  • In general, a drilled shaft embedded in weathered rock has a large load bearing capacity. Therefore, most of the load tests are performed only up to the load level that confirms the pile design load capacity, and stopped much before the failure load of the pile is attained. If a reliable failure load value can be extracted from the premature load test data, it will be possible to greatly improve economic efficiency as well as pile design quality. The main purpose of this study is to propose a standard for judging the reliability of the failure load of piles that is obtained from extrapolated load test data. To this aim, eleven static load test data of load-displacement curves were obtained from testing of piles to their failures from 3 different field sites. For each load-displacement curve, loading was assumed as 25%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of the actual pile bearing capacity. The limited known data were then extrapolated using the hyperbolic function, and the failure load was re-determined for each extrapolated data by the ASCE 20-96 method (1997). Statistical analysis was performed on the reliability of the re-evaluated failure loads. The results showed that if the ratio of the maximum-available displacement to the failure-load displacement exceeds 0.6, the extrapolated failure load may be regarded as reliable, having less than a conservative 20% error on average. The applicability of the proposed standard of judgment was also verified with static load test data of driven piles.

  • At present, the ground anchor method is commonly applied to securing the slope stability in Korea. The ground anchor is reported to decrease in tensile load due to aging and environmental influences with time such as corrosion, relaxation, creep and so on. In Korea, the lift-off test is performed for the periodic inspection or cases when the symptoms of deterioration on anchors and the residual tensile load of the anchors is checked. However, the current lift-off test standard (MOLIT, 2010) is not fully specified in details. In this study, the factors affecting the lift-off test were investigated based on the previous research and foreign standards and lift-off tests were performed with consideration for the loading and unloading cycle, load increment method, and tensioning tendon method. Based on the results, this paper proposes improved testing and evaluation procedures of the lift-off test considering the workability and time limits in the field.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the rotor of an ac motor. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of a ac motor with HTS bulk rotor. The rotor of a conventional squirrel cage induction motor was replaced with cylinder type YBCO bulk. Height and outer diameter of the HTS bulk was 15mm and 46mm, respectively. Eddy current brake using aluminium disk was used to measure the torque of the HTS motor. No load test, locked rotor test and load test were performed to examine the characteristics of the HTS motor. Test results show the motor can rotate at synchronous speed without any special starting circuit. Maximum output power of the constructed HTS motor was 408W.

  • Institutional inertia anti-disaster standard was presented mainly on the upper surface, it is necessary to improve to the soil type standard and uplift the resistance standard greenhouse that are vulnerable to strong winds. In this study, we carried out a field test using the load control method in order to evaluate the uplift resistance of continuous foundation of greenhouse with different depths of the rafters. Institutional inertia anti-disaster standard of greenhouse foundation did not protect the greenhouse structure from the damages caused by strong winds and heavy snow. Therefore, field tests for behavior characteristics of continuous greenhouse foundation were carried out to ensure stable facility cultivation. The field test condition was evaluated using different embedded depth as follows: 30cm, 40cm, 50cm and spacing 50cm, 60cm, 70 cm. As a result of the uplift resistance field tests using the load control method, the minimum uplift resistance was found to be over 90kg and uplift resistance displacement was 9.4mm. Uplift resistance of the continuous greenhouse foundation was in the range of 90-180 kg according to embedded depth and spacing. Using the test condition, there was no constant trend in the uplift resistance.

  • The characteristic of load-distribution is investigated by using nonlinear analysis with a field loading test of existing bridge In this study, nonlinear load-distribution technique for quantitative analysis was adopted. The results were compared with linear solution technique with data from failure test at existing RCT-girder bridge and examine the adequacy of the failure mode. The results of this study showed that the linear solution technique and the proposed nonlinear solution technique agreed well in linear region but did not matched well in nonlinear region because of load-redistribution, and that the effect of load-redistribution was considered to analysis of nonlinear region by linear solution.

  • A wind tunnel test of a scaled-down model and field measurement were effective methods for elucidating the aerodynamic behavior of a chimney under a wind load. Therefore, the relationship between the results of the wind tunnel test and the field measurement had to be determined. Accordingly, the set-up and testing method in the wind tunnel had to be modified from the field measurement to simulate the real behavior of a chimney under the wind flow with a larger Reynolds number. It enabled the results of the wind tunnel tests to be correlated with the field measurement. The model surface roughness and different turbulence intensity flows were added to the test. The simulated results of the wind tunnel test agreed with the full-scale measurements in the mean surface pressure distribution behavior.

  • In this study, various field and laboratory tests were performed to investigate the characteristics of shear strength and bearing behavior to be considered in the estimation of stability and trafficability in early stage of stabilization process in marine clay dredged deposit. Site characterization was carried out to grasp the basic properties of the deposit. Field vane test, unconfined compression test and direct shear test were conducted to evaluate the shear strength distribution for varied depths, and the characteristics of shear strength and stress-strain behavior of the crust layer. Plate load tests were also performed to estimate the bearing capacity and to assess load-settlement behavior and failure pattern of the deposit. The bearing capacity was also estimated using previously proposed methods for double-layered clay deposit. The estimated bearing capacity was compared with the results of the plate load tests and then, the applicability of the estimation method was discussed.

  • The load distribution and deformation of rock socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads were evaluated by a load transfer approach. The emphasis was laid on quantifying the end bearing load transfer characteristics of rock socketed drilled shafts based on 3D Finite Difference (FD) analysis performed under varying rock strength and rock mass conditions. From the results of FD analysis, it was found that the ultimate unit toe resistance ($q_{max}$) was influenced by both rock strength and rock mass conditions, while the initial tangent of end bearing load transfer curve ($G_{ini}$) was only dependent on rock strength. End bearing load transfer function of drilled shafts socketed in rock was proposed based on the FD analysis and the field loading tests which were performed on weathered rock in South Korea. Through the comparison with the results of the field loading tests, it is found that the load transfer curve by the present study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by field loading tests, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load transfer behavior of drilled shaft.

  • Enhancement of the existing program for analyzing a pile driven by vibro hammer was tried. Damping effect of dynamic soil resistance and clutch friction were added to the existing governing equation which constitute vibrating system of vibro hammer-pile-soil. Parameters of the modified Ramberg-Osgood model which simulates dynamic load transfer curves for the developed program were recomputed. Comparing the results of the modified program with those of the field tests, pile displacement with time and load transfer behavior were more similar to those of the field test. The penetration rates obtained from the modified program were more close to those of the field test rather than those of the commertical program.

  • In this thesis, the field test results of fifty-one highway bridges were analyzed in order to Investigate the primary capacity of load of highway bridges. From this study, it was known that primary capacity of load are decreased with the serviced years, and those are small in T-beam bridges rather than I-beam bridges. And the average primary capacity of load of highway bridges is seemd about 15. 5ton in T-beam bridges and in I-beam bridges about 19.7ton.
