  • An optimum route to synthesize $Al_2O_3$-based composite powders with homogeneous dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was investigated. CNTs/Metal/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite powders were fabricated by thermal chemical vapor deposition of $C_2H_2$ gas over metal/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite catalyst prepared by selective reduction of metal oxide/$Al_2O_3$ powders. The FT-Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the CNTs have single- and multi-walled structure. The CNTs with the diameter of 25-43 nm were homogeneously distributed in the metal/$Al_2O_3$ powders, and their characteristics were strongly affected by a kind of metal catalyst and catalyst size. The experimental results show that the composite powder with required size and dispersion of CNTs can be realized by control of synthesis condition.

  • The thermal plasma process has excellent characteristics such as high temperature, high chemical activity and rapid quench, and has been applied to various fields. In this review, we briefly describe the characteristics for the process and the system components for producing ultra-fine powders including metal, ceramic, and composites. The key technology for the process will be discussed. We aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of the process for producing high quality ultra-fine powders using thermal plasma.

  • Homogeneous and fine powders for Bi-2223 tape were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (SP) method from an aqueous solution of metal nitrates. Bi-2223 precursor powders were synthesized with various solutes concentration and pyrolysis temperature. The synthesized precursor powders had a narrow particle size distribution and an average particle size was $\~{\cal}um$. The reactivity of precursor powder by SP method is very high, attributed to the fine and narrow particle size distribution. Bi-2223/Ag tape was prepared using PIT method and followed by various sintering conditions. The precursor powder by SP method promoted a very quick formation of the Bi-2223 phase for short sintering time while the secondary phase such as large AEC phase and $Ca_2PbO_4$ were minimized for SP tapes.

  • Monodispersed alumina-zirconia fine powders were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of alkoxides. These powders and the sintered bodies were characterized. Aluminium alkoxide and zirconium alkoxide were dissolved into complex solvent with butanol and n-propanol, and by acetonitrile added hydrolytic solution, hydrolysis rate was controlled. The oil, as a dispersant, was added in hydrolytic solution, and then prepared powders were nano-sized and well-monodispersed. In the case of hydroxypropyl celluose (HPC) as a dispersant, it was added in complex solution with butanol and iso-propanol, sub-micrometer sized and well-monodispersed powders could be prepared. The value of relative density (R.D.) and tetragonal phase fraction of zirconia in the sintered body made by nano-meter sized powders were respectively higher than those in the case of sub-micrometer sized one.

  • Ultra-fine hydroxyapatite powder were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction at 10 atm, 3 hrs of Ca(OH)2 suspension with (NH4)2HPO4 solution, and were characterized sintering behavior. Sintered bodies of hydroxyapatite powders which synthesized by hydrothermal reaction method has less weight loss, less sintering shrinkage and superior mechanical property, and was more dense than sintered bodies of hydroxyapatite powder which synthesized by wet method. Sintered bodies were hydroxyapatite single phase. When soack in Ringer's solution for 2 weeks, hydroxyapatite powders preserved hydroxyapatite and sintered body absorbed trace of Ca2+ ion with soaked time.

  • Fine-sized $Gd_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor powders were prepared by post-treatment of the precursor powders with hollow shape obtained by spray pyrolysis from the spray solution with citric acid and flux material. Citric acid enabled the synthesis of fine-sized phosphor powders after post-treatment by increasing the hollowness of the precursor powders. The phosphor powders prepared from the spray solution without citric acid had several microns size. Flux materials increased the mean sizes of the phosphor powders. However, flux materials improved the photoluminescence intensities of the phosphor powders under ultraviolet. $Li_2CO_3$ as the flux material was appropriate to prepare the fine-sized $Gd_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor powders with high photoluminescence intensity. The phosphor powders below 3 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ of phosphor had submicron sizes after post-treatment temperatures of $1,050^{\circ}C$ and $1,150^{\circ}C$. The photoluminescence intensity of the phosphor powders post-treated at $1,150^{\circ}C$ was 124% of that of the phosphor powders post-treated at $1,050^{\circ}C$.

  • This study aims at characterizing the rheological properties of uranium oxide powders for nuclear fuel pellets manufacturing. The flowability of these powders must be compatible with a reproducible filling of press molds. The particle size distribution is known to have an impact on the rheological properties and fine particles (<100 ㎛) are suspected to have a detrimental effect. In this study, the impact of the particle size distribution on the rheological properties of UO2 powders was quantified, focusing on the influence of fine particles. Two complementary approaches were used. The first approach involved characterizing the powder in a static state: density, compressibility and shear test measurements were used to understand the behavior of the powder when it is transitioned from a static to a dynamic state (i.e., incipient flow conditions). The second approach involved characterizing the behavior of the powder in a dynamic state. Two zones, corresponding to two characteristic behaviors, were demonstrated for both types of measurements. The obtained results showed the amount of fines should be kept below 10 % wt to ensure a robust mold filling operation (i.e., constant mass and production rate).

  • Ultra-fine hydroxyapatite powders were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of Ca(OH)2 suspension or Ca(NO3)2$.$4H2O solution with (NH4)2HPO4 solution, and the powders were characterized for each synthetic condition. Crystalline hydroxyapatite powders have average grain size of less than 50 nm. By increasing the reaction pressure, the crystallinity was improved, and the crystals were preferentially growing along c-axis. When Ca(NO3)2$.$4H2O of high solubility was used, hydroxyapatite of single phase was produced. However when Ca(OH)2 of low solubility was used more than 0.334 mol/ι, unreacted Ca(OH)2 remained. Diffraction spot patterns of transmission electron microscope show that powders synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction were composed of single crystals of hexagonal phase.

  • This study was intended to evaluate the properties of concrete incorporating stone powders which are created during crushing natural stones to produce crushed aggregates. For concretes with 0~30 wt.% partial replacement fine aggregates with stone powders, experiments of slump, air content, strength and drying shrinkage were carried out. The experiments found that the increase of the amount of stone powders sharply decreased slump and air content. Partially using stone powders instead of fine aggregates was found to increase both compressive and tensile strength slightly. Substituting higher amount of stone powders presented higher drying shrinkage. When HRWRA was added into the concrete with stone powders in order to obtain workability similar to that of plain concrete without stone powders for the same water-cement ratio and unit weight of cement, air content increased with the amount of HRWRA but strength and drying shrinkage were hardly affected by adding HRWRA.

  • Fine, spherical (Zr, SN)TiO4 powders were prepared from the aqueous solution of metal chlorides by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Single phase (Zr, SN)TiO4 powders could be obtained above $700^{\circ}C$ (=temperature of the reactor) and all powders exhibited sizes in the range of 0.1 to 2.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and a narrow size distribution. The sintering properties of the prepared powders were better than those of the powders from solid-state reaction.
