascular problems during lumbosacral transforaminal ESI and we compared the difference of vascular problems between the patients who undergo spinal surgery and those patients who don't undergo spinal surgery. Methods: Two hundreds and three patients were consecutively recruited and they received 299 fluoroscopically guided lumbosacral transforaminal ESIs. Injection of contrast was performed under live dynamic fluoroscopy with using digital substraction analysis. The observed uptake pattern was classified into one of three categories: flashback, aspirated, and positive contrast with negative flashback and aspiration. Results: The vascular incidence rate was 20.4%. Transforaminal ESIs performed at S1 had avascular incidence rate of 27.8% compared with 17.7% for all the other lumbar injection sites. The sensitivity of spontaneous observation of blood in the needle hub or blood aspirate for predicting an intravascular injection in lumbar transforaminal ESIs was 70.4%. Conclusions: There is a high incidence of intravascular problems when performing transforaminal ESIs, and this is significantly increased in patients with previous spine surgery. Using a flash or blood aspiration to predict an intravascular injection is not sensitive therefore; a negative flash or aspiration is not reliable. Fluoroscopically guided procedures without contrast confirmation are prone to instill medications intravascularly. This finding confirms the need for not only fluoroscopic guidance, but also for contrast injection instillation when performing lumbosacral transforaminal ESIs, and especially for patients with previous spine surgery.
Stabilization characteristics of highly $N_2$-diluted $CH_4-O_2$ flame in an axially two-section porous inert medium were experimentally investigated for its application to the waste gas scrubber in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The flame behaviors were observed with respect to the fuel and $N_2$ flow rates and the equivalence ratios. As a result, four kinds of flame behaviors such as stable, flashback crossing the interface, blowout and sudden extinction were observed.
Flame characteristics of a methane-air premixed flame stabilized in a heat-regenerative small combustor were investigated experimentally. A small combustor having two counter-current shallow channels and a combustion space at one side was developed. In which the channel-gap was less the ordinary quenching distance of a stoichiometric methane-air premixed flame. Two design parameters of channel gap and thickness of the middle wall, which is located between two channels for unburned and burned gases, were varied. Flame stabilization conditions and characteristic flame behaviors were experimentally examined. Conclusively, Blowout conditions were governed mostly by the scale of the combustion space, and flashback conditions into the channel are dominated by the channel gap. Surface temperatures of the combustor were between 100 to 500$^{\circ}C$. Additionally, two distinctive flame stabilization modes of radiation and well-stirred?reaction were observed and their applicability was discussed.
Three-dimensional numerical investigations are carried out to understand the combustion characteristics inside a DLN(dry low NOx) utility gas turbine combustor during the combustion mode change period by applying transient fuel flow rates in fuel supply system as numerical boundary conditions. The numerical solution domain comprises the complex combustor liner including cooling air holes, three types of fuel nozzles, a swirl vane, and a venturi. Detailed three-dimensional flow and temperature fields before and after combustion mode changeover have been analyzed. The results may be useful for further studies on the unfavorable phenomena, such as flashback or thermal damage of combustor parts when the combustion mode changes.
Emission characteristics of nitric oxides and carbon monoxide from a porous media combustor has been experiment studied. The relationship between the change of flame shape and emission has also been examined. As the equivalence ratio decreases, the flame shape on the ceramic matrix plate changes from a diffusion flame, R(radiant)-type flame, to B(Blue)-type flame. With large fuel flow rate, R-type flame turns to be two dimensional R-II type flame around the equivalence of 0.7. Carbon monoxide emission increases very rapid with decreasing equivalence ratio. It changes a lot from some 10 ppm to 100-10,000 ppm with the change of flame type from R-I to R-II type. Nitric oxide emission from the premixed burner is less than 25 ppm over all range of fuel flow rate, which is less than 20% of NOx emission from conventional gas burners.
Recently, gas turbines for power generation adopt multistage DLN(Dry Low NOx) type combustion, where diffusion combustion is applied at low load and, with increase in load, the combustion mode is changed to lean premixed combustion to reduce NOx emissive concentration. However, during the mode changeover from diffusion to premixed flame, unfavorable phenomena, such as flashback, high amplitude combustion oscillations, or thermal damage of combustor parts could frequently occur. In the present study, to apply for the analysis of such unfavorable phenomena, three-dimensional CFD investigations are carried out to compare the detailed flow characteristics and temperature distribution inside the gas turbine combustor before and after combustion mode changeover. The fuel considered here is pure methane gas. A standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function and a P-N type radiation heat transfer model, have been utilized. To analyze the complex geometric effects of combustor parts on combustion characteristics, fuel nozzles, a swirl vane f3r fuel-air mixing, and cooling air holes on the combustor liner wall, are included in this simulation.
Experimental studies on combustion phenomena within a porous ceramic burner are reported. Main interest of the present work is to investigate fundamental flame behaviors and their effects on the burner operation. Due to high thermal capacity of the porous ceramic materials, the response of flame to burning condition changes is slow and thus to have a stabilized flame is quite difficult and takes much time. It is found that the temperature profile obtained at downstream of the flame zone is not much sensitive to the movement of flame and the speed of flame movement is less than 0.1 mm/sec for the conditions tested. With the premixed LPG/air flame imbedded within the porous ceramic burner, stable combustion regions and unstable combustion regions leading to blowoff or flashback phenomena are observed and mapped on flow velocity versus equivalence ratio diagram. For the development of burner operation technique which is more practical and safe, intermittent burning technique, where the fuel or/and air is supplied to the burner intermittently, is proposed as one of the flame control methods for the porous ceramic burner and tested in this study. Through the experiment, it is realized that the proposed method is acceptable in respect to burner performance and give much flexibility in the operation of porous ceramic burner.
The combustion instability was experimentally investigated in model gas turbine combustor with dual swirl burner. When such instability occurs, a strong coupling between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave which results in a loud sound, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and entire system. In present study, to understand the combustion instability with a premixed mixture, the detailed periods of pressure and heat release data in unstable flame mode were investigated by various measurement methods at relatively rich condition and lean condition near flammable limits. Also, to prepare the utilization of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel in gas turbine system, an investigation was conducted using a simulated SNG including methane as a reference fuel to examine the effects of $H_2$ content on flame stability. These results provide that the instability due to flash-back behaviour like CIVB phenomenon occurred at rich condition, while the repetition of relighting and extinction caused the oscillation of lean condition near flammable limit. From the analysis of $H_2$ content effects, it is also confirmed that the instability frequency is proportional to the laminar burning velocity at both rich and lean condition.
