  • The present article discusses the effect of the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress on the failure behavior of the planar non-persistent open joints. Totally, 38 models were prepared using plaster and dimensions of $15cm{\times}15cm{\times}15cm$. The bridge area occupied $45cm^2$, $90cm^2$ and $135cm^2$ out of the shear surface. The number of rock bridges increase in fixed area. Two similar samples were prepared on every variation in the rock bridges and tested for direct shear strength under two high and low normal loads. The results indicated that the failure pattern and the failure mechanism is mostly influenced by the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface and normal stress so that the tensile failure mode change to shear failure mode by increasing in the value of introduced parameters. Furthermore, the shear strength and shear stiffness are closely related to the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress.

  • In this paper, we try to classify behavior patterns of a person around a bed based on a wireless sensor network system. We define five behavioral patterns and three states of a person around a bed which is described by a state machine. We collected data sensed by motion detection and vibration sensors installed around a bed from which a feature vector was extracted. Based on feature vector corresponding to behavioral patterns and the state machine, we established a model for behavioral patterns. To validate the model, experiments on subjects were performed and the model was fixed. These experimental results revealed that behavior patterns of a person around a bed can be classified well.

  • For a formation of membrane structures, single crystal silicon wafers have been anisotropically etched with solutions of KOH and KOH-IPA. The etching rate was observed to be strongly dependent upon the etchant temperature and concentration. Mask patterns for the etching experiment was aligned to incline $45^{\circ}$on the primary flat of the silicon wafer. The different etching characteristics were observed according to pattern directions and etchant concentration. When the KOH concentration was fixed to 20 wt%, the U-groove etching shape was observed for the etching temperature of above $80^{\circ}C$, and V-groove shapes observed at below $80^{\circ}C$. Hillocks, which were generated at the etched silicon surfaces, has been decreased as the increasing of the etchant temperature and concentration.

  • Combined optical simulation of the ray-tracing technique and the finite difference time domain method was used to investigate the effect of the emitter orientation and the photonic crystal layer on the outcoupling efficiency (OCE) of bottom-emission type organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The OLED with a horizontal emitter exhibited an opposite interference effect to that of one with a vertical emitter, which suggested that the OCE would be very sensitive to the emitter orientation at a fixed emitter-cathode distance. The OLED with a horizontal emitter exhibited much larger OCE than that with a vertical emitter did, which was due to the substantial difference in the radiation pattern along with the different coupling with the surface plasmon excitation. The OCE with a horizontal emitter was increased by approximately 1.3 times by inserting a photonic crystal layer between the indium tin oxide layer and the glass substrate. The present study suggested that appropriate control of the emitter orientation and its combination to other outcoupling structures could be used to enhance the OCE of OLEDs substantially.

  • This paper deals with the performance comparison of a PSO algorithm inspired in the process of simulating the behavior pattern of the organisms. The PSO algorithm finds the optimal solution (fitness value) of the objective function based on a stochastic process. Generally, the stochastic process, a random function, is used with the expression related to the velocity included in the PSO algorithm. In this case, the random function of the normal distribution (Gaussian) or uniform distribution are mainly used as the random function in a PSO algorithm. However, in this paper, because the probability distribution which is various with 2 shape parameters can be expressed, the performance comparison of a PSO algorithm using the beta probability distribution function, that is a random function which has a high degree of freedom, is introduced. For performance comparison, 3 functions (Rastrigin, Rosenbrock, Schwefel) were selected among the benchmark Set. And the convergence property was compared and analyzed using PSO-FIW to find the optimal solution.

  • NbN thin films were deposited on thermally oxidized Si substrate at room temperature by using reactive magnetron sputtering in an $Ar-N_2$ gas mixture. Total sputtering gas pressure was fixed while varying $N_2$ flow rate from 1.4 sccm to 2.9 sccm. X-ray diffraction pattern analysis revealed dominant NbN(200) orientation in the low $N_2$ flow rate but emerging of (111) orientation with diminishing (200) orientation at higher flow rate. The dependences of the superconducting properties on the $N_2$ gas flow rate were investigated. All the NbN thin films showed a small negative temperature coefficient of resistance with resistivity ratio between 300 K and 20 K in the range from 0.98 to 0.89 as the $N_2$ flow rate is increased. Transition temperature showed non-monotonic dependence on $N_2$ flow rate reaching as high as 11.12 K determined by the mid-point temperature of the transition with transition width of 0.3 K. On the other hand, the upper critical field showed roughly linear increase with $N_2$ flow rate up to 2.7 sccm. The highest upper critical field extrapolated to 0 K was 17.4 T with corresponding coherence length of 4.3 nm. Our results are discussed with the granular nature of NbN thin films.

  • The digital color image can be distorted by noise for a transmission or other elements of system. It happens to vague of a boundary side in the division of a color image object, especially, boundary side of an input color image is very important because it can be determined to the division and detection element in pattern recognition. Therefore it is boundary part In this paper, it detects the optimal edge with applying this color image to WCNN algorithm, after it does level up a boundary side of a color image by using the adaptive morphology as the threshold of an input color image. Also, it is used not a conventional fixed mask edge detection method but variable mask method which is cal led a variable BBM. It is confirmed by simulation that the proposed algorithm can be got the batter result edge at the place of closing to each edges and having smoothly curved line.

  • Gelatinization properties of the air-dried sediment of cowpea were investigated. The water-binding capacity of cowpea flour was drastically increased over the temperature range of 52~55$^{\circ}C$. The percent transmittance of flour suspension was linearly increased at temperature between $65^{\circ}C$ to 75$^{\circ}C$. The gelatinization temperature determined by differential scanning calorimetry was 63.4~76.$0^{\circ}C$. Cowpea flour showed a single-stage of swelling and a low solubility pattern. The minimum moisture content required for the gelatinization was 37.0% . The amylograph peak viscosity was greatly influenced by concentration of the flour, but was not affected by heating temperatures (85~94$^{\circ}C$) at a given concentration. The 20 min height and cold viscosity at 3$0^{\circ}C$ at a fixed concentration was negatively correlated (p<0.05) with heating temperatures.

  • This paper reports the application study of the ground reinforcement under a pipe joint. The soil-reinforcement interaction helps to minimize the stress concentration at joint. The settlement pattern and the earth pressure variation have been evaluated under the pipeline subjected to differential settlement. The pipeline is fixed at one side with the other side set free being loaded with a uniform surface loading. The problem has been studied by means of laboratory model test and flite element technique, and the analysis results are compared for both non-reinforced and reinforced cases to evaluate the effectiveness of the soil reinforcement for restraining the settlement of the pipeline.

  • Since a construction project is a series of works that utilizes resources to accomplish the project goal for a given time period, efficient resource management is a prerequisite for the success of the project. Two major areas of resource management are resource constrained scheduling focusing on the limited resource availability and resource leveling focusing on smoothing resource usage pattern on the fixed project completion time. It is not available, however, to apply both techniques to a project at the same time. This paper proposes a model to enhance the minimum moment algorithm of resource leveling, aiming to find an efficient usage of resources and an appropriate project completion time. A survey is performed to evaluate the major five factors using the AHP.
