  • Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of P/M 6061 Al alloy subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were investigated. The P/M 6061 Al alloy had an intial grain size of approximately $20\mutextrm{m}$. An equiaxed ultra-fine grained structure with the mean grain size of $~50 \mutextrm{m}$ was obtained by four repetitive ECAP at 473 K. The microhardness of P/M 6061 Al alloy was drastically increased from about 40 Hv to 80 Hv by two repetitive ECAP at 373 K. However, the microhardness decreased with increasing ECAP temperature. The tensile stength of as-hot-pressed P/M 6061 Al alloy before ECAP was 95 MPa, whereas it increased to both 248 MPa after two repetitive ECAP at 373 K and 130 MPa after four repetitive ECAP at 473 K. The tensile properties of the ECAPed sample were compared with those of commercial cast 6061-O and 6061-T4 Al alloys.

  • Ultra-fine grained and dispersion-strengthened titanium materials (Ti-Si, Ti-C, Ti-Si-C) have been produced by high energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Silicon or/and carbon were milled together with the titanium powder to form nanometer-sized and homogeneously distributed titanium silicides or/and carbides as dispersoids, that should prevent grain coarsening during the SPS compaction and contribute to strengthening of the material. The microstructures and the mechanical properties showed that strength, hardness and wear resistance of the sintered materials have been significantly improved by the mechanisms of grain refinement and dispersion strengthening. The use of an organic fluid as carrier of the dispersoid forming elements caused a significant increase in ductility.

  • The refinement of microstructure and phase transformation near the interface of pure copper/carbon steel dissimilar metals joints with various friction welding parameters have been studied in this paper. The microstructure of copper and carbon steel joints were changed to be a finer grain compared to those of the base metals due to the frictional heat and plastic deformation. The microstructure of copper side experienced wide range of deformed region from the weld interface and divided into very fine equaxied grains and elongated grains. Especially, the microstructures near the interface on carbon steel were transformed from ferrite and pearlite dual structure to fine ferrite, grain boundary pearlite and martensite due to the welding thermal cycle and rapid cooling rate after welding. These microstructures were varied with each friction welding parameters. The recrystallization on copper side is reason for softening in copper side and martensite transformation could explain the remarkable hardening region in carbon steel side.

  • The piezoelectric properties of the PT-PZ-PNN system ceramics were investigated depending on the variati on of the grain size. The grain size was varied by sintering temperature, and additive. The effect of the grain size on the electrical, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties was studied with respect to the feasibility of the application for the piezoelectric transformer. Grain size increased as the PMW contents increased. The smaller the particle size used, the smaller the grain size obtained. Specimens are densily sintered. Dielectric and piezoelectric properties are not always improved in proportion to the grain sizes. When he particle size are fine and the grain size are increased properly with the optimum additives, the piezoelectric preperties have good values. the specimen sintered at 1200$\^{C}$ with PMW 2 mol% and MnO$\_$2/ 0.5wt% contents exhibited good piezoelectric properties for a piezoelectric transformer.

  • Refractory materials, such as W and Mo, are very useful elements for use in high-temperature applications. But it is not easy to fabricat pure W and Mo with very high density and retaining very fine grain size because of their high melting point. In this paper, a newly developed method named as resistance sintering under ultra high pressure was use to fabricate pure fine-grained W and Mo. The microstructure was analysis by SEM. The sintering mechanism is primary analyzed. Basic physical property of these sintered pure W and Mo, such as hardness, bend strength, are tested.

  • The nanostructure control of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics can be achieved by using fine starting powder and retardation of grain growth. The spark plasma sintering technique is useful to retard the grain growth by rapid heating. In the present work, the change of microstructure was investigated with emphasis on the particle size of starting powder, the amount of sintering additive and the heating schedule. The rapid heating by spark plasma sintering gave the fine microstructure consisting of equiaxed grains with the same size as starting particles. The spark plasma sintering of $Si_3N_4$ fine powder was effective to control the microstrucutre on nano-meter level.

  • Fine grained AZ31 and AZ61 magnesium alloys produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were tested for investigating tensile and fatigue properties, including microstructure, monotonic tensile flow, fatigue life and crack growth rate. For the two alloys, the yield stress of the ECAPed sample was lower than that of the unECAPed (=as received) sample, because of the fact that the softening effect due to texture anisotropy overwhelmed the strengthening effect due to grain refinement. Grain refinement of the AZ31 and AZ61 alloys through ECAP was found not to be significantly effective in increasing fatigue strength.

  • For expanding the applications and workability of TiAl alloy, elongation is very important property. Fine microstructure is needed for elongation and physical properties of TiAl alloys. In this study, The effects of cyclic heat treatment process for fine microstructure of Ti-46Al-Nb-W-Cr-Si-C alloy, which was made by VAR (vacuum arc remelting) and VIM(vacuum induction melting) centrifugal casting process, was investigated. Cycle heat treatment process was very effective for recrystallization of this TiAl system, which has microstructure size of $50{\sim}100{\mu}m$ through pre-heat treatment, cyclic heat treatment in ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase region and solution heat treatment respectively. Refined grain size was finally confirmed by photos of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.

  • To examine the effects of substratum types on the growth of Caulerpa okamurae, sand surface and sand burial experiments were conducted. Five assimilators (erect fronds) per replicate were cultured for 15 d on the surface of three different treatments: fine sand (200 ㎛), coarse sand (600 ㎛), and no sand (control). Also, three stolons and three assimilators were buried by fine grain or coarse grain sands and incubated for 15 d. In both experiments, other culture conditions included 25℃, 30 μmol photons m-2 s-1, and 16 : 8 h L : D (light : dark). In both experiments, stolon + assimilator-, assimilator-, and stolon-weights were measured. Relative growth rates (RGRs) of stolon + assimilator weights ranged from 0.43 to 1.95% d-1 at no sand and fine sand treatment, respectively. RGRs for the weight of stolon + assimilator and new assimilators were significantly greater on the fine- and coarse sand surface than the control. In the burial experiments, RGRs of stolons (4.28% d-1 at coarse sand and 5.57% d-1 at fine sand, respectively) were significantly greater than those of assimilators (1.38% d-1 at fine sand and 1.82% d-1 at coarse sand, respectively). When stolons were buried, RGRs for assimilators were greater at the fine sand than at the coarse sand treatment. On the other hand, RGRs of buried assimilators for total frond weights and for newly produced stolons were significantly greater at the coarse sands than at the fine sands. In conclusion, C. okamurae grew well with all substrates of sands and showed better growth on fine sands than coarse ones. This result suggests that the growth of stolons and assimilators of C. okamurae is stimulated after stable attachment to the sand substrates by rhizophores. In addition, stolons showed higher growth rates than the assimilators in the sand burial states, indicating that stolons are more tolerant to low light than assimilators of C. okamurae.

  • Al-Ti-C grain refiner form a relatively new alternative to the existing class of Al-Ti-B type grain refiners for achieving fine equiaxed structures in aluminum alloys during casting and solidification. The present study was carried out to investigate the influence of Al-Ti-C master alloys on the grain structure of Al-7Si alloys. The present study also investigates the relationship between grain refining efficiency and concentrations of Fe and Si in hypo-eutectic Al-Si alloys using Al-3Ti-0.13C master alloys. It is found that several parameters affect significantly the grain refining performance in silumin alloys. The present study reports the influence of various parameters such as alloy content, master alloy addition level, melt holding time and superheat on the grain refining efficiency in Al-7Si alloys.
