  • This paper presents the means of controlling the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that is mounted on tactical vehicles to satisfy exhaust gas standards. The DPF captures particulate matter in the exhaust gas and combusts the captured particulate matter. This process is regeneration, which is essential to the normal performance of the DPF. Bad regeneration causes degradation of vehicle performance; worse, it can lead to a vehicle fire. DPF regeneration is performed by control logic. If the regeneration control logic does not properly reflect the operating characteristics of the vehicle, DPF regeneration may not occur. Consequently, it is very important to ensure the DPF operates properly by reflecting the operating characteristics of the tactical vehicle. This study analyzes the operational characteristics of a tactical vehicle and the DPF, and adds proper DPF regeneration control logic. Additionally, this study is intended to simultaneously improve the additional problems that may occur from operating under the added regeneration control logic.

  • An efficient protocol for plant regeneration from protoplasts of the indica rice variety IR43 has been developed. The procedure involved plating of embryogenic suspension-derived protoplasts on the surface of a filter membrane overlaying agarose-embedded feeder cells. Lolium multiflorum cell suspensions were preferable to these of Oryza ridleyi as feeder cells and Lolium suspensions supported colony formation from up to 0.68% of the protoplasts, depending on the age of cell suspensions. Plant regeneration frequency was significantly improved by using maltose alone or in a 1:1(w/w) combination with sucrose as carbohydrate source and a simple dehydration treatment using a high concentration of agarose in the regeneration medium. Medium containing maltose or maltose mixed with sucrose increased the plant regeneration frequency compared with medium containing sucrose alone. The plant regeneration frequency was increased to 30.7 to 70.7% following dehydration treatment, while the non-treated controls showed a regeneration frequency of 3.1 to 30.6%. Protoplast-derived plants were transferred to the glasshouse, flowered with morphologically normal.

  • Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is currently the most widely used arc welding processes in the industry because of its high metal deposition rate, flexibility and low cost. It is attractive for high-productivity manufacturing applications and is well suited to automatic or robotic welding. Welding voltage and current have a significant impact on the weld bead. However, welding voltage and current are changed variously according to welding condition and user environment, and prediction is impossible. To determine the welding conditions, the welding current and voltage are applied to the appropriate data analysis techniques. In this paper, we used the moving average filter to the welding voltage and current data, and normal and abnormal welding waves were distinguished.

  • PIXE( Proton Induced X- ray Emission ) analysis has been applied to the analysis of aerosol for the Purpose of pollution monitoring. Coarse and fine Particle fractions were sampled selectively, using Nuclepore filter in stacked filter units, once a month from February to September in 1993 at urban and rural sites. Concentration of 9 elements, Si, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and Pb was determined without Pretreatment of Samples. Comparison of data between urban and rural site revealed higher elemental concentration level in urban aerosol. From April to May aerosol sampling was carried out daily to observe the effect of Yellow Sand on the composition of aerosol in the Korean Peninsula. During the Yellow Sand period, Si, Ca, Fe content level in aerosol became more than 5 times higher than normal. The elemental concentration of the aerosol samples of Daejeon City was compared with that of two foreign cities. S and Pb( which are fuel- derived elements) levels in Daejeon City aerosol appeared to be lower than those of foreign cities. And it may be due to the leaded-fuel restriction policy of Korean government since 1987.

  • In this paper, we study efficient gene selection methods by using conditional mutual information. We suggest gene selection methods using conditional mutual information based on semiparametric methods utilizing multivariate normal distribution and Edgeworth approximation. We compare our suggested methods with other methods such as mutual information filter, SVM-RFE, Cai et al. (2009)'s gene selection (MIGS-original) in SVM classification. By these experiments, we show that gene selection methods using conditional mutual information based on semiparametric methods have better performance than mutual information filter. Furthermore, we show that they take far less computing time than Cai et al. (2009)'s gene selection but have similar performance.

  • It is important to obtain conn cytodiagnosis to classify background, cytoplasm, and nucleus from the diagnostic image. This study mose an algorithm that detects and classifies carcinoma cells of the uterine cervix in Pap smear using features of cervical cancer. It applies Median filter and Gaussian filter to get noise-removed nucleus area and also applies Kapur method in binarization of the resultant image. We apply 8-directional contour tracking algorithm and stretching technique to identify and revise clustered cells that often hinder to obtain correct analysis. The resulted nucleus area has distinguishable features such as cell size, integration rate, and directional coefficient from normal cells so that we can detect and classify carcinoma cells successfully. The experiment results show that the performance of the algorithm is competitive with human expert.

  • This article provides comprehensive guidance on the maintenance, cleaning, regeneration, and storage of silica-based HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) columns. The general considerations emphasize the importance of using in-line filters and guard cartridges to protect columns from blockage and irreversible sample adsorption. While these measures help, contamination by strongly adsorbed sample components can still occur over time, leading to an increase in back pressure, loss of efficiency, and other issues. To maximize column lifetime, especially with UHPLC (Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography) columns, it is advisable to use ultra-pure solvents, freshly prepared aqueous mobile phases, and to filter all samples, standards, and mobile phases. Additionally, an in-line filter system and sample clean-up on dirty samples are recommended. However, in cases of irreversible compound adsorption or column voiding, regeneration may not be possible. The document also provides specific recommendations for column cleaning procedures, including the flushing procedures for various types of columns such as reversed phase, unbonded silica, bonded normal phase, anion exchange, cation exchange, and size exclusion columns for proteins. The flushing procedures involve using specific solvents in a series to clean and regenerate the columns. It is emphasized that the flow rate during flushing should not exceed the specified limit for the particular column, and the last solvent used should be compatible with the mobile phase. Furthermore, the article outlines the storage conditions for silica based HPLC columns, highlighting the impact of storage conditions on the column's lifetime. It is recommended to flush all buffers, salts, and ion-pairing reagents from the column before storage. The storage solvent should ideally match the one used in the initial column test chromatogram provided by the manufacturer, and column end plugs should be fitted to prevent solvent evaporation and drying out of the packing bed.

  • The damping ratio as an index of bridge vibration could be considered as one of the important dynamic characteristics of a suspension bridge. But estimating of damping ratio on an existing suspension bridge under ambient vibration condition could be a laborious task. Moreover, it is not simple to directly distinguish aerodynamic damping and friction damping from apparent damping. According to previous studies, the aerodynamic damping properties can be linearly affected by wind speed level, and apparent damping ratio can be affected by amplitude of vibration. Therefore, in this article, the relationships among damping ratio, wind speed level and amplitude of acceleration were studied for separating extract aerodynamic damping and friction damping from apparent damping. Damping ratios on Sorok Bridge, a suspension bridge which is a located in Go-Heung, Korea, were estimated by two different methods as using Hilbert transform and extended Kalman filter which were well known as effective estimation methods for non-linear state. It was possible to distinguish aerodynamic damping and friction damping from apparent damping using averaged normal components of wind speed, RMQ values of acceleration, and estimated damping ratios from wind-induced vibration responses and vehicle loading responses.

  • In this paper, a device to analyze gait pattern was developed by using a 2-axis acceleration sensor attached to the foot. The 1st low-pass filter was adapted to limit the frequency band up to 5 Hz. An algorithm to detect the peak value exceeding the threshold voltage of an X-axis acceleration sensor and a Z-axis acceleration sensor was developed and normal and abnormal walking patterns were thus differentiated. Also, MCU and Bluetooth were combined to transfer the data to other MCUs to display on an LCD; the size of the device could then be reduced. The new algorithm and the device allowed the individual walking patterns to be easily measured at a low cost and with less restriction on activities compared to conventional multiple pressure sensors or motion camera system.

  • It is important that the contaminated air is not revealed to the outside of the facility. The inside of the facility should be classified into several zones according to the radioactivity and each zone should maintain tile differential negative pressure between the zones also. It is not easy to equilibrate the pressure during the operation. On the normal operation, the clogging of the HEPA filter and the opening of the doors/shutters influence very much. We could maintain the differential negative pressure between the zones by the constant watching and periodical replacement of the filters.
