  • Using micro-wells on the Mo substrate, we could obtain various tubular-volcano-types of free-standing diamond field emitters by depositing a diamond film detaching the film and turning the film upside down. The field emission characteristics of these structures were investigated as a function of size, shape and the number density of the tubular-volcano-type diamond field emitters. The field emission characteristics, especially the current density, were greatly enhanced with increasing the number density of the tubular-volcano-type diamond field emitters on the Mo substrate. Based on these results, we suggest that the reduction of the well size can give better field emission characteristics by the increase in the number density of the tubular-volcano-type diamond field emitters. Finally, we suggest the feasibility of fabricating a large-area field emission display using our patterned tubular-volcano-type free-standing diamond field emitters.

  • Vertically-aligned and uniformly-distributed CuO nanowires were formed on copper-coated Si substrates by wet chemical process, immersing them in a hot alkaline solution. The effects of hydrogen plasma treatment on the field emission characteristics of CuO nanowires were investigated. It was found that hydrogen plasma treatment enhanced the field emission properties of CuO nanowires by showing a decrease in turn-on voltage, and an increase in emission current density, and stability of current-voltage curves. However, the excessive hydrogen plasma treatment made the I-V curves unstable. It was confirmed by XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) analysis that hydrogen plasma treatment deoxidized CuO nanowires, thereby the work function of the nanowires decreased from 4.35 eV (CuO) to 4.1 eV (Cu). It is thought that the decrease in the work function enhanced the field emission characteristics. It is well-known that the lower the work function, the better the field emission characteristics. The results suggest that the hydrogen plasma treatment is very effective in achieving enhanced field emission properties of the CuO nanowires, and there may exist an optimal hydrogen plasma treatment condition.

  • The effect of titanium (Ti) coating over the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on field emission characteristics was investigated. Since the work function of CNTs emitter is about 5.0 eV, field emission would be observed at lower voltage if this work function gets lower. Work function of Ti is approximately 4.09eV. Field emission characteristics of as-grown and Ti-coated CNTs were measured in a diode-type configuration. The resultant emission characteristics revealed that thin($50{\AA}$-thick) Ti-coated CNTs could be a better electron emitter with lower emission voltage and higher emission efficiency.

  • The field emission characteristics of diamond films deposited by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) method were investigated. Diamond films were deposited on n-type Si(100) wafer using various mixtures of hydrogen and methane gas, and the I-V characteristics are measured. We observed that the field emission characteristics depend on the $CH_4$ concentration and the diamond film thickness. All the films show remarkable emission characteristics; low turn-on voltage, high emission current density at lower voltage, uniform stable current density, and good stability and reproducibility. The threshold field for producing a current density of 1mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ is found as low as 7.6V/$\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • In this paper, we fabricated the field emitter display using oxidized porous polysilicon(OPPS). Their field emission characteristics and the brightness were investigated for each pixel. The OPPS emitter was operated to each pixel using passive matrix for application of large panel display. We set up the proper thickness and width of upper electrode. The fine structure of OPPS was analyzed and the field emission characteristics of each pixel were investigated. As a result of field emission characteristics of different upper electrode thickness and width, we confirmed that the most efficient thickness was 2nm/7nm and increased the emission efficiency over the width of 2.5 mm. Even if field emission characteristics of each pixel was a little different but we confirmed the same leakage current and emission current, emission efficiency at each pixel. The leakage current and emission current was decreased according to the time increases but all of each pixel were uniformly decreased. We confirmed that the brightness of each pixel was not different and the brightness of OPPS field emitter was 700 cd/m2 at the Vps=20 V. Accordingly, the patterned OPPS field emitter can be applied to high quality field emission display devices.

  • Electron emission from the Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 ferroelectrics by pulsed electric field has been investigated as a function of Zr/Ti ratios such as 35/65, 50/50 and 65/35 below 250kV/cm. Electrons were emitted regardless of the applied field polarity to the rear electrode. When the negative field was applied to the rear electrode, the electron emission charge was more stable. It was proved that the electrons were emitted at the edge of the upper electrode. The emission charge increased in order of 65/35>50/50>35/65. The electron emission characteristics were dependent on the ferroelectric properties such as polarization and coercive field. The emission charge and emission threshold field were affected by the polarization change and the coercive field, respectively. This result explains that the electron emission is a field emission with polarization induced surface potential by a modified Fowler-Nordheim plot of emission charge.

  • The field emission characteristics of defective diamond films grown by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) have been studied. X-ray diffraction, the poor crystal quality and/or small grain sizes of the diamond phase and the inclusion of the non-diamond carbon phases in these films have been condirmed by raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and the reflectance measurements. The degrees of the film defectiveness and the emission characteristics were dependent on the methane concentration. Current-versus-voltage measurements have demonstrated that the defective diamond films have good electron emission characteristics. characteristics strongly suggests the defect-related electron-emission mechanism. The defective diamond films deposited on Si substrates show the field emission current density of 1$\mu\textrm{A}/\textrm{cm}^2$ and 1mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ have been measured at electric fields as low as 4.5V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 7.6V/$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. We also observed the similar emission characteristics from the defective diamond film deposited on Cr/Si substrate and could decrease the deposition temperature to $600^{\circ}C$.

  • Pulse electric field induced electron emission from ferroelectrics has been studied with Pb$(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3$ ceramics with varying Zr/Ti ratio from 35/65 to 65/35, Electron emission was proved to be concentrated on the electrode edge by emission profile test and emission capture photographs. The 65/35 composition showed largest emission charge in lowest field and lowest emission threshold field. The emission characteristics are closely dependent on their ferroelectric properties in hysteresis curve. Electron emission charge increases with the polarization charge and emission threshold voltage is dependent on coercive field regardless of their composition. But dielectric constant has little relation with emission property. Electron emission charge increases exponentially with pulse electric field irrespective of composition. On the assumption that the surface potential is linear with the pulse electric field, electron emission can be regarded as a field emission at the electrode edge using Fowler-Nordheim plot of ln$(Q_e/E_{fe})$ to $1/E_{fe}$.

  • We have studied the field emission characteristics of multi-layered diamond-like-carbon (DLC) films deposited by vertical electrodes type plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition with CH$_4$ and H$_2$ mixture. We deposited a thin layer of DLC on the p$^{+}$-Si substrate and then turned off plasma before another deposition of a new DLC layer. The thickness and the number of DLC layers are varied. The emission characteristics of multi-layered DLC films were compared with conventional one. The multi-layered DLC film shows higher emission current than conventional one.e.

  • This paper describes a new design of carbon nanotube tip. $Nanocly^{TM}$ NC 7000 Thin Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes of carbon purity (90%) and average diameter tube 9.5 nm with a high aspect-ratio (>150) were used. These tips were manufactured by employing a drawing technique using a glass puller. The glass microemitters with internal carbon nanotubes show a switch-on effect to a high current level (1 to $20{\mu}A$). A field electron microscope with a tip (cathode)-screen (anode) separation at ~10 mm was used to characterize the electron emitters. The system was evacuated down to a base pressure of ${\sim}10^{-9}$ mbar when baked at up to ${\sim}200^{\circ}C$ overnight. This allowed measurements of typical Field Electron Emission characteristics; namely the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and the emission images on a conductive phosphorus screen (the anode). Fowler-Nordheim plots of the current-voltage characteristics show current switch-on for each of these emitters.
