A finite volume radiation solution method was applied to a non- orthogonal coordinate system for the analysis of radiative-convective heat transfer about a circular cylinder in crossflow. The crossflow Reynolds number based on the cylinder radius was 20, and the fluid Prandtl number was 0.7. The radiative heat transfer coupled with convection was reasonably predicted by the finite volume radiation solution method. The investigation includes the effects of conduction- to-radiation parameter, optical thickness, scattering albedo and cylinder wall-emissivity on heat transfer about the cylinder. As the conduction- to-radiation parameter decreases, the radiative heat transfer rate increases and conduction rate as well due to the increase in temperature gradient on the cylinder wall which is caused by radiation enhancement. With an increase in the optical thickness, the Nusselt number increases significantly and the temperature gradient shows similar behavior. Though the radiative heat transfer increases with the scattering albedo, the total heat transfer decreases. This is because the decrease in the conduction heat transfer exceeds the increase in the radiation heat transfer. As the wall- emissivity increases, the radiation absorbed in the vicinity of the cylinder wall increases and thereby the total heat transfer increases, even though the conduction heat transfer decreases.
The flow structure around the free end of a finite circular cylinder (FC) embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over open terrain was investigated experimentally with varying the free end shape. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return type subsonic wind tunnel. A finite cylinder with an aspect ratio (L/D) of 6 was mounted vertically on a long flat plate. The Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is about Re=7,500. The velocity fields near the FC free end were measured using the single-frame double-exposure PIV method. As a result, for the FC with a right-angled free end, there is a peculiar vortical structure, showing counter-rotating twin vortices near the FC free end. It is caused by the interaction between the entrained irrotational fluids from both sides of FC and the downwash flow from the FC free-end.
In general, FDM(finite difference method) and FVM(finite volume method) are used for analyzing the fluid flow numerically. However it is difficult to apply them to problems involving complex geometries, multi-connected domains, and complex boundary conditions. On the contrary, FEM(finite element method) with coordinates transformation for the unstructured grid is effective for the complex geometries. Most of previous studies have used commercial codes such as KIVA or STAR-CD for the flow analyses in the engine cylinder, and these codes are mostly based on the FVM. In the present study, using the FEM for three-dimensional, unsteady, and incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, the velocity and pressure fields in the engine cylinder have been numerically analyzed. As a numerical algorithm, 4-step time-splitting method is used and ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is adopted for moving grids. In the Piston-Cylinder, the calculated results show good agreement in comparison with those by the FVM and the experimental results by the LDA.
Direct simulations of aerodynamic sound, especially sound emitted by rapidly rotating elliptic cylinder by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). Effect of pile-fabrics for noise reduction is also studied by the finite volume LBM (FVLBM) using an unstructured grid. Second order time integration and third order upwind scheme are shown to be enough for these simulations. Sound sources are detected to be doublets for both cases. For the elliptic cylinder, the doublet is generated in the interaction between the vortex and the edge. For the circular cylinders, they are generated synchronizing with the Karman vortex street, and it is also shown that the pile-fabrics covering the surface of the cylinder reduces the strength of the source.
This paper presents the variations obtained in heat flow rate and engine performance of a four-stroke cycle Diesel engine when there were changes in the temperature of cooling water, compression ratio, injection timing of fuel, and other factors. Heat dissipation of engine cylinder was calculated by the heat transfer coefficient of Nusselt's empirical equation and the analysis of distribution of temperature in cylinder barrel was obtained by the finite element method of two-dimensional steady state heat conduction. In this experiment, the out side temperature of cylinder liner was measured by the data logger, and the temperature distribution of liner was computed by the analysis of triangular finite element model under the assumption due to surface heat flux of cylinder inner surface. The results obtained by this study are as follows. Under the given operating condition, the temperature distribution of cylinder liner by using finite element method shows that the mean temperature of barrel is in accordance with the experimental results of Eichelberg and temperature difference is lower than 4.23.deg. C. The heat dissipation of engine decrease in accordance with the decrease of piston mean velocity, compression ratio, and the increase of coolant temperature. Influence on the delay of injection timing of fuel brings about the decrease of heat rejection over the cylinder at constant test conditions.
In this research, a numerical simulation for the acoustic sounds around a two-dimensional circular cylinder in a uniform flaw was developed, using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann model. We examine the boundary condition, which is determined by the distribution function concerning density, velocity, and internal energy at the boundary node. Pressure variation, due to the emission of the acoustic waves, is very small, but we can detect this periodic variation in the region far from the cylinder. Daple-like emission of acoustic waves is seen, and these waves travel with the speed of sound, and are synchronized with the frequency of the lift on the cylinder, due to the Karman vortex street. It is also apparent that the size of the sound pressure is proportional to the central distance to the circular cylinder. The lattice BGK model for compressible fluids is shown to be a powerful tool for the simulation of gas flaws.
Finite element analysis was performed to analyze structural safety of a new heavy-duty direct injection diesel engine. A half section of the in-line 6-cylinder engine was selected as a computational domain. A mapping method was used to project heat transfer coefficients from CFD results of engine coolant flow onto the FE model. The accurate setting of thermal boundary condition on the FE model was expected to result in improved prediction of temperature, cylinder bore distortion, and stresses. Characteristics of high cycle fatigue were investigated by assuming the engine was operated under the following five loading conditions repeatedly; assembly force, assembly force with thermal loading, alternating maximum gas pressure loading at each cylinder combined with assembly force and thermal loading. Distribution of fatigue safety factor was calculated by using it Haigh diagram in which the maximum and the minimum stresses were selected from the five loading cases.

The frequency-pressure relationship of the cylinder, within 0-3.0Mpa, is studied by making use of the finite element method (FEM). Based on numerical calculations of FEM and the actual working conditions of the cylinder pressure transducer, this paper presents the optimizing results of the length, the radius and the thickness of the cylinder. Moreover, this paper gives some more important points on designing the whole structure of the cylinder and on reality of the transducer system. The obtained results are of important theoretical bases for developing the cylinder pressure transducer of 0-3.0Mpa.
In this study, the thermal behavior characteristics of the cylinder block of a small 3-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline engine were analyzed, using the 3-dimensional finite element method. Before numerical analyses were conducted, the performance test and the heat transfer experiment of the engine were carried out in order to prepare the input data for the computations. Engine cycle simulation was performed to obtain the heat transfer coefficient and the temperature of the gas and the mean heat transfer coefficient of coolant. Temperature fields as a result of steady-state heat transfer were obtained and compared with experimental results measured at specific points of the inner and the outer walls of the cylinder block. The thermal stress and deformation characteristics resulting from the nonuniform temperature distributions of the block were investigated. The effects of the thermal behaviors of the cylinder block on the engine operations and the unfavourable aspects of excessive thermal loading were examined on the basis of the calculated results.
In this study the cylinder liner deformation which is one of the most influencing factors in a diesel engine oil consumption was performed by the finite element analysis on the basic designed structure consisting of the cylinder block, head and liners under the conditions of assembly, thermal and gas loads. Compared with a large number of other cylinder blocks showing remarkable harmonic orders of the liner distortion, results are excellent. Namely. the higher harmonic order amplitudes of the radial liner deformation amount to 1 ~ 2㎛ maximally. The main reason lies in the relatively large wall thickness of the liner which amounts to 8.2% of the bore diameter. Besides, a very stiff and symmetrical cylinder block design in combination with a bolt force introduction approximately 1.5mm below the block top deck have a further share on these results. Therefore excellent low oil consumption can be expected.
