  • The pathogenesis of the nasal polyp is multifactorial and choanal polyps can be defined by its origin of genesis: antrochoanal (maxillochoanal), ethmochoanal and sphenochoanal polyp. Transforming growth $factor-{\beta}\;(TGF-{\beta})$ has various biologic activities, including the regulation of epithelial proliferation, the promotion of extracellular matrix formation and the induction of angiogenesis, hence closely related to pathogenesis of nasal polyp. Twenty cases of choanal polyps (13 antrochoanal, 4 ethmochoanal and 3 sphenochoanal polyps) were included in this study. Each polyp was subdivided into its origin, pedicle and choanal part. Hematoxylin and eosin stain for routine histopathology and immunohistochemistry were employed to detect expression of $TGF-{\beta}1.$ According to polyp type, edematous type is common at origin part and fibrous type at choanal part, and showed no difference at pedicle part in frequency. In ethmochoanal and sphenochoanal polyps, glandulocystic and edematous type is more common than fibrous type. $TGF-{\beta}1$ was expressed in epithelial cells, endothelial cells, eosinophils and lymphocytes. There was no different expression of $TGF-{\beta}1$ in each kind of choanal polyps and separate parts in each polyp. But histologic finding of choanal polyp is different between origin, pedicle and choanal part. Also infiltration of inflammatory cells including eosinophils has no difference between origin site. The expression of $TGF-{\beta}1$ was observed at all the choanal polyps and no difference between origin site and each portions was noted.

  • In order to determine the number concentration of asbestos, it is initially necessary to develop a method to identify the type of asbestos. Thus a SEM/EDX was used to obtain both physical and chemical information from known asbestos samples as reference samples. Based on these information, we could make a source profile matrix consisted of a glass fiber and 3 other types of asbestos such as chrysotile, crocidolite, and tremolite. After collinearity test was performed for these sources, we could successfully develop an expert system by C-language to separate and to identify various unknown types of fiber particles. The expert system was perfectly self-verified with original reference data. Then the program was extensively applied to survey indoor and outdoor environment such as a residential area, an elementary school, and underground store, and an auto junkyard. As a result for surveying, a total of 442 individual fibrous particles were well classified into 4 types of particle classes above mentioned; 5.4% of chrysotile, 4.1% of crocidolite, 3.6% of glass fiber, and 86.9% of unknown fibers in terms of number concentration. However, tremolite was not detected in the study sites. All the samples were satisfied with the recommendation level of 0.01 f/cc.

  • Purpose: The present study was aimed to examine the effect of acellular dermal matrix ($AlloDerm^{(R)}$) grafted to the experimental tissue defect on tissue regeneration. Materials and Methods: Male albino rabbits were used. Soft tissue defects were prepared in the external abdominal oblique muscle. The animals were then divided into 3 groups by the graft material used: no graft, autogenous dermis graft, and $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft. The healing sites were histologically examined at weeks 4 and 8 after the graft. In another series, critical sized defects with 8-mm diameter were prepared in the right and left iliac bones. The animals were then divided into 5 groups: no graft, grafted with autogenous iliac bone, $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft, $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft impregnated with rhBMP-2, and $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft with rhTGF-${\beta}1$. The healing sites of bone defect were investigated with radiologic densitometry and histological evaluation at weeks 4 and 8 after the graft. Results: In the soft tissue defect, normal healing was seen in the group of no graft. Inflammatory cells and foreign body reactions were observed in the group of autogenous dermis graft, and the migration of fibroblasts and the formation of vessels into the collagen fibers were observed in the group of $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft. In the bone defect, the site of bone defect was healed by fibrous tissues in the group of no graft. The marked radiopacity and good regeneration were seen in the group of autogenous bone graft. There remained the traces of $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ with no satisfactory results in the group of $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft. In the groups of the $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft with rhBMP-2 or rhTGF-${\beta}1$, there were numerous osteoblasts in the boundary of the adjacent bone which was closely approximated to the $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ with regeneration features. However, the fibrous capsule also remained as in the group of $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ graft, which separated the $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ and the adjacent bone. Conclusions: These results suggest that $AlloDerm^{(R)}$ can be useful to substitute the autogenous dermis in the soft tissue defect. However, it may not be useful as a bone graft material or a carrier, since the bone defect was not completely healed by the bony tissue, regardless of the presence of osteogenic factors like rhBMP-2 or rhTGF-${\beta}1$.

  • A matrix method for evaluating effective electro-magneto-thermo-elastic properties of a generally anisotropic multilayered composite is presented. Physical variables are categorized into two groups: one that satisfies the continuity across the interface between layers and another that satisfies an average inter-layer compatibility (which is also exact). The coupled electro-magneto-thermo-elastic constitutive equation is accordingly reassembled into submatrices, which leads to the derivation of concise and exact matrix expressions for effective properties of a multilayered composite having the coupled physical effects. Comparing the results for a purely elastic multiplayer with those from other theoretical approaches validates the developed method. Examples are given for a PZT-graphite/epoxy composite and a $BaTiO_3-CoFe_2O_4$ multiplayer which exhibit piezo-thermoelastic and magnetoelectric properties, respectively. The result shows how a strong magnetoelectric effect can be achieved by combining piezoelectric and piezomagnetic materials in a multilayered structure. The magnetoelectric coefficient of the $BaTiO_3-CoFe_2O_4$ multiplayer is compared with those for fibrous and particulate composites fabricated with the same constituents.

  • The air filter in engine intake system filters the dirt in the breathing air but also it attenuates the noise although the phenomenon has been regarded negligible. For the analysis of the acoustical performance of air filter, an acoustical model is suggested in this paper. The air filter consists of a porous filter element, which catches the particulate dirt, and a plastic filter box, which supports the filter element. Fibrous structure of the filter element is modeled as a micro-perforated panel using the flow resistivity and porosity. The pleated geometry of the filter element is modeled as two coupled ducts and a mathematical model is developed for the analysis of sound propagation. The filter box Is modeled as a rigid rectangular box. By combining two models, a 4-pole transfer matrix for the air filter is derived. The transmission loss calculated using the transfer matrix of the suggested model is compared with the measured data. Reasonably good agreement is observed. The result can be improved by considering the visco-thermal effect in modeling, in particular at a frequency range near the troughs of TL curve.

  • In this paper is presented the solution method for three-dimensional problem of transversely isotropic body's elastoplastic deformation by the finite element method (FEM). The process of problem solution consists of: determining the effective parameters of a transversely isotropic medium; construction of the finite element mesh of the body configuration, including the determination of the local minimum value of the tape width of non-zero coefficients of equation systems by using of front method; constructing of the stiffness matrix coefficients and load vector node components of the equation for an individual finite element's state according to the theory of small elastoplastic deformations for a transversely isotropic medium; the formation of a resolving symmetric-tape system of equations by summing of all state equations coefficients summing of all finite elements; solution of the system of symmetric-tape equations systems by means of the square root method; calculation of the body's elastoplastic stress-strain state by performing the iterative process of the initial stress method. For each problem solution stage, effective computational algorithms have been developed that reduce computational operations number by modifying existing solution methods and taking into account the matrix coefficients structure. As an example it is given, the problem solution of fibrous composite straining in the form of a rectangle with a system of circular holes.

  • In this study, a carbon nanotube (CNT) flexible strain sensor was fabricated with CNT based epoxy and rubber composites for tactile sensing. The flexible strain sensor can be fabricated as a long fibrous sensor and it also may be able to measure large deformation and contact information on a structure. The long and flexible sensor can be considered to be a continuous sensor like a dendrite of a neuron in the human body and we named the sensor as a biomimetic artificial neuron. For the application of the neuron in biomimetic engineering, an ANMS (Artificial Neuron Matrix System) was developed by means of the array of the neurons with a signal processing system. Moreover, a strain positioning algorithm was also developed to find localized tactile information of the ANMS with Labview for the application of an artificial e-skin.

  • The central strategy in tissue engineering involves a biomaterial scaffold as a delivery carrier of cells and a depot to deliver bioactive molecules. The ability of scaffolds to control cellular response to direct particular repair and regeneration processes is essential to obtain functional tissue engineering constructs. Therefore, many efforts have been made to understand local interactions of cells with their extracellular matrix (ECM) microenvironment and exploit these interactions for designing an ideal scaffold mimicking the chemical, physiological, and structural features of native ECM. ECM is composed of a number of biomacromolecules including proteins, glycosaminoglycans, and proteoglycans, which are assembled together to form complex 3-dimensional network. Electrospinning is a process to generate highly porous 3-dimensional fibrous structure with nano to micro scaled-diameter, which can closely mimic the structure of ECM. In this presentation, our approaches to develop biomimetic electrospun fibers for modulation of cell function will be discussed.

  • Cartilage has a limited regenerative capacity. Faced with the clinical challenge of reconstruction of cartilage defects, the field of cartilage engineering has evolved. This article reviews current concepts and strategies in cartilage engineering with an emphasis on the application of nanotechnology in the production of biomimetic cartilage regenerative scaffolds. The structural architecture and composition of the cartilage extracellular matrix and the evolution of tissue engineering concepts and scaffold technology over the last two decades are outlined. Current advances in biomimetic techniques to produce nanoscaled fibrous scaffolds, together with innovative methods to improve scaffold biofunctionality with bioactive cues are highlighted. To date, the majority of research into cartilage regeneration has been focused on articular cartilage due to the high prevalence of large joint osteoarthritis in an increasingly aging population. Nevertheless, the principles and advances are applicable to cartilage engineering for plastic and reconstructive surgery.

  • The spermatogenetic process in the edible giant snail is similar to those in the other snails, except for the axoneme formation process. In this study, the axoneme formation process in the giant snail was mainly examined by means of electron microscopy. The tail portion of a spermatozoon is about $160{\mu}m$ long, and extends straight to the rear, surrounded by two large and long mitochondria in spiral forms. A number of glycogen particles $(40\sim70nm)$ are found in the swollen matrix of the mitochodria. The axoneme which composes the tail of a spermatozoon is surrounded by $7\sim10$ lamella-form fibrous sheaths of about $0.2{\mu}m$ in thickness. Most of the mature spermatozoa are found to be clustered into a group of $5\sim7$ ea in syncytial bridges formed by cytoplasmic processes. Sertoli cells contain glycogen particles, endoplasmic reticulum, a lot of mitochondria, and lipids in their cytoplasm. They protrude their filiform pseudopodia and phagocytize abnormal spermatids or spermaozoa.
