  • BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity(SO), a condition of the reduction in muscle mass paired with an increased fat mass has been paid attention because of its association with disability in later life. A few evidence, however, has reported the association with these factors. PURPOSE: To explore the association among SO, physical function and fitness in older women. METHOD: 257 older women(age of 74) were recruited from Y city and 7 physical functions and 4 fitness tests were measured. Participants were classified into one of four groups based on their body fat and muscle mass: Normal group (GR-A), high fat(GR-B), sarcopenia(GR-C), and sarcopenic obese(GR-D). GLMand LSD-test were conducted with SPSS 12.0. RESULTS: Chair stand, arm-curl, back-scratch, 2-min steps of GR-A was higher than GR-C and GR-D(p<.05). One-leg stand of GR-A was higher than GR-D(p<.01) and of GR-C was higher than GR-D(p<.01).8ft-TUG of GR-D was lower than GR-A(p<.01). Grip strength, knee extension of GR-A was higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01) and knee flexion of GR-A was also higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01). CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, we conclude that SO is significantly associated with lower physical function and fitness in older Korean women, which alarm the risk of frailty induced by SO.

  • Reliability assessment of power systems has been an important topic for the past several decades. It is becoming even more important nowadays as the power market moves toward a new competitive environment. This paper deals with two topics on reliability assessment. The first is how to select probability distributions and determine their parameters to model the probabilistic events in a power system. The second is how to consider restorative actions in the assessment, which directly influence reliability indices. This paper proposes simple but convincing alternative solutions on the two topics. In the case study, this paper shows the influences of the probability distributions that are used in power system modeling.

  • Pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and the least environmentally disruptive means for transmitting gas or oil. Recently, failures due to corrosion defects have become a major concern in maintaining pipeline integrity. A number of solutions have been developed for the assessment of remaining strength of corroded pipelines. In this paper, a Fitness-For-Purpose(FFP) type limit load solution for corroded city gas pipelines is proposed. For this purpose, a series of burst tests with various types of machined defects were performed. Finite element simulations were carried out to derive an appropriate failure criterion. Based on such solution along with existing solutions, an integrity evaluation program for corroded city gas pipeline, COPAP-CITY, has been developed.

  • This study was initiated to research on the uniform preference uniform satisfaction and wearing of female workers' uniform of the fiber firms. Data was obtained from 361 female workers of the fiber firms in Chon Buk. And it was analyzed by frequency percent mean duncan's multiple test. The results of this study were as follows; 1) Pocket sleeve and front hem were parts of the damage. The weaving workers were mostly wore upper and under garments but most of there workers were only wore an upper garment on the basic type of uniform The older and married were small in the fitness of uniform the armhole sleeve girth sleeve length and breast girth were unfitted 2) Workers was dissatisfied to the noise and the dust in working environment. Uniform satisfaction of workers were mostly low design color and fabric were the lowest factors of uniform satisfaction. The satisfaction of material were also low the lowest factors were absorptiveness elasticity breathability. Workers wanted the fashion and light colored uniform but they prefered function activity to work and manageability on wearing rather than externals among the uniform preference.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the empowerment structural model based on Kanter's work empowerment theory. Method: A predictive, nonexperimental design was used in a sample of 279 nurses from 3 university affiliated hospitals. Data were collected with self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using mean, standard deviation, pearson correlation coefficient and path analysis. Results: The results showed that the overall fitness of the hypothethical model to the data was good(chi-square=.7751, df=4, p=.942, GFI=.999, AGFI=.996, RMSEA=.000). Both formal power and informal power directly influenced on nurses' perceived empowerment level and empowerment directly influenced on nurses' organizational commitment and indirectly influenced on nurses' intent to stay. Conclusion: The results imply that hospital and nurse managers should provide the empowering working condition for nurses to be stayed in hospitals.

  • In this paper, we develop an adaptive genetic algorithm (aGA). The aGA has an adaptive scheme which can automatically determine the use of local search technique and adaptively regulate the rates of crossover and mutation operations during its search process. For the adaptive scheme, the ratio of degree of dispersion resulting from the various fitness values of the populations at continuous two generations is considered. For the local search technique, an improved iterative hill climbing method is used and incorporated into genetic algorithm (GA) loop. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of the aGA, i) a canonical GA without any adaptive scheme and ii) several conventional aGAs with various adaptive schemes are also presented. These algorithms, including the aGA, are tested and analyzed each other using various test problems. Numerical results by various measures of performance show that the proposed aGA outperforms the conventional algorithms.

  • Symbiotic evolutionary algorithms, also called cooperative coevolutionary algorithms, are stochastic search algorithms that imitate the biological coevolution process through symbiotic interactions. In the algorithms, the fitness evaluation of an individual required first selecting symbiotic partners of the individual. Several partner selection strategies are provided. The goal of this study is to analyze how much partnering strategies can influence the performance of the algorithms. With two types of test-bed problems: the NKC model and the binary string covering problem, extensive experiments are carried out to compare the performance of partnering strategies, using the analysis of variance. The experimental results indicate that there does not exist statistically significant difference in their performance.

  • Due to the aging effect, older people have relatively weaker muscular performance, less range of motion in the joint articulation, and the lower sense of equilibrium than younger people. These factors attribute to their slow and clumsy ingress/egress motion. In order to analyze ingress/egress motion strategy of the elderly, healthy thirty 65 or more years old volunteers were recruited. The health condition of the each volunteer was verified by the medical checkup and also their physical capabilities were quantified by six fitness tests. Through the video analysis, older driver's ingress/egress motion strategies were classified and statistically investigated. For a comparison purpose, another thirty young volunteers also participated in the same test protocol and their ingress/egress motion strategies were also included in the statistical analysis.

  • Load modeling has a significant impact on power system analysis and control. Estimating model parameters can be considered as important as stability analysis itself for accurate analysis and control. This paper presents a method for estimating parameters for load models, which include static and dynamic parts, based on particle swarm optimization. The method effectively searches a suitable set of parameters minimizing the fitness function. This paper applies the method to simulation data obtained from 8-bus test system including induction motors.

  • Group buying is one of the most popular transaction patterns on the internet at least in Korea. Nevertheless, it is hard to find academic researches for it in view of consumer behavior. In this paper, we analyze factors which determine consumer's attitude toward and intention of participation in Internet group buying by comparison of Internet individual one. For this purpose, we propose “lowering price”, “decreasing risk” and “reducing transaction cost” as relative advantages and "lack of product assortment" and "delay of time" as relative disadvantages over individual buying on the Internet. For empirical test, Internet users who have some experiences of individual buying but not group ones on the Internet are surveyed and analyzed. In result, a satisfying model fitness for structural equation model is derived and most hypotheses except the relationship between "decreasing risk" and "attitude toward Internet group buying" are accepted. Our results provide not only academic contribution by suggestion of a research framework but also practical insight by discussion of diverse features in Internet group buying.verse features in Internet group buying.
