  • Since hot toxic gas included in the fire is the most principal reason of the death and has the fluid mechanical characteristics unlike air, smoke control method appropriate for the figure and structure of a fire room is needed and each unit of the smoke control system requests high performance according to this characteristics, for which performance test procedures and evaluation criteria must be established. Domestic criteria involved with the smoke control consist of the pre-investigation by documents and the part inspection, which has lots of problems because they are far from the performance based evaluation method compared with the references of developed countries. Consequently, domestic and international references were compared and analyzed, problems being emerged and standardization scheme of the test procedure was presented.

  • Flame detectors has been used more than heat & smoke detector, because this is more effective to catch fire and ceiling height in spite of high price. For upgrade to flame detector, Compare to national or abroad standard about performance test, sensitivity test, sectioning indoor or outdoor, after service and management. As a result, Europe and America have only sensitivity test, no have not operation test and sectioning indoor & outdoor. In performance test, action is put to focus to credit and durability, Not operation test is to be able to tune the sensitivity to match the environment of the site. Also, we need code about aftercare, quality assurance responsibility and implement special detector institution by Certificate Authority implement.

  • Recently, the higher buildings are, the stronger concrete are used. Ultra high strength concrete have the possibility of spalling when a fire breaks out. so the fire-resistance performance is necessary to use the ultra high strength concrete on the high-rise building. On this study, the heating test for the concrete with loading/unloading is performed for ultra high strength concrete using nylon fiber. The heating test followed by ISO-834 heating curve on the real-size specimen and the strength of concrete are 60, 80, 100, 200 MPa.

  • The fire resistance test has been conducted under the standard fire & loading conditions to evaluate fire resistance performance, according to applying to methods of the lateral confinement reinforcement by prestressed Wire Rope and fire resistance reinforcement by Fiber-Cocktail and load ratio for high strength concrete column. The test result, for 60 MPa high-strength concrete column, It was indicated that applying to the wire rope has improved axial ductility in the fire condition, and fire resistance performance has been enhanced by more than 23 %. In addition to this, in case of applying the wire rope to 60 MPa high-strength concrete column, load can be judged that about 70 % of designed load is appropriate. If the Wire Rope and Fiber-Cocktail is applied to 100 MPa high-strength concrete column, It was shown that the fire resistance performance was enhanced by 4 times as much as applying only hoops.

  • This study describes the development of a long-distance hose for ultra-high pressure operation, which can be used in conjunction with an ultra-high pressure pump and can be effectively applied to the fire suppression of high-rise buildings and a long, large tunnels. Also, it has phosphorescent properties, which can help to secure the withdrawal route of the fire-fighters when they are threatened by the fire. We developed an ultra-high pressure hose aiming at a pressure of 3 MPa and a flow rate of 2000 lpm and developed an ultra-high pressure fire hose that can withstand this very high pressure by using a double jacket, triple polyurethane coating and warf (Wp) of 52. In order to ensure the performance of the developed ultra-high pressure hose, its structure, appearance, leakage at high pressure, length and elongation were inspected by a certified certification agency, who also subjected it to a peeling test, friction test, breaking pressure test and free fall test. Also, it was studied in addition to the luminescent high-pressure hose for fire-fighting. In the phosphorescence test, the luminance measurement value was more than the reference value of the luminance test after 40 minutes, which confirmed that its performance was satisfactory for fire-fighting products. In the future, if such an ultra-high pressure fire hose were commercialized and applied in the field, it could contribute to securing improved fire suppression and safer exit from fires, as compared to the fire hoses currently used in the suppression of fires in skyscraper buildings and long tunnels.

  • In this research, an environmental-friendly foam extinguisher was newly developed using a natural surfactant as its composition. Two criteria were applied to verify its extinguishing performance and environmental attraction. One is unit 2 model by "Standards of Model Approval and Inspection Technology for Portable Fire Extinguishers" presented in Korea Fire Equipment Inspection Corporation. The other is Terrestrial Plants, Growth Test and Fish, Acute Toxicity Test presented in Korea Institute of Toxicology(Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology). Test results showed that the extinguishing performance was 5 unit of general fire Class A, the $LC_{50}$ by germination was 75(g/kg) and the $EC_{50}$ by growth was 62(g/kg) through Terrestrial Plants, Growth Test, and also the toxicity was 6658 ppm in Fish, Acute Toxicity Test. The numerical values were highly evaluated than other fire extinguishing agents being commercialized in domestic. The results also showed suitably in basic physical properties and anti-corrosion properties for making use of fire extinguishing agent.

  • In this study, we looked into the method to establish fire growth rate by buildings use for growing fire at the beginning of a fire considering the characteristics of the combustibles in a performance-based design. Actual conditions survey and literature review were carried out for the fire load and exposed surface area of combustibles to establish design fire by domestic building use. As a results, a simplified prediction equation of fire growth rate which depends on fire load and weight of combustibles could be derived by calculating the relation between the fire load and the fire growth rate of an initial fire through investigation of combustibles by domestic building use. Also, as a result of analyzing the placement of combustibles and location of the ignition source, it was found that the influence of the materials of the combustibles and the materials of the combustibles adjacent to the ignition source is big. Though 4 different experiments were carried out for the evaluation, the result of comparing the findings with those of FGR model showed that the fire growth rate was similarly derived.

  • A large-scale fire test was done for interior materials from a vehicle installed within a fire test room. The interior materials are satisfied with the Korean guide for the safety of rail vehicle. The guide has taken effect since December 2004 in Korea. Ignition source (gas burner) was increased in several controlled steps. The objectives of this test are to assess the fire performance in terms of ignition and flame spread on interior lining materials and to provide data on an enclosure fires involving train interior materials that grow to flashover. This data will be used to develop and calibrate an Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) model for fire growth on the interior vehicle.
