  • The purpose of study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency in LPG engine with hydrogen enrichment. The test engine was named heavy-duty variable compression ratio single cylinder engine (VCSCE). The fuel supply system provides LPG/hydrogen mixtures based on same heating value. Various sensors such as crank shaft position sensor (CPS) and hall sensor supply spark timing data to ignition controller. Displacement of VCSCE is $1858.2cm^3$. VCSCE was runned 1400rpm with compression ratio 8. Spark timing was set MBT without knocking. Relative air-fuel ratio(${\lambda}$) of this work was varied between 0.76 and 1.5. As a result, i) Maximum thermal efficiency occurred at ${\lambda}$ value 1.0. It was shown that thermal efficiency was increased approximately 5% with hydrogen enrichment at same ${\lambda}$ value. ii) Engine-out carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were decreased at a great rate under LPG/hydrogen mixture fuelling. iii) Total hydrocarbon (THC) emission was much exhausted in rich zone, same as CO. But THC was exhausted a little bit more in lean zone. iv) Finally, engine-out oxides of nitrogen (NOx) was increased with ${\lambda}$ value 1.0 zone at a greater rate with hydrogen enrichment due to high adiabatic flame temperature.

  • The interest of incineration, which is one of the effective methods for municipal waste disposal, has gradually increased because the incineration could reduce the volume and weight of the waste, and produce useful energy from the waste. This study has developed the 3-dimensional numerical model, and applied for the investigation of combustion characteristics and optimized operating conditions in MSW incinerator in Gwangju. The model developed in this study has been verified through the comparison between the predicted and the measured temperature in combustion chamber which is operating. By predictive results, the Sangmoo incinerator has a good characteristics of combustion efficiency and a low emission by the second burning in the main flame zone, even though after burning zone produces incomplete products by which primary air is introduced not enough.

  • Nanocomposites of polyurethane were prepared from inorganic nano particles, $Na^+-montmorillonite$ (MMT), silica, $CaCO_3$, and surface modified MMT and their properties were investigated. It was shown that the molecular weight and polydispenity of nanocomposites of polyurethane were 20000 to 28000 and 1.0 to 2.0, respectively. d-Spacing for nanocomposites of MMT were increased than that of pure MMT. Initial degradation temperature of nanocomposites were 250 to $280^{\circ}C$. And also, the range of weight loss for nanocomposites were decreased and the end of thermal degradation was observed at higher temperatures about $50^{\circ}C$. The elongation at break for $CaCO_3$ filled nanocomposites were the highest among the nanocomposites used in this study. studied. It was found that the tensile strength increased with increasing the filler contents while the silica nanocomposite exhibited the lowest increase and the $CaCO_3$ nanocomposite the highest.

  • The regenerator is important part of the glass melting furnace to increase the temperature of the intake air through the combustion flame. The insulation, checker brick, prevention of the air leak has been studied to decrease the fuel consumption in glass melting industries. Thus the new types of checker brick and the design of the rider arch has been studied to prolong the life of the glass melting furnace. The height of the regenerator increased from 5.64 m to 7.89 m in the reforming of the glass melting furnace. Thus the stability of the rider arch is studied under the condition of increased load of checker brick in this research. The rider arch was estimated to be stable inspite of the increase of load according to the calculation. The max. sustained compressive stress of the rider arch is 163 kg/$cm^2$ and the max. sustained shear stress is 6.37 kg/$cm^2$.

  • Increasing demand for natural gas and higher natural gas prices in the recent decades have led many people to pursue unconventional methods of natural gas production. POSCO-Gwangyang synthetic natural gas (SNG) project was launched in 2010. As the market price of natural gas goes up, the increase of its price gets more sensitive due to the high cost of transportation and liquefaction. This project can make the SNG economically viable. In parallel with this project, KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) joined in launching the SNG Quality Standard Bureau along with KOGAS (Korea Gas Corporation), POSCO and so on. KEPCO Research Institute is in charge of SNG fueled gas turbine combustion test. In this research, several combustion tests were conducted to find out the effect of hydrogen contents in SNG on gas turbine combustion. The hydrogen in synthetic natural gas did not affect on gas turbine combustion characteristics which are turbine inlet temperature including pattern factor and emission performance. However, flame stable region in ${\Phi}$-Air flow rate map was shifted to the lean condition due to autocatalytic effect of hydrogen.

  • Fuel stratification and thermal stratification occur in the HCCI combustion chamber on a microscopic scale. They affect the ignition and combustion processes. In this study, the effect of the inhomogeneity in the mixture gas on the HCCI combustion process was investigated. Two-dimensional chemiluminescence images were captured using a framing camera to evaluate the flame structure. DME was used as the test fuel. First, the effect of inhomogeneity in the fuel distribution in the premixture was investigated for the four-stroke optically accessible engine. Then, by comparing the combustion of the homogeneous mixture in the rapid compression machine, which does not contain any residual gas, with the combustion in the four-stroke engine, the effect of inhomogeneity in temperature due to the residual gas was analyzed. The results showed that a time lag appears spatially in combustion under inhomogeneous conditions in the four-stroke engine. The spatial variation in the combustion without the residual gas in the rapid compression machine is less than that in the combustion in the four-stroke engine.

  • Internal detonation of a warhead inside a compartment of naval vessel can result in serious blast damages including plastic deformation and rupture of the structural members especially bulkhead due to the huge explosive impact pressure, fragments and high temperature flame. To secure watertight integrity and to prevent the domino-type flooding of neighbouring compartments caused by the rupture of bulkheads, it is necessary to develop the structural design technology of Blast Hardened Bulkheads(BHB) which can resist the blast impact pressure of threatening weapons to increase the survivability of naval vessels. This study dealt with the simplified structural response analysis of BHB under impact pressure of confined explosion and aimed to develop the efficient and rational design method of BHB and joint structures which can be applied at initial design stage. The present 1st report dealt with the phenomena of explosive detonation surveying the preceding experimental/theoretical research and the characteristics of time history of blast pressure including the peak value and duration time were examined. And to predict the large plastic deformation behaviors of BHB by the huge blast pressure reasonably, the plastic hinge method including the membrane effects was formulated. It was applied to the simplified structural design equations. The following report will deal with the application and adjustment process of the structural scantling equations to the actual BHB design and verification of validity of them.

  • In general there are few cases which were caused by lightening and no fire was observed to have been caused but by artificial or accidental fires during preliminary survey. And then the most scales of burning in Korea are like the fig. 2. Temperature 5 cm apart from flame at the burning site were known to range from 165$^{\circ}$to 20$0^{\circ}C$ in surface fire on Myozangdong, pine-quercus dominant community and from 120$^{\circ}$ to 145$^{\circ}C$ in surface fire of Wolwoonni, Mischanthus dominant area and from 120$^{\circ}$ to 14$0^{\circ}C$ in ground fire of Wangzinkun, Mischanthus dominant, respectively. Through the preliminary survey, fire indicater plants in Korea were confirmed as Mischanthus coreensis Hack and Carex alterifolia Franch. The plants of highest frequency appeared in the burnt sites were known to as Potentilla cryptotaeniae Max, Mischanthus coreensis Hack, Carex alterifolia Franch and Artemisia brachyphylla Kitamura. Lespedezas were proved as one of the fire tolerant and Pinus densiflora was found out as the lowest intolerant plant to fire. The acidity of burnt soil was decreased according to the considerable amount of ash left on the ground. The acidity of surface soil was more decreased than the below 10cm of soil. The chemical composition(NO3, P, K, Mg, Total-N and Organic-C) of burnt soil was more increased than those of the unburnt sites. And the population changes of soil microflora seemed to have a certain tendency. The population of soil microflora was increased a little according to climatic conditions. Also there was an initial decrease in the population of microflora followed immediately by a significant increase.

  • A chemical reaction of PBDEs was implemented using the polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and KOH, along with different reaction conditions such as temperatures and times. Removal efficiencies of PBDEs before and after chemical reaction were examined by difference of concentration. PBDEs was not removed at lower temperatures of 25 and $50^{\circ}C$. However, under the increased temperature, removal efficiency of PBDEs in ${\sigma}$-xylene was gradually increased, showing completely removal of PBDEs containing 5-6 bromines on biphenyl frame. When increasing the reaction conditions to 4 hours and $150^{\circ}C$, removal efficiency of PBDEs reached almost 100%. In studying the reaction of PEGs with PBDEs, it confirmed that the PBDEs led to less brominated by PEGs through a stepwise process with the successive elimination of bromines.

  • Various jet engines (Turbine engine family and RAM Jet engine) have been developed for high speed aircrafts. but their application to hypersonic flight is restricted by principle problems such as increase of total pressure loss and thermal stress. Therefore, the development of next generation propulsion system for hypersonic aircraft is a very important subject in the aerospace engineering field, SCRAM Jet engine based on a key technology, Supersonic Combustion. is supposed as the best choice for the hypersonic flight. Since Supersonic Combustion requires both rapid ignition and stable flame holding within supersonic air stream, much attention have to be given on the mixing state between air stream and fuel flow. However. the wider diffusion of fuel is expected with less total pressure loss in the supersonic air stream. So. in this study the direction of fuel injection is inclined 30 degree to downstream and the total pressure of jet is controlled for lower penetration height than thickness of boundary layer. Under these flow configuration both streams, fuel and supersonic air stream, would not mix enough. To spread fuel wider into supersonic air an aerodynamic force, baroclinic torque, is adopted. Baroclinic torque is generated by a spatial misalignment between pressure gradient (shock wave plane) and density gradient (mixing layer). A wedge is installed in downstream of injector orifice to induce an oblique shock. The schlieren optical visualization from side transparent wall and the total pressure measurement at exit cross section of combustor estimate how mixing is enhanced by the incidence of shock wave into supersonic boundary layer composed by fuel and air. In this study non-combustionable helium gas is injected with total pressure 0.66㎫ instead of flammable fuel to clarify mixing process. Mach number 1.8. total pressure O.5㎫, total temperature 288K are set up for supersonic air stream.
