  • On this study, we developed the electrostatic eliminator for charged particles in manufacturing process. The characteristics of the electrostatic eliminator were investigated, which is two kinds. The first one is Electrical Corona Discharged Type Ionizer. The second one is Photo Ionizer in using soft X-ray. From the experiment, we have obtained the following results. In case of Electrical Corona Discharged Ionizer, neutralization efficiency of charged particles were approximately saturated to 98% over 6.0kV, but as it is non-explosion proof, can not be used in flammable particle treatment process. While in case of photo Ionizer in using soft X-Ray, neutralization efficiency of charged particles were approximately 95%, and more its structure is explosion proof, could be used in flammable particle treatment process.

  • Lower flash points for the binary systems, carbon tetrachloride+o-xylene and water+n-butanol were measured by Pensky-Martens closed cup tester. The Raoult's law and optimization method using van Laar equation were used to predict the lower flash points and were compared with experimental data. The calculated values based on the optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.

  • Flammable compounds are indispensible in domestic as well as in industrial fields as fuel, solvent and raw materials. The fire and explosion properties necessary for safe storage, transport, process design and operation of handling flammable substances are lower explosive limits(LEL), upper explosive limits(UEL), flash point, fire point, AIT(auto ignition temperature), MIE(minimum ignition energy), MOC(minimum oxygen concentration) and heats of combustion.

  • The flash point is one of the most important combustible properties used to determine the potential for the fire and explosion hazards of industrial material and the fire point is the temperature of the flammable liquid at which there will be flaming combustion, sustained 5 seconds in response to the pilot flame. In this study, the flash point and fire point were measured to present raw data of the flammable risk assessment for alcohols, using Tag open-cup apparatus(ASTM D 1310-86). The measured values were compared with the calculated values based on 0.78 times stoichiometric concentration. The values calculated by the proposed equations were in good agreement with the measured values.

  • The flash point are used to classify combustible liquids according to their relative flammability. The regulations for the safe handling, transportation, and storage of such substances are dependent on this classification, and the flash points are therefore of great important in the chemical industry.(omitted)

  • Chlorine-containing modified polyester polyols were synthesized by two-step condensation reactions. Intermediate was synthesized by the esterification of monochloroacetic acid with trimethylolpropane in the first step. Polycondensation of the intermediate (MCAOs), 1,4-butanediol, and trimethylolpropane with adipic acid was carried out. Two-component polyurethane (PU) coatings were prepared by blending MCAOs and IPDI-isocyanurate. There new flame-retardant coatings showed various properties comparable to other non-flame-retardant coatings. They were superior to flammable coatings from the experimental results showing rapid and 10 to 13 hours of pot-life. Coatings with 30wt% monochloroacetic acid was not flammable by the vertical flame retardancy test.

  • In this paper which was performed to bring public attention to the need for developing an photoelectric smoke detector that detects smokes emitted from diverse fire sources, it was confirmed that the photoelectric smoke detector may not respond to certain smoke types depending on the size and color of smoke particles. The test was performed on a photoelectric smoke detector which is being used generally for specific fire targets specified in UL268, including paper fire, wood fire and flammable liquid fire, while the actual response performance of the fire detector, as well as respective smoke particles collected from different fire source which were photographed with a SEM(Scanning electron microscope) were analyzed in the test for this study.

  • Explosion limit is one of the major combustion properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. In this study, the lower explosion limit(LEL) and upper explosion limit(UEL) of ethers were predicted by using the heat of combustion and stoichiometric coefficients. The values calculated by the proposed equations agreed with literature data within a few percent. From the given results, using the proposed methodology, it is possible to predict the explosion limits of the other flammable ethers.
