  • The investigations have been carried out to study the characteristics of limestone using in Korean cement industry with prime interests in the dissociation and thermal phase changes of limestone between 90$0^{\circ}C$ and 140$0^{\circ}C$ The range of decomposition temperature of limestone was 840-87$0^{\circ}C$ and it was considered that the temperature was lowered by impurities in the limestone. The more the impurities and the finer the grain size of quartz in limestone the lower temperature was applied in forming $C_2S$ mineral the temperature of about 100$0^{\circ}C$. The major clinker minerals such as $C_3S$, $C_2S$, $C_3A$ and $C_4AF$ were formed in most of limestone when the firing temperature was up to 130$0^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to improve adhesion of electroless copper deposits on alumina substrates, some stabilizers such as 2-Mercapto Benzothiazole, thiourea and NaCN were added over a wide range of concentrations. The adhesion tests of the deposits were performed by using the cellophane tape and the push-pull scale. With the minor addition of the stabilizers, 2-MBT having a large molecular size gives poor adhesion, together with a finer grain structure, whereas Thiourea and NaCN show a high mechanical strength of the deposits. The high mechanical strength is supposed to be due to the easy desorption of hydrogen gas generated from the electroless reactions. A large amount of the three stabilizers decreases the adhesion for all the cases, resulting from strong adsorption of the stabilizers to the substrates.

  • Semisolid A356 slurries were prepared by electromagnetic stirring casting and by inoculation of Al-5Ti-B master alloy. As stirring time and addition of Al-5Ti-B are different, the grain size of the primary phase is different. Through the experiment of rheocast in a Buhler horizontal die casting machine, it was found that the finer the equiaxed primary dendrites, the smoother the die filling and better cast quality. Small equiaxed primary dendrite also results in less liquid segregation on the surface.

  • Sound velocities and attenuation coefficients of marine surface sediments were calculated from insitu acoustic experiments on 4 nearshore areas off Pohang, Pusan Yeosu, and Kunsan around the Korean Peninsula. The relationship between these values and physical properties of sediments was examined and attenuation mechanism was analysed using the estimated gas content. Sound velocities and attenuation coefficients ranging from 1470 to 1616 m/sec and 0.0565 to 0.6604 dB/kHz-m, respectively, are well related to sediment types. The attenuation coefficient is maximum in coarse silts, and the sound velocity increases with density. The gas content estimated less than 8 ppm increases with the decreasing sediment grain size. When the sediment size is greater than fine sand, sound attenuation is mostly due to friction losses, and probably negligible viscous loss remains unchanged with the varying physical properties of sediments. The maximum attenuation in coarse silts result from both friction loss and cohesion of finer sediments between the contacts of silt grains. The cohesion begins to be the dominant dissipative process with decreasing grain size from medium and fine silts.

  • Environmental monitoring was conducted to identify the characteristics and patterns of sedimentary environments of tidal flats in 12 areas on the west coast of Korea. The habitat of the mud shrimp Upogebia major contained higher organic and mud contents compared to the habitat of the manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. In particular, the mud content increased from 84.38% to 89.18% in the Seongam-4 area, where the mud shrimp and manila clam coexist, and the mean grain size exhibited a finer particle size, from 5.48 Φ to 5.80 Φ. In the mud shrimp habitat, the sediment mud content was > 60% and the mean grain size was > 5 Φ. Additionally, the mud shrimp only inhabited open coast tidal flat areas. The management of shellfish aquaculture farms by physical methods should be continued based on comparison of the sedimentary environments in the Boryeong and Seongam areas in response to the damage to the mud shrimp habitat.

  • The mechanical properties of ferrite-martensited dual phases steels are affected by the microstructural factors, such as martensited volume fractions, ferrite grain size, strength ratio, connectivity, etc. Two phase alloys are technologically important. However, there is a lack of understanding as to stress-strain behavior of dual phase alloy in terms of stress-strain behavior of each component phases. The lack of the understanding stems from the complex deformation behavior of two phase alloys. The aim of this study is to rationalize stress-strain behavior of dual phase alloy in terms of the stress-strain behavior of component phase by systematically considering all the factors listed above. It was found that for a given martensite volume fraction, the calculated stress-strain curve was higher for a finer particles size than for a coarse particle sized within the range of the strains considered, and this behavior was seen for all the different volume fraction alloys considered. The calculated stress-strain curves were compared with corresponding experimental curves, and in general, good agreement was found. The maximum difference in flow stress between the calculated and the experimental results occurs at the nearly beginning of the plastic deformation.

  • Grain size distributions of sediment samples were analyzed by the different methods, and the results were compared. Reported data of the bottom sediments from the Korean seas show significant deviations among the institutes, and the inter-lab comparison and calibration procedures are considered to be necessary. Grain size data by different methods show different results. Laser diffraction method provides good precision in replicate analysis, but underestimates the amounts of finer (smaller than 2-3 ${\mu}m$) fraction. Data from particle settling method, on the other hand, represent significant errors in the coarse silt (5-6 ${\phi}$) fraction, and slightly overestimate the clay fraction. In the sieve and pipette methods, best results were taken in 0.5 ${\phi}$ interval of analysis. Especially in the coarse silt fraction, pipette analysis is suggested to be made with 0.5 ${\phi}$ interval. During the dry sieving procedure in 1 ${\phi}$ interval, serious errors occur when large amounts of sample materials were concentrated in a particular sieve.

  • The sintering behavior and mechanical property of Mo nanopowder was investigated as a function of various sintering condition. Mo oxide nanopowders were milled using a high energy ball-milling process. After the ball milling for 20h, the crystalline size of $MoO_3$ was about 20 nm. The $MoO_3$ nanopowders were reduced at the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ without holding time in $H_2$ atmosphere. The sinterability of Mo nanopowder and commercial Mo powder was investigated by dilatometric analysis. Mo nanopowder and commercial Mo powder were sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hand $1500^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, respectively. In both specimens the measured relative density was about 95%. But the measured hardness values were 2.34 GPa for nanopowder and 1.87 GPa for commercial powder. Probably due to finer grain size of the sintered body prepared from Mo nanopowder than that prepared using commercial Mo powder. The mean grain sizes were measured to be about 1.4 mm and 6.2 mm, respectively.

  • This study deals with the microstructure and tensile properties of 600 MPa-grade seismic reinforced steel bars fabricated by a pilot plant. The steel bar specimens are composed of a fully ferrite-pearlite structure because they were air-cooled after hot-rolling. The volume fraction and interlamellar spacing of the pearlite and the ferrite grain size decrease from the center region to the surface region because the surface region is more rapidly cooled than the center region. The A steel bar specimenwith a relatively high carbon content generally has a higher pearlite volume fraction and interlamellar spacing of pearlite and a finer ferrite grain size because increasing the carbon content promotes the formation of pearlite. As a result, the A steel bar specimen has a higher hardness than the B steel bar in all the regions. The hardness shows a tendency to decrease from the center region to the surface region due to the decreased pearlite volume fraction. On the other hand, the tensile-to-yield strength ratio and the tensile strength of the A steel bar specimen are higher than those of the B steel bar with a relatively low carbon content because a higher pearlite volume fraction enhances work hardening. In addition, the B steel bar specimen has higher uniform and total elongations because a lower pearlite volume fraction facilitates plastic deformation caused by dislocation slip.

  • Changes in microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-1.0Al-1.0Zn-0.2Mn-0.5Ca (AZMX1100) alloy sheet manufactured by normal casting and twin roll casting process, were studied according to process and heat treatment. Non-uniform microstructure was observed in the initial sheet produced through both processes, and in particular, tilted dendrites and shifted central segregation were observed in the twin roll casting sheet. It was homogenized through hot rolling and heat treatment, and heat treated at 350℃ and 400℃ to compare the effect of heat treatment temperature. Both sheets were homogenized by the hot rolling process, and the grain size increased as the heat treatment temperature and time increased. It was confirmed that the grain size, deviation, and distribution of the second phase were finer and more homogenized in the TRC sheet. Accordingly, mechanical properties such as hardness, formability, and tensile strength also showed better values. However, unlike other previously reported AZMX alloy systems, it showed low formability (Erichsen value), which was judged by the influence of Al2Ca present in the microstructure.
