  • An anomalous magnetoresistance effect has been observed at very low temperatures for composite normal metal conductors. This anomalous behavior is due to transverse Hall currents in the composite which would result in increased $I^2R$ losses and a higher effective resistance for the composite conductor. In this paper, transverse current flow and effective resistance of Cu-Al double-strip was analyzed using finite element method for predicting the Hall losses to be resulted in anomalous magnetoresistance effect, and then be able to visualized.

  • The major object in this report is the curvature prediction of front end downward bending in plate rolling. Because of relations front end shape and curvature in plate, many simulations were carried out to obtain empirical model. Simulation conditions, for example the position and the size of bottom stripper or roller table etc., were limited to the POSCO conditions. Though the result in this report can be applied to the special case, the tendency of this result is similar to the many cases. So the empirical model equation can be improved or expanded to many simulation conditions.

  • The present work focuses on the prediction of birefringence in injection-molded part and its improvement by rapid mold heating. To calculate birefringence, flow-induced residual stress is computed through a fully three-dimensional injection molding analysis. Then the stress-optical law is applied from which the order of birefringence can be evaluated and visualized. The birefringence patterns are predicted for a rectangular plate with a variation of mold temperature, which shows that the amount of molecular orientation and birefringence level decreases with an increase of mold temperature. The effect of mold temperature on the order of birefringence is also studied for a thin-walled rectangular strip, and the relevant results are compared with experimental measurements. Both predicted and experimental patterns of birefringence are in agreements on the observation that the birefringence level diminishes significantly when the mold temperature is raised over the glass transition temperature.

  • This paper describes the development and evaluation of an innovative TDR distributed moisture sensor. This sensor features advantages of being responsive to the spatial variations of the soil moisture content. The geometry design of the sensor makes it rugged for field installation. Good linear calibration is obtained between the sensor measured dielectric constant and soil physical properties. Simulations by the finite element method (FEM) are conducted to assist the design of this sensor and to determine the effective sampling range. Compared with conventional types of moisture sensor, which only makes point measurement, this sensor possesses distributed moisture sensing capability. This new sensor is not only easy to install, but also measures moisture distribution with much lower cost. This new sensor holds promise to significantly improve the current field instruments. It will be a useful tool to help study the influence of a variety of moisture-related phenomena on infrastructure performance.

  • Stiffened plates, mostly used in the major part of ship and airplane structures, have been studied by various way-theoretical and experimental. In case of the fore and aft parts of the parallel middle body of ship structure, the stiffeners are not right-angled to the plate but acute angled. This paper presents the analysis of plates having included stiffeners by Finite Strip Method. The results of calculation show the influence of inclined angle which is less than $10^{\circ}$is ignorable. It is recommended that, when the inclined angle is over $20^{\circ}$, the section modulus of stiffener should be increased.

  • This paper presents numerical results of the added mass and damping coefficients of vertical axisymmetric bodies on or under the free surface. Also computed are the excitation forces on these bodies due to an incident regular wave system. The numerical scheme employs a localized finite-element method, which is based on the theory of the calculus of variations. The excitation forces and moments on a submerged half-spheroid lying on the bottom are computed and compared with the results obtained by others. he agreement is good. Several specific types of floating vertical axisymmetric platforms are considered for ten different wave lengths, in connection with the design of an ocean-thermal-energy converter platform. The added mass and damping coefficient, as well as the excitations, are presented. It is shown that simple strip theory gives a good approximation of the sway(and pitch) added mass for a disc platform having a long circular cylinder.

  • In order to simulate the line heating process which is a three-dimensional transient thermo elastic plastic state, a simple modified strip model is suggested. First attempt is made to verify the validity of the model using a finite element program, and the result gives good agreement with the plate theory where conventional two-dimensional model fails totally.

  • Elastic and in-elastic buckling stress analyses are executed by the semi-analytical finite strip method to study the effect of the longitudinal stiffener on the web of box girders. The simple analysis procedure is based on the assumption that the vertical stiffeners has the rigidity enough to force nil deflection line on the web panel so that the boundary condition may be regarded as a hinge. The provisions on the longitudinal stiffeners in plate girders of the Korean Standard Highway Bridge Specifications(1992) are investigated through comparison with the results obtained for various web stiffener size of box girders of the medium span length bridges.

  • Fatigue crack propagation life of weld toe crack through residual stress field was estimated with Elber's crack concept. Propagation of weld toe crack is heavily influenced by residual stress caused by welding process, so it is essential to take into account the effect of residual stress on the propagation life of weld toe crack. Fatigue crack at transverse and longitudinal weld toe was studied respectively, which represent typical weld joint in ship structure. Numerical and experimental studies are performed for both cases. Residual stress near weldment was estimated through nonlinear thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method, and residual stress intensity factor with Glinka's weight function method. Effective stress intensity factor was calculated with Newman-Forman-de Koning-Henriksen equation which is based on Dugdale strip yield model in estimating crack closure level U at different stress ratio. Calculated crack propagation life coincided well with experimental results.

  • The aeroelastic stability analysis of composite bearingless rotors is investigated using a large deflection beam theory in hover. The bearingless rotor configuration consists of a single flexbeam with a wrap-around type torque tube and the pitch links located at the leading edge and trailing edge of the torque tube root. For the analysis of composite bearingless rotors, flexbeam is assumed to be a rectangular section made of laminate. Two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory and Loewy's aerodynamic theory with the lift deficiency function are used for unsteady aerodynamic computation. The finite element equations of motion for beams are obtained using Hamilton's principle. Numerical results of selected bearingless rotor configurations are obtained for the lay-up of laminae in the flexbeam and pitch links location.
