  • In order to develop the compact and flexible heat exchangers, we made the helically coiled heat exchangers. They can be manufactured with small diameter copper tubes without the need for fins; inner diameter=1.0 mm, straight tube length=1.5 m. The experiments were carried out with the following conditions; evaporation pressure=0.6 MPa, air velocity=0.7 ∼ 1.7 m/s, and working fluid=R-22. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient of heat exchangers were experimented according to the air velocity. The results of heat transfer coefficient show a 35% beneficial increase fur these heat exchangers over the other covered fin-tube heat exchangers. A cooling capacity of about 3 kW was obtained with an air velocity of 1.5 m/s. The distribution header has also been designed fur efficient distribution of refrigerant flow.

  • The objective of this study is to get the basic data for the development of fluidized bed combustor. For this purpose, various rake angles(.theta.=20.deg., 25.deg., 30.deg., 35.deg.) of finned tubes and a smooth tube were installed horizontally in the fluidized bed combustor of 410*250mm. The effect of fluidized bed temperature, superficial velocity in bed, size of bed materials, rake angle of finned tubes on the heat transfer coefficient was experimentally investigated. The following results were obtained. (1) Under the fluidized bed temperature(750.deg. C-900.deg. C), and the gas velocity in bed(1.1-2.8m/sec), The highest heat transfer coefficient was measured with the rake angle of finned tubes was .theta.=25.deg. and .theta.=35.deg. for the average fluidized material particle size of 1.22mm and 1.54mm, respectively. Generally, the heat transfer coefficient of finned tubes is 1.4 to 2.4 times larger than that of smooth tubes. (2) The size of bed materials influences the rake angle of finned tubes which can have the highest heat transfer coefficient. As the temperature in bed gets higher, the effect of the rake angle of finned tubes on the heat transfer coefficient becomes greater.

  • Increasing demands for Electric Resistance Welded pipes of high quality with thick wall require c lose investigations in edge deformation by slitting, strip deformation during break down farming, and difference of circumferential length. In order to obtain good quality of a welding zone, it is necessary to predict the edge shape of the initial strip. The modeling of the multi-pass thick tube roll forming process with rigid plastic finite element method ultra the edge shape prediction of an initial strip with 2nd-degree polynomial regression method are presented. Edge shapes of initial strip have been analyzed by the finite element method and designed by the regression method to satisfy the requirements in target fin pass. It is concluded that the proposed edge design method results in optimal edge shapes sat string the design requirements.

  • R134a is considered as an alternative refrigerant to R22 for air conditioners. An experimental investigation was made to study the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop for R134a flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning units. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ and refrigerant mass fluxes of $150,\;200,\;and\;250\;kg/m^{2}s$. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature or $35^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that air velocity decreased by 5.9% is needed for R134a than that of R22 while pressure drop for R134a was $18.1{\sim}20.4%$ higher than that of R22 for the degree of subcooling $5^{\circ}C$. The results are useful in designing more compact and effective condensers for various refrigeration and air conditioning systems using refrigerant R134a.

  • A separate heat pipe system capacity of 3,700kW has been developed and applied to preheating the blast furnace gas for recovery of the waste heat from boiler. The system is designed to preheat the blast furnace gas up to $126^{\circ}C$ by using tho boiler exhaust gas of which temperature is $180^{\circ}C{\sim}220^{\circ}C$. The arrangement of the fin tubes as well as the shape of the fin has been carefully determined to minimize the fouling problems. The heat pipe system was found to be stable in circulation of the working fluid and the range of the temperature variation of the preheated blast furnace gas was within $10^{\circ}C$. It was proved through a long-term test that the selected tube arrangement and the shape of the fins are proper to prevent the fouling problems and that the pay-back period of the system Is within one year.

  • The effect of inclination angle on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the brazed aluminum heat exchangers is experimentally investigated. Three samples having different fin pitches(1.25, 1.5 and 2.0 mm) were tested. Results show that heat transfer coefficient is not affected by the inclination angle. However, the friction factor increases as the inclination angle increases with negligible difference between the forward and backward inclination. Both the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor are the smallest at $F_p=1.5mm$, followed by $F_p=2.0mm$ and 1.25mm. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver layout. Comparison with existing correlations is also made.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of thermal and geometric conditions on the performance of indoor heat exchanger with R410A for Gas Engine Driven Heat Pump (GHP) application and to find optimum design conditions of indoor heat exchanger by parametric analysis for the key parameters. In the air side, moisture out of the humid air condenses on the fin surface while the refrigerant (R410A) boils inside the smooth tube. Therefore this study uses Log Mean Enthalpy Difference (LMHD) method to analyze the heat transfer from the humid air to the refrigerant of R410A. The results show that fin pitch and longitudinal pitch have significant effect on the heat exchanger preformance. This study will provide the guideline for optimum design of indoor heat exchanger with R410A for GHP application.

  • The flowfield in a solid rocket motor was simulated at the wall-injection test model, which has a fin-slot grain and submerged nozzle, and visualized by a smoke-wire. The high speed CCD camera captured the visualized images around the nozzle inlet through the grain center port. The vortical tube structure and circumferential flow patterns at the nozzle throat were visualized. The radial momentum transfer caused by the shear-interactions of slot-outlet flow, fin-base flow and grain port flow from upstream worked as the source of these phenomena.

  • The use of solar energy among renewable energy tends to increase because of its infinity and cleanness of resources. Even though the consumption rate of solar energy in our country is still low, however, in recent years, the research for solar energy have been widely conducted due to policy support of government. This study was performed to investigate the efficiency of heat collection using solar collector with single evacuated tube-type. As the results, the temperature of radiation fin for solar collector with single evacuated tube-type was lower in spite of high temperature of heat pipe compared that of double evacuated tube-type. In order to increase the efficiency of heat collection, it was confirmed that the loss of heat collection due to contact resistance as well as performance improvement for solar collector should be decreased.
