A total of 16 Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates collected from 14 dogs admitted to the Veterinary Medicial Teaching Hospital in Seoul National University over eleven months were examined for in vitro antibiotic susceptibility pattern with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and slime production, a virulence-associated phenotype, and were genetically characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The frequency of resistance to antimicrobial agents tested was not high, with a susceptibility ranging from 56.3% to 100%. Three strains exhibited multiple drug resistance against amikacin (MIC, $32-64{\mu}g/ml$), ampicillin ($32{\mu}g/ml$), fosfomycin ($32-128{\mu}g/ml$) and gentamicin ($16{\mu}g/ml$). Vancomycin, ciprofloxacin and rifampin were effective antibiotics against the isolates. All isolates were slime producers ; strains isolated from dogs which died of bacteremia were more likely to produce slime than those isolated from dogs which survived. Chromosomal DNA fingerprinting of the isolates yielded 16 different genomic types with few common bands, indicating a variety of clones of S epidermidis were prevalent in the hospital. This study revealed that PFGE is an useful method for the genotype characterization of S epidermidis strains and this organism could probably be pathogenic in some dogs with severe disorders. Further works on a larger number of epidemiologically defined strains are required to assess these results.
In this study, a prototype remote controlled weeder using solar module was developed and the evaluations of weeding, side walking and weeding performance were conducted to see if actual application was feasible in the paddy field. When traveling, the loss electric current was 8 to 15 A depending on operating and soil conditions. The average traveling speed was 0.25 m/s and the average slippage was 18%. When it side walked row by row, electric current consumption was 7 A on the average. When wheel rotors line went initially up and last down, electric current consumption was 12 to 15 A due to soil resistance. Electric current consumption when shifting wheel rotors line was less than 5 A due to no resistance. Field efficiency was 105 min/10a based on the test field. Operation was able to be done for 4.16 hours continually by 52 AH battery based on 300 W average maximum power consumption and 4.6 hours under sunny day considering solar module.

Recently, micropiling techniques are increasingly applied in foundation rehabilitation/underpinning and seismic retrofitting projects where working space provides the limited access for conventional piling methods. Micropiling techniques provide environmental-friendly methods for minimizing disturbance to adjacent structures, ground, and the environment. Its installation is possible in restrictive area and general ground conditions. The cardinal features that the installation procedures cause minimal vibration and noise and require very low ceiling height make the micropiling methods to be commonly used for underpin existing structures. In the design point of view, the current practice obligates the bearing capacity of micropile to be obtained from skin friction of only rock-socketing area, in which it implies the frictional resistance of upper soil layer is ignored in the design process. In this paper, a new micropiling method and its verification studies via field installation are presented. The new method provides a specific way to grout bore-hole to increase frictional resistance between surrounding soil and pile-structure and it allows to consider the skin friction of micropiles for upper soil layer during design process.

The discoveries of antiferromagnetic coupling in Fe/Cr multilayers by Grunberg, the Giant Magneto Resistance by Fert and Grunberg and a large tunneling magnetoresistance at room temperature by Moodera have triggered enormous research on magnetic thin films and magnetoelectronic devices. Large opportunities are especially opened by the spin dependent tunneling resistance, where a strong dependence of the tunneling current on an external magnetic field can be found. We will briefly address important basic properties of these junctions like thermal, magnetic and dielectric stability and discuss scaling issues down to junction sizes below 0.01 $\mu\textrm{m}$$^2$with respect to single domain behavior, switching properties and edge coupling effects. The second part will give an overview on applications beyond the use of the tunneling elements as storage cells in MRAMs. This concerns mainly field programmable logic circuits, where we demonstrate the clocked operation of a programmed AND gate. The second 'unconventional' feature is the use as sensing elements in DNA or protein biochips, where molecules marked magnetically with commercial beads can be detected via the dipole stray field in a highly sensitive and relatively simple way.

The performance and durability of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are strongly influenced by the uniformity of current density, temperature, species distributions inside a cell In order to obtain uniform distributions in them, the optimal design of flowfield must be a key factor. In this paper, the numerical study of land/channel flowfield optimizations is performed, using a multi-dimensional, multi-phase, non-isothermal PEFC model. Numerical simulations reveal more uniform current density and HFR(High Frequency Resistance) distributions and thus better PEFC performance with narrower land/channel width where the less severe oxygen depletion effect near the land region and more uniform contact resistance variation along the in-plane direction are achieved. The present study elucidates detailed effects of land/channel width and assist in identifying optimal flow-field design strategies for the operation of PEFCs.

In this study, seven companies(A~G) designated as new construction technology selected and evaluated KS F 2622: Method of test for performance evaluation of membrane roofing systems that are similar to field application conditions. As a result of the test, it was confirmed that although all test specimens exceeded KS standards in the basic physical, it was difficult to obtain field quality performance in weak areas such as joints and vertical parts of the adhesive coating method in water-tightness, sagging resistance, swelling resistance tests except for fatigue(crack behavior) tests.
Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) recently became a single worst insect which is not controlled effectively by organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides in Kangwon alpine croplands. The objective of this study was to determine if diamondback moth has developed a resistance to organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. Resistance of diamondback moth, collected at Keichon, Jangpyong Taebaek, Chunchon, and Hongchon, was determined by the concentration required to kill fifty percent of population, $LC_{50}$. Their response of resistance varied to insecticides and locations: Taebaek populations were 35 and 70 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than susceptible(S) population. Hongchon populations were 94 and 254 times more resistant to chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion, respectively, than S population. In addition, Chunchon populations were 37 and 19 times more resistant to profenofos and benfuracarb, respectively, than S population. However, the field populations did not differ in resistance to diazinon, phenthoate, flupyrazofos, carbofuran, and furathiocarb. This study show that field populations of diamondback moth found in Kangwon alpine vegetable croplands have developed a resistance and/or multiple resistance to some insecticides, implying that farmers are losing organophosphorus and carbamate insecticide options for selective control in vegetable crops.

Deicer has been generally used for prevention of a road freezing in winter, and the usage amount is increasing every year. However, deicer may induce the decrease of bond strength, surface scaling, and environmental pollution. In this study, the field test was performed to investigate the deterioration of concrete road structures used for 17 years. And, the corrosion resistance characteristics were compared for the existing deicer and eco-friendly deicer. According to the field test results, the penetration depth of limit chloride amount was about 40mm, and the average concentration of chloride was $3.45kg/m^3$ at the surface of structures. On the contrary, the carbonation depth was slight. The penetration depth of eco-friendly deicer was less than the existing deicer, and the corrosion resistance of eco-friendly deicer was higher.
A study was investigated to find out the mechanical optimum conditions of power tiller-plow system on both paddy field and upland. Mathematical model was developed for the theoretical analysis of this system and the experimentation on the field was carried out with two different sizes of 5PS and 8PS power tiller equipped with rubber tire. 1) The relationship between the plowing depth and draft resistance of the power tiller-plow system was a quadratic function. 2) The minimum point of the specific draft resistance of the 5 PS plow was found at the smaller plowing depth than that of 8 PS plow, therefore we can find that the curved surface of 5PS plow bottom should be improved for the effective plowing operation. 3) As the improvement of the mechanical balance by the desirable change of the curved surface of plow bottom, the relative position of hitch point and dimension of plow beam would be realized, the 5 PS power tiller could be used to plow deeply (about 16-17cm). 4) The virtual acting point of the total draft resistance on the plow bottom approached to the land side as the plowing depth increased. 5) The resultant of vertical reaction force $R_2$ on the landside was increased with the plowing depth, while the vertical reaction force $R_1$ on the wheel was decreased as the slope angle of the body of power tiller increased. 6) For the effective plowing operations ; a) The slope angle of the body should be as small as possible. b) The diameter of the wheel should be as small possible. c) The horizontal and vertical distances $l_2, h_1$ between the wheel axis and plow bottom should be as large as possible. 7) To use the 5PS power tiller as the major unit of agricultural machinery, the curved surface of the 5 PS plower bottom and the mechanism of attachment between the power tiller and the plow should be changed as the indications of this study, and in addition to these, the new operation method of the field work should be developed.
This paper reviews current status of weed science in Japanese regional agricultural systems based on the 54th Annual Meeting of the Weed Science Society of Japan. About 300 researchers from 5 countries including Korea participated in the Conference and presented 100 papers in research areas. This congress has an purpose to discuss new troubles, findings and results of weed science. Weed science faces big challenges such as increase in herbicide-resistant weeds, gene-flow from transgenic crops, and invasive weeds. Major research topics were invasive weeds and their ecology, allelopathy, weed management in paddy field, weed management in field crops, and herbicide resistance. Weed control and herbicide resistance management in paddy field were a main object of research. To prevent the increase of problematic weeds and to overcome food crisis, the importance of weed-related researches has been raised. Therefore it is expected that various weed management systems and control of herbicide resistant weeds should be studied continuously in the weed science.
